    CD MP3 CHANGER

    CAN I ADD A AFTERMARKET CD CHANGER THAT PLAYS MP3 INSTEAD OF PORSCHE'S 6 DISKS CD CHANGER?

    Not one that will work with the MOST bus -- you can choose any aftermarket CD changer in the market, but it will have to be FM modulated...

    No, Porsche Engineers are not so clever...they've done a brand new car, with an obsolete cd-radio system.
    Only with the "ugraded" PCM you can read the MP3 libraries.

    It's sad, but thrue.

    What car do you have? When did you get it? All 997 since around April/May 2005 production can play MP3/WMA files through the PCM internal CD Player (CD changer doesn't play MP3 files).

    Another possibility would be a FM modulator (patching through your PCM antenna connection). You could also use a FM transmitter, there are several available but not always legal (depending on the country you're living in).

    I'm afraid Porsche woke up too late regarding the MP3 hype. I still don't understand why they don't offer an optional HDD MP3 player (the VW version is pretty nice, you can take it out and take it home to put your MP3 stuff o it) instead of the CD changer. Maybe in the near future?...

    In conclusion only 997 after May 05 can play mp3.
    for the rest lets hope that someday Porsche will invent a gadget (HDD it would be perfect) in order to listen Mp3.......

    Crap. FM modulation sucks. It takes your CD quality sound and passes it through the FM radio (bypassing the MOST bus cause it's near impossible to alter) using an FM signal. So for all that money for a new CD player would theoretically be going to waste. Why pay for excellent CD quality sound if it's going to be heard at FM quality only?

    I agree that an MP3 player would be really nice, but I'll even make it easier--if the PCM head unit just had an aux in jack, integrating an IPOD or any other portable MP3 would be a piece of cake. But do we have that?

    Anyone know how you make the "random" play function PERMANENT? I can now set the CD player to randon but every time I turn the car off it reverts to sequential play!
    I'd really appreciate the solution, if there is one, my salesman couldn't get it to "stick" either.

    Porsche Tequipment offers an PCM update! Unfortunately it costs more than Euro 400 in Germany!

    Yes, PCM update adds MP3 playback capability plus other features just as navigation's acceptance of zipp codes etc.

    How does the upgrade work? If I order it do I have to take it back to the dealer or can I do it myself?

    Nav update from my Tequipment 911 book

    "System and map update for navigation systems using data-format from Model Year 2005. Provides higher level of detail for the US, destination input with zipcode/postcode search, and integration with the optional electronic logbook. To find out which data version your PCM is using, please consult your local Porsche dealer. Part no. 000 044 900 89"
