    Sunroof Q.

Is there anyone here who actually prefers to do without a moonroof? If so, why?

Two words: weight and noise (especially on a sports car at high speeds).

    Re: Sunroof Q.

RC, how much weight is a sunroof?
Is it really that noisy when it's closed?
I think I would like it, especially the ones that are that are transparent (ie not Porsche). My dealer told me Porsche doesn't do transparent sunroof for rigisity reason. Do you really lose that much in rigidity?
    Fanch.

    Re: Sunroof Q.

Personally, I'd never buy a car without a sunroof because the weight increase is ridiculous and the noise from it isn't bad at all. Yes, rigidity might be an issue on certain cars but not on the major players (car brands) because the sunroof is part of the car concept.
In summer time, it is nice to be able to open the side windows and the sun roof. A Cab might be the better alternative but with a Cab, you really increase weight and decrease rigidity.

I find that I'm often too tall (6'4" - 1,93m) to fit in the driver's seat comfortably with a sunroof. I normally buy Porsche coupes with the "sunroof delete" option because of limited headroom. Deleting the sunroof gains 31mm of headroom in a 993!

    Re: Sunroof Q.

Mike - I totally agree with the headroom issue (and I'm only 5'11" with a long torso and short legs). Also 911 sunroofs are too small to be useful and aren't as safe at the track (and are more prone to rattles, leaks, and added weight at the worst place on the car).

I don't find them small at all, they actually provide a lot of fresh air and especially sun. And why shouldn't they be safe at the track, even during a rollover it shouldn't be a problem.
I'd worry much more about a rollover with my car (E55 with Panoramic Roof) because even in the owner manual it say that "it can break during certain circumstances".

    Re: Sunroof Q.

Considerable added weight to the highest point of a car cannot be a good thing for handling. This added with the headroom issue, and common rattles makes this option of no interest to me, but suprisingly sunroofs seem to be very popular. I would think buying a Targa would be the best choice for people who like sunroofs on their 996, but these cars seem to be poor sellers compared to the coupes.

How much weight does a sunroof add? 15-20 kg? At max?
It needs a REAL pro driver (like Walter Röhrl or Michael Schumacher) to really be able to take advantage of 15-20 kg less weight. Things would be different if it is less unsprung weight (for example lighter rims and lighter brakes), the difference would be much easier to feel. Even a onemass flywheel can do wonders but a sunroof? I don't know. Yes, rigidity is an issue, especially on a race car but to be serious, I wouldn't buy a real race car with a sunroof. I'm not sure they even make them with sunroofs.
