    Porsche color from the Eighties?

    I've got a 1986 Road & Track Guide to Porsche (no scanner, though) that has in it a European spec 911 turbo in a color I've never seen in the U.S. Given this is a review (and taken from one of their features), I doubt it's a custom color.

    It's metallic, and depending on lighting, it looks orange, and once in awhile like fresh copper, like a brand new penny.

    Does anyone know what this color is called? It's stunningly beautiful.

    Looks too orange to be called red, I think. It's closer to the orange Lambo uses, only with more color saturation, a hint of copper, and larger metal flakes. Dang I need a scanner.

    I just did an image search for orange 911 so i don't have any color specifics. If you don't have a scanner try doing an image search an posting the resulting pictures.

    I will haul the issue over to a friend's and scan it tomorrow. The 911 above looks like signal orange from the Seventies, and the orange I'm talking about is metallic. Thanks Bryan.

    Jim, the color you describe sounds like kiln red, but I can not remember what year it discontinued somewhere between 84 to 86. They introduced another color similar then. I am racking my brain to remember its name. I will keep trying to remember. I hate getting old!

    I remember a color which was briefly offered in the late 80s which, if I am not mistaken, was called something like salmon pink metallic. It looked a lot like untarnisshed copper, so it may be the one you had in mind.

    Is it maybe this colour? Not sure what the name is but it looks like either metallica brown or copper.

    Jim, I googled "kiln red porsche color" and several sites came up with the colors. Kiln Red was a similar color to Zanzibar Red. Take a look, maybe this will help.

    Dan, I think that's it, you win. Coral red, huh? I'd never have guessed that as the name.

    Fantastic colour!

    I really like some of Porsche's 80's colours. They did some amazing green/greys, anthricite grey would look great on new 997s and they did a great grey gren that is close to, but a little darker than the one Aston Martin uses that is still one of my favorite all time colours on a car. very understated, but really interesting.

    It's not a very Midwestern (i.e. conservative) color, and it would attract a huge amount of mostly unwanted attention, from the revenuers and others. So I doubt I'd order that color, but have always been impressed by it. In Florida or California people wouldn't give it much of a thought, but out here it would stand out. I've had two red cars, and everything you do is too obvious to the revenuers. A Porsche nose in any color is enough to get hit with radar, even if you're well under the speed limit. Coral Red would beg, "Please laser me, officer."

    I'm in the Quad Cities, on the eastern edge, which is about 175 miles southwest of Chicago.

    Jim, just back from holiday and after looking at color I do believe it is KILN Red. The color is from 84 model year. It may have been around a couple of years before and after.
