Cayman S vs. 997 Carrera Comparison (AMS)

German car magazine AMS recently reviewed the Cayman S vs. the 997 Carrera. It is worth mentioning, that the reviewed Cayman S had PCCB and PASM while the 997 Carrera had the standard brake (PCCB isn't available for the 911 Carrera) but the 20 mm chassis incl. the limited slip differential.
The weight difference between both cars was 50 kg only, the 997 Carrera of course being heavier. Nethertheless surprising.

Test results:

0-100 kph
Cayman S: 5.4 seconds
997 Carrera: 4.9 seconds

0-200 kph
Cayman S: 19.0 seconds
997 Carrera: 17.7 seconds

Handling Performance
ISO-Handling Test
Cayman S: 145.6 kph
997 Carrera: 144.0 kph

Slalom Test (18 m)
Cayman S: 69.0 kph
997 Carrera: 69.2 kph

Braking Performance
100-0 kph: 36 m (both cars, cold and warm brakes)
2 m shorter braking distance from 190-0 kph for the Cayman S, apparently the advantage of the PCCB brake.

Both cars have been tested without the sport chrono package.
According to AMS, the Cayman S is a bit more trickier to drive when the PSM is turned off due to the mid engine setup. The 997 Carrera understeers a little bit more but has less traction problems than the Cayman S.
The Carrera is also more forgiving at the limit, offering a wider "safety range" than the Cayman S, of course we're talking about driving with PSM off.

AMS also seems to like the steering feel on the Cayman S better than on the 997 Carrera, the 997 Carrera feels a little bit less direct, probably due to the 19'' wheels.

I tried to extract the most important information without making any comments. Since we will post our own review soon, I didn't want to give away too much. Overall we have to agree with what AMS said.

Since it was a comparison review, the Cayman S won.
For the price of the Cayman S, you get almost 997 Carrera performance, AMS calls the Cayman S a "Cannibal".

More things to discuss as soon as we put our review online this weekend. Happy argueing.

Re: Cayman S vs. 997 Carrera Comparison (AMS)

Thanks RC!
What I am really interested to know is if there is any track times? I thought AMS usually test them on track. I also wonder how much faster the Cayman is because of the PCCB.

Re: Cayman S vs. 997 Carrera Comparison (AMS)

It is such a shame that the LSD and sports suspension cannot be ordered with the Cayman...

Did everyone catch the Cayman spinning the single wheel in the recent topgear episode?

Re: Cayman S vs. 997 Carrera Comparison (AMS)

Lack LSD is a major shortcoming, and hopefully will be corrected in the future. Is there a video of the topgear episode with spinning wheel I can link to anywhere? Thx.

There is no track time, yet. Sport Auto is supposed to review the Cayman S next year on the Nordschleife and in Hockenheim, I've been told by one of our sources that the Cayman S is around 5 seconds faster than the Boxster S on the Nordschleife and around half a second on the Kleiner Ring in Hockenheim. But this isn't officially confirmed data, just data probably achieved during Porsche's own track testing. So don't nail me on that.

Re: Cayman S vs. 997 Carrera Comparison (AMS)

Cayman a lot faster at the top end than the Boxster S. The figures prove its more than just a Boxster with a roof

Manufacturer Porsche Testing Date 3/2003
0 - 200 Km/h 23,8 s

The 0-60 the slowest time I've seen too, so the margin could be even larger

Re: Cayman S vs. 997 Carrera Comparison (AMS)

<while the 997 Carrera had the standard brake (PCCB isn't available for the 911 Carrera)>

PCCB is available on the 997 Carrera in Germany for 7,830 euros extra. I don't know anywhere where it is not an option. Autocar tested a 997 with PCCB so they definitely exist.

That's the 986S, with 258hp. The current Boxster has 280hp. So this comparison isn't particularly valid now.

I disagree. The mere fact that it IS a Boxster with a roof is why the Cayman is quicker top end. The reason : Better aerodynamics - combined with the fact that the Cayman has marginally more power.

Re: Cayman S vs. 997 Carrera Comparison (AMS)

Hmm, I still kinda prefer the 997.

However good the Cayman is, and I am sure it IS good, it will always be seen as a poorer man's 911. And it is. And I speak as a Boxster owner, not a 911 owner.

I disagree with u, Tim.
Some people who can easily afford the 911 will pick the Cayman because of preference or simply because coughing up the extra dough for the 911 when all u get is (at best) a marginally faster car with a different design.

The 911 survives because of the exact perception you advocate: "It is the better Porsche - no matter what you say".
And true, it is an iconic sportscar, but if you choose to be really rational and objective, there aren't that many rational reasons left to buy a 911 over a Cayman. Other than a slight performance advantage, design preference or simply because you want - buildning on what you said - "the rich man's Cayman, the original Porsche and benchmarking sportscar".

And what a nice argument that is, too. Because let's face it: once you go Porsche, Ferrari or any other premium car brand you have gone bonkers.
It's all not very rational anymore. So irrational rational arguments work just fine, and in this car segment branding is close to everything.
But taking a rational look at the Cayman and calling it "the poor man's 911" is both unfair to the car and the buyers IMO.

In other words: you are wrong and I am right! OK?

I kid you not
IMO there aren't very many things that justify the extra pricetag on the 997/997s.
But like I said, I understand why people would want one. I'm just not one who find the 997/997s that more attractive than the Cayman...probably mainly because I am a mid-engine disciple...
The 997TT and upward is a different story.

Young apprentice. In due time you will realize that you have been seduced by the Dark Side of the Porsche.
The dark Lord Nyne-One-Wan is strong, but the Porsche is even stronger in young Lord Caii-Man.
Your mind is clouded with anger and rage....soon a slave of the Dark Lord of the Troll, NikkBerri you will become if careful not you are.

Re: Cayman S vs. 997 Carrera Comparison (AMS)

Well I went to the launch bash last night and very well done it was, too. Rich C and wtsnet turned up, so it was almost a Rennteam night. The champagne flowed. The Cayman is a beautiful looking car, no doubt about it, the lines of the coupe work very well. But sobered up, and armed with a price list, the Cayman I would want, not particularly highly specced (less so than my current Boxster which has 19" wheels, PASM, autoclimate and metallic paint none of which I'd have on a Cayman to keep the price down) comes to Pounds51,000. For Pounds58,380 I could have a new 997 which comes with full leather and PCM (without navigation) which does make the Cayman look not particularly good value in comparison.

I've booked a test drive next Saturday, I'll take the Boxster for comparison purposes and post my impressions thereafter.
