No, buying that 918 is an awesome investment, as it puts you in the VIP club for many years of lucrative options on limited models.  Even if he didn't like the 918 that well (which he obviously does), it was a very smart buy! Smiley

Grant,  I never said that the 918 was a bad purchase. What I was trying to say is Porsche has made a lot of money from all of Nick's purchases. Replacing the underside would hardily cost Porsche anything compared to what they made off Nick.

The only downside is if other 918 owners get wind of this they will demand the same should there be damage to their underside. FWIW, years ago I had an incident with Ferrari where they paid for a $14,000 repair but asked I keep quiet about it. I had had some valid legal and goodwill issues to threaten them with just as Nick has here.

Aluminum can also be pounded back into shape if needed (to a point).  The new 911 RSR btw has a metal rear diffuser, not carbon.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

918 profits are smaller than one might think if at all - the car is a technology showcase where development costs usually are not being recovered by the model but maybe down the line in a 992.....

    https://tmstitanium.com/products/titanium-sheet-plate/

Buy a nice thin Ti sheet and have it cut to size and then lay it on top of the existing CFRP. It doesn't have to cover all the hard angles, just throw it over the large surfaces. WAY stronger than aluminium and lighter as well.

20k on a million euro car is like 3k on a turbo s and 1k on a boxster. I dont find

the asking price inappropriate. You just have to know what you're getting into when you buy a car like the 918. That's all

Why should Porsche pay anything to a driver who didn't see a rock on the road or had no chance  to avoid it?

    Interesting thinking...

Rocks, debris and impediments are a known hazard on public roads. To outfit a million dollar car with an undercarriage unable to withstand these hazards makes the car unsuitable for the purpose it was intended. No doubt I could argue otherwise but my point is Porsche should take care of Nick given he is one of their best clients.👌

I really don't see the issue nor that Porsche should compensate. It is not like one of the doors spontaneously fell off, he hit a stone and it damaged the car. That is not a manufacturer issue, that is an insurance issue.

Next time I get a stone chip in the windscreen I will blame Porsche

Nick, the underbody is quite sturdy. I have abused it properly over the last 2 years, scraps, little rocks, pebbles and everything else.

This was a fist sized rock that I ran over as I didn't quite see it till the last moment. It would have passed under the car but one of the turning vanes caught it and caused it to tumble and rotate and hence nailed the tray.

Maybe Porsche might replace it for free if I had asked for it, but I am not going to waste my goodwill with them over a 20k tray. I got bigger fish to catchSmiley

I think Porsche is quite sensible in putting the right stuff on the right places - as with their frontlips in Plastic vs Carbon - my friend has broken his front-lip on the DBS and it costs a bomb to replace - Porsche has on all their GT cars plastic and it's easy to replace - so for 918 you have different priorities - surely no plastic there....

    You'd be surprised!

Each front corner, there is a little ABS plastic 'piece' underneath the bumper/front lip. They extend perhaps 20mm down. I am sure they have some aero benefits but they take the brunt of scratching if I enter a slope at not enough of an angle Smiley

    Oh boy...hilarious. kiss

Also loved his t-shirt and how he (still) spelled the name Porsche. Reminds me of that guy at a hotel in the US in his Porsh Panamera. We had an argument about how to say Porsche correctly and even my "you know that I am German, right?" argument didn't convince him because all his super sports cars friends say Porsh, so it must be right.  mail

I do not say NEV YORK.  I get your point but when it comes to car brands, I think that there is a certain pronounciation rule, even if it may be unwritten. Germans say Renault and Citroen correctly, so why would French not do the same with Porsche?

I even pronounce Dacia correctly... Smiley Smiley

Nice-looking wheels, and great to see someone using their car over the winter, too. I'm curious - what was the dealer's attitude and position regarding the fitment of non-original parts?
