Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

How many of the 997/997S owners are satisfied with their cars?

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

I bought my 997 used and have had it about 6 weeks. I love the car more and more every day. Even driving in rush hour in Los Angeles it makes me smile.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

I'm like, ummm, 95% satisfied. And that's pretty damn incredible to me, as 100% satisfaction would require a car that accelerated so hard that I almost black-out from bloodflow deprivation to the frontal lobes of my brain.

I think to say you're "100% satisfied" is to be drunk with enthusiasm. There's always greener grass out there, there are so many fantastic cars to choose from, especially when you're talking about that much green $$...

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

    95% rounded off = 100%!

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

Except for my RMS issue and the upcoming clutch issue, I'm 100% satisfied.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

    100%, Can not get enough!http://www.rennteam.com/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

After nine months and 5,600 miles I am still having fun with my black/black 911 coupe. It's quick, nimble, gorgeous and relatively rattle-free. The shifter, seating position, handling, visibility, Bose, engine sound are all excellent. I could go for more torque and wish I held out for the auto-dimming sideview mirror. Great car.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

Poll is too restricted. Unless you want no middle ground. It goes from totally satisfied to "probably get another car next time."

Also, think about it: now that BMW looks like processed cheese there really is no other car (to get excited about) for next time.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

For those who choose option 2, could they say what car would they choose over the 997/997S?

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

The car is one year old today and I am extremely happy with it.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

One of the comments above is that the 997 is "relatively rattle free", and there are plenty of threads here and elsewhere regarding rattles, squeaks, creaks etc.

Isn't it infuriating that a car as expensive and as celebrated as a work of precision engineering and quality in materials and design has such frequent problems with rattles and other nuissance noises? You won't find this volume of rattles with a Toyota.

And we're relieved that our hundrend thousand dollar sports cars are "relatively" rattle free.

What kind of fools are we? How many posts about unwanted noises are there here and elsewhwere regarding cars that are brand new (less than 15,000 km - most < 5,000 km)? The dashboard, the bushings, the sunroof, the window supports, etc. etc.

Yet here I am, lining up to get a C2S, hoping it'll be free of these issues. Isn't that ridiculous?

And RMS - isn't that ridiculous too? A well known design fault that's left unchecked year after year, and now generation after generation. It just seems that I've followed the joy and enthusiasm of so many rennteam members as they've received their 997's, only to hear that they got RMS, or they needed a new clutch, or they're beign driven crazy by noises, or they have electrical gremlins. But i want to love this car so much.

Sheesh - I'm feeling pretty frustrated and stupid right now. Do I just swallow Porsche propaganda mouthful after mouthful?

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

But it's not TVR - of course you will be happy with the car!

Seriously, it is very hard for even a German specialist car manufacturer such as Porsche make their build quality consistent due to the relatively low volumes of cars they produce. Also with the harder suspension you are likely to get more rattles to be honest.

Finally, I suspect you are getting an unblanced view of the quality of car as people on this forum will tend to report issues rather than the lack of them. A lot of the members are P-Car addictz big-time and will tend to report any event, however minor. I have bored my OPC stiff test driving this car (once very hard indeed at a PDE) and I have never heard any creaks/rattles, had clutch issues or had any other sort of malfunction.

In fact the whole thing has always felt more tightly screwed together than my Beamer, which has pretty good bld quality IMHO. RMS has been an issue, but I understand Porsche have issued a new design of seal to finally fix this one - RC should know more (he seems to know everything?).

So suggest you don't get into a tizzy about this - just go with the flow and I'm sure you will fall in love with your new baby when it arrives!

    SoS.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

I'm very satisfied, I wish I had a little bit more power but the chassis is absolutely fabulous, the car is extremely fun to drive. Also quality improved over the years a lot, this is my FIFTH 911 (I started with the 993) and it got better and better.

Not really because the payoffs in other areas are great. You're also hearing the bad news. They've built around 4000 (? correct me if wrong) 997s so far and the boards represent like 500 (?) owners. Doing the arithmetic, that would mean fewer than ten of the cars have had major LEMON problems so far? I hear, the RMS problem is cheaper to fix on an as needed basis than to redesign the mfgr process or boxer engine; the costs to machine engine crankcases to make perfect seals on every engine (a big number wouldn't even need this extra step but presumably would get it anyway) would be prohibitive.

Toyota would be a good choice for sensible people on a budget.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

Silver Bullet, you made me chuckle this morning. I've owned three BMWs and two Mercedes since my '97 E320 which was rattle free, as was my '00 328i. I sold my '03 330ci convertible after 8 months because of horrible rattles, and my '03 SL500 lasted just 18 months because the complex top mechanism always rattled and could not be fixed. So when I wrote that I'm satisfied with my '05 911 because it's relatively rattle-free, it's in comparison to my personal experiences. My 911 hasn't visited the shop once for defects, and so far it's a keeper. Ditto for my '04 X5. The freeways and canyons are full of potholes, etc. here in L.A., and I guess I've developed a certain sensitivity to rattles and squeaks...

