I have studded tyres on my Audi S4. If you are serious about getting through they make a big difference. These are Nokian Hakkapeliitta 2. Whether you can use studded tyres and whether they are available for your vehicle will depend on where you are and what vehicle you drive. They aren't available for many of the performance cars. And I think you will have trouble finding any for the Cayenne.

Here is the most recent comparison test by Norway Motor on winter tyres. It is written in Norwegian and many of the tyres are only available in certain markets but the numbers are comprehensible and it will give you some ideas of what is possible:

    October 2005 Motor Norway

The problem for the Cayenne is the weight and performance of the vehicle. The best winter tyres are studded, sipped, with a very soft rubber and softer sidewalls. The Cayenne is just too heavy and too powerful for these tyres. Instead you will need to use tyres which are more capable of handling the power, speed and weight of the Cayenne. This will mean a compromise away from absolute best performance in the snow.

If you do find studded tyres which will fit the Cayenne rims, pay close attention to the speed and weight ratings for those tyres. You also should keep a close eye on them. I bet they don't last long if the vehicle is driven hard.

Fixedwing: Thank you for the reply!
In another forum, I happen to get a reply from Cay owner who lives in same town as myself. He have "Nokian Hakkapeliitta SUV studded tire" on his Cay! These must be pretty good tires, I have no idea how much it's cost but for 17"winter rims, can't be too bad(still hopefull). I am calling the same tire place he went in town , ASAP tomorrow morning since we had snow flakes coming down. Thanks for pix too!!

The Nokian Hakka SUV is the same idea but on a tyre designed to handle more weight. No first hand experience with the SUV version but I suspect you will find it not quite as good as the sedan version but better in bad weather than the more high-speed winter tyres usually mounted on the Cayenne. Of course, it also isn't going to have the speed rating and if you drive them really hard I think they will not be able to handle the heat as well.

If you were in Europe I'd probably suggest you not go for the Hakka SUV. But in North America, with its slower speeds and worse roads in the snow this is probably a very good choice.

In North America, when it comes to serious winter tyres, Nokian Hakkas are pretty much the only choice. Oh, and I do believe the SUV version is available studded.

If you do get them then take some photos of the car with them mounted. I believe you will probably have one of the best vehicles for going through serious winter conditions. I'd love to see pictures.

    Re: Studded tires?

I have tried both the Pirelli scorpion ice&snow (not studded) and studded nokian hakka suv (which are not approved by porsche). The studded nokian have superior grip on ice and snow and the Porsche approved pirelli's are better on wet and dry tarmac. If you drive a lot on snow, the nokian tire is a better choise. The downside is that they are only N-rated (190 km/h or 120 mph), but you shouldn't go faster than that on snow anyway..

    Re: Studded tires?

I went to the shop today, one confusing thing happened. On Nokian tires website, for my 17"wheel they suggest" 235/65R17XL" on Hakkapeliitta SUV studded tires. But this shop was out of stock in this size . ANd not just because it is out of stock(since they can order it), they think I should go with "275/60R17" or "255/55R17". Since I have no idea what these numbers means, I'm not quite sure what to do. And in between these two suggestion, they think "275/60R17" it the best since tires will be wider ,according to them. Can anyone make suggestion for me?

    Re: Studded tires?

235, 255 etc is the width in mm. I woulden't go wider than 255 on a winter tire. 235 is the best choise but may look a little "skinny".

    Re: Studded tires?

Thanks for the reply. I called them and had them order it in"235/65R/17". It's kind funny how they tried to suggest two other size for my Cay saying wider the safer &these hold more weight of your type of car etc....
and in between "275/60R17" or "255/55R17". they try to recommend "275/60R17" over "255/55R17". Order takes over a week for the arrival, hope we continue to have OK weather.

    Re: Studded tires?

I agree with 426's advice. Just watch the load ratings on the narrower tyre. Make sure it meets the requirements for the weight of the vehicle.

Basically, this is more about compromises. Wider tyres are better in dry conditions. Narrow tyres are better in snow & ice. So the Hakka's I got for my Audi were 205's where the stock wheels use 225's. I intentionally got narrower rims for that reason.

So for you, the decision is about your own priorities. And since we are talking about tyres which are designed to be the best in the snow and are studded for ice, your priority is obviously towards snow & ice performance over dry performance. So narrower makes sense.

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of them after you have them mounted and run-in a little. My guess is that in the dry you'll find the handling vague but once you experience snow & ice you'll be convinced.

    Re: Studded tires?

Fixedwing,"meets the requirements for the weight of the vehicle."??? I went to nokian site but it didn't tell me how to find out about that. Where can I check to find out? and how heavy is Cay V6??

XL in the name of the tire reccomended by Nokian stands for eXtra Load. If you get the XL rated tire, you will be fine.

Here is a table for the Nokian Hakka SUV:

    Nokian Hakkapeliitta SUV

The last three digits indicate the load rating. Obviously XL means extra load.

Here is a table of load ratings:

    Load Index

As to the weight of the Cayenne ... heavy!

    Re: Studded tires?

426h & fixedwing: thanks!! it looks like the tire I finally orderd " 235/65R17XL" seem to work ! It will take over a week for the order to come in but it's worth the wait and put the right one on for the use this winter. I sure appreciate all the help i get in this forum. I do ask some questions to my dealer too but I sure like to be able to double check it here to make sure, or ask here first so I have some idea of what to expect.!

    Re: Studded tires?

    Post pictures!

The dealer does understand that you want studded, right? Make sure he is getting the tyres from the distributor already studded and not adding studs. These tyres use special studs which are better than the norm:

    Eco studs

The standard studs can be added afterwards but thy are not quite the same.

Oh, you asked about the weight of the vehicle before, there should be a data plate somewhere on the vehicle indicating the maximum vehicle weight and the maximum axle weight. But I'm sure the tyre you selected at a 1000 kg. rating is going to be just fine. Make sur you keep the tyres properly inflated.

    Re: Studded tires?

fixedwing: Thanks for telling me about studs. I did tell them I wanted studded so, I hope that's what they orderd. Woke up this morning, snow on the ground! Luckly, road is all melted but I'm worried. Since my Cay came with 18" Pirelli's PZero Rosso which is not good at all on snow or ice.I just cross my fingers for this week to pass fast without snow while I anxciously wait for arrival of my new tires . I'll try to post pix when i get the tires!

    Re: Studded tires?

You are right, the Rosso is not a good tyre for cold and snow. It isn't quite as bad as some of the others but still nothing that you want to be driving on snow with. Hopefully you'll be ok though. It is still only mid-November..
