Really varies by dealer, not brand....
But have observed that BMW (at least in SF region) doesn't manage any tire replacement issues at dealer....
...BMW clearly doesn't think tires (and brakes for that matter 
) are part of high-performance car servicing.... 
And Merc dealers in SF and NYC seem accustomed to more time and convenience-sensitive clientele, prob given the different socio-econs of the 55/65 buyer bases.....perhaps if BMW could sell some $100K+ cars it would understand that the time of a typical SL/CL55 buyer is more valuable than that of a typical M5/6 buyer....

Maybe you're from my area because I have the same issues in the Washington DC. Met. area. VOB BMW (where I have friends work) is so popular in my rich suburban town that they try to SCREW everyone with inordinate surcharges/fees. If you dont like it? They couldn't care less, there are 3 other suckers waiting in your place.
The MB dealer is much more cordial, creates a personal relationship...
Perhaps its a reflection of the marketing strategy (MBs for the aristocraticos, BMW for the high-flying pricks)

I agree that it varies dealer to dealer.
So far, my local MB dealers have been very good to excellent. The only negative comment so far is when they accidentally washed my black car even though I told them not to. Lots of swirl marks. I never let any dealership wash my black car, as it is kept nicely polished and dealerships tend to add lost of swirls in just one wash.
Recently bought a BMW and it has developed a very nasty noise after only 2 weeks. Haven't seen the car yet, but a family member tried to schedule a service appointment and the receptionist told her that she could not get one for 2 weeks unless she could say which salesperson sold the car. I called back and talked to a service advisor who got a loaner car ready and apologizd.
So far it's going okay, but I'm guessing the receptionist doesn't know what is going on.

My Mom had the opposite experience at Mercedes of Seattle and BMW of Seattle. The MB dealership people were a-holes, so she walked up the street to BMW who were warm and welcoming, and drove away in a new BMW.

Just opposite from what I've experienced in the past 5 yrs..... MB dealers in Vancouver are cold, numb, careless and greedy...

Here in the UK, my local BMW dealer was arrogant, incompetent and totally uncaring. It has put me off totally having another BMW, which is a great shame because the car I had for five years, a 328i Touring, was excellent. I've not had a Mercedes but I've heard bad things about their after sales service also. My own experience is that if you want guaranteed quality of service, go Japanese.
