almost a week with my baby ...

Thought I write a comparison between the 997S and my daily driver, E46 M3.

The 997S is unbelievable, makes the M3 handle like a family sedan/coupe. I remember about a year ago, while stopped at a light, saw this 993 zoom up from the opposite end catching to make an yellow. He must've been doing 50-60 easily. As he approached, I didn't see him slow down ... I thought to myself, oh crap. Amazingly, he cuts into the corner and took it as if it was NOTHING! My eyes went !!!

Now that I know. OH MY GOD this thing handles SOOOOOO GOOD, how does Porsche do the magic they do?!

    Engine:
The 3.8 in the 997S sounds sooooo good. W/ PSE it growls at you! The M3 has an aftermarket titanium exhaust on it, but at certain rpms the "rasp" is still there. Never really liked it, an engine should sound like an engine, not a weed wacker.

The M3 is a SMG and 997S is a 6MT ... all I have to say about that is, both have their advantages: the 6MT is more fun, SMG is more convenient.

The M3 is an awesome daily driver, plenty of room in the back, coworkers can all squeeze in and goto lunch. The 997S is a weekend car, call up my girl and go for a ride type of car.

Both amazing machines. I can't ask for more.

    Amen!

Re: almost a week with my baby ...

I did like you Kevin, M3 convertible to 997S coupe. Did not keep the M3.Compared to the Porsche, it was like navigating a barge canal on a river. It was a great car, but I didn't know any better. Can't say I'll ever go back to BMW.

Why do I get the feeling you've already explored the upper ranges of your tachometer?

I was immediately impressed by the overall responsiveness of the car. Throttle response, brake feel, and especially it's ability to corner and change of direction

The first time I made a brisk lane change on the freeway; it felt like all I did was 'think' where I wanted to place the car and I was already there. 'Telepathic' is I guess how I describe the driving experience with this car.

Thanks for sharing your comparisons, at one time I was very serious about purchasing a M3. Makes me that much more glad I bit the bullet and spent the extra $$$

Re: almost a week with my baby ...

so far I've had it up to around 4500 rpms but, always when the engine's fully warmed up.

from owning the M3 I learned this, if you baby these highly tuned engines, they will die on you. I just drive it normally, never race it, and it'd be just fine.

Ditto. Although I haven't ventured past 4200rpm yet, I'm very firm with the throttle once the clutch is fully disengaged

I can't wait to get her to full tilt 'boogie! I wish I had the PSE; the sound clips I've heard sound awesome! I'm sure you're in for a treat

i can't stop blipping the throttle w/ the pse turned on. The sound is heaven.

Re: almost a week with my baby ...

The E46 M3 is a wonderful car. I've owned one for 3 years and it does most things very well. It's just NOT a Porsche. Anyone who has driven both knows that there is a difference.

Re: almost a week with my baby ...

Got both 04M3 with SMG and 06997S 6spd. Great pair of cars to have. Yes the practical issues like doing airport runs M3 is good. But also the 997S is always a sports car, engine sounds, a bit crowded, lots of information coming from the road, not a breeze to get in and out of. I'd rate both cars equally, why? I think the SMG makes the M3 a real trip to drive since I still can't manually shift and rev match exactly in a billionth of a second, like the SMG. Handling and performance is different but both are "perfect" as far as I'm concerned (both could use 100 more hp though).