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

Quite honestly, having unbolted and bolted back together myriads of cars in my lifetime, I can't fathom how new car makers manage to make them as RATTLE-FREE as they do!!! Man, there's a guhzillion different stresses, stretches, vibrations, harmonics, etc.., that all the myriads of components are exposed to. As such, I find that my 997S is amazingly well-put-together, with no major rattles, and a couple minor ones I had at first that seem to have resolved themselves. And whatever noises are left over that I hear when I'm crossing railroad tracks, or going down a washed-out road, you're simply never going to get away from in a car that pulls these kinds of g's. There's a point where you've got to get realistic.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

I'm pretty happy with my C2S, however I think it is owner's responsibility to keep pushing for higher quality if you want P- to remain as a great sports car company. In this kind of small market, users and manufacture have to grow together. One cannot exist without the other. We can be satisfied with and spoil P- but that will not lead them to create a better machine. I don't want them to fall in behind others. They already figure out how to make lots of money. They got the highest profit margin among auto manufactures. What they need to do is to make all P- cars higher quality as we want. No more "little" problems that we try not to care about. So, it is good to voice what we expect from $100k car. Loving them is not only spoiling them. lol

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

It would take a whole lot to go wrong with my 997S for me to be satisfied less than 100%. But then I've been driving 911's for fifteen years, so I knew what to expect when I ordered my 997S. I'm not exactly 100% satisfied with the dealer sales team, however, but that's a different poll altogether.

And about rattle noises, I completely agree with Bossnine. I wonder if when the Space Shuttle launches that the astronauts are frowning on the rattles, or when a Top Fuel driver is blasting down the quarter mile, is he disappointed in the rattling noises? IMHO, probably not.

It's all good, and I'm loving my 997S!

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

Re: tori's post I completely agree but I don't think Silver Bullet has his/her P-Car yet. Whilst it is important to keep your supplier lean'n mean, complaining about a product you do not yet own (or maybe have not even ordered) seems a little... harsh?

SB does have other options after all: DB9 (beautiful on my test drive), F430 (fab but less subtle), Ariel Atom, Viper, 'vette, GT40, TVR, or even a handcrafted Chesil:

My friend you are the quintessential Porsche buyer. The heart does the thinking while Porsche's ingrained past glories relieves you of your hard earned money. Despite all appearances, Porsche is not what it was and never will be again.

The ONLY thing Porsche has going for it now is they are the leader in this price point sport car market. However, that is changing. Many car manufacturers are gaining while Porsche is losing share in this market segment. Just today I read an article about the Cayman and its visual similarity with the 911. The article concluded that a Cayman S equipped with a sport chrono, large tires and modified suspension would trounce the 911 S and be priced $20,000 less.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

Well, just to be contrary, my wife's low mileage Corolla does have some rattles (admittedly noticeable only on rougher roads).

But many also underestimate how much difference a stiffer suspension can make. My stock WRX was rattle free until I changed to firmer springs and struts. An immediate and noticeable difference.

My 4Runner bounces around a lot on and off the road, and it has no squeaks or rattles after 50,000 km. A 3 series BMW I drove had a sport suspension - nothing.

My 996 Targa gets some rattles from the roof, but they all go away after lubricating the mechanism. I do get a creaking noise when going over a speed bump slowly, or when I go over the curb to get up my driveway, ie. when the car flexes. This has been a common complaint here and at other P-forums.

I live in conflict: I LOVE driving my Targa, but I do check the garage for a spot of oil when I leave in the am (so far so good at 22,000 km). I love to power out of a turn and feel the back end squat down and dig into the road catapulting me out of the bend, but I'm embarrassed when I have a colleague in my car and we go up a parking ramp and it creaks like an old coffin. Who wants to put down as much money as we do, and not have an experience free of BS like that and RMS? It is bloody disappointing, and I don't think that it's being unreallistic, at least not with the claims of excellence that come from Porsche. Have you watched the 997 videos of the 2 Carreras on the track in Spain? Have you heard the narrators cheesy voice? Every third word is a superlative!

I know I am not alone in this conflicted state. I will get a 997S, and I'll probably LOVE it. But I'll still always be worried at some level about the sorts of issues that we've all grown accustomed to hearing about 'round here. There is, in my opinion, room for Porsche to continue (as RC tells us) to improve.

Now that's funny. My car was at the dealership to fix some minor problems. One of it was a high pitched noise coming from the speaker behind the driver. That was my assumption and that was what I told them. When I got the car back they told me that they had fixed five rattles! One of it coming from the rear plate.

Yes, I totally agree. I rattle more than my 997 does. But I will say that when I had a new 993 in 1996 - it was even quieter.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

My 993 was tight as a drum as well. The spartan nature of the interior, and the fact that they ran that basic interior for 30-odd YEARS (LOL) gave them plenty of time to work out the squeeks and rattles!!

I'm just saying that my 997S is quiet as a mouse. I have no issues. For those that do, well, better you than me!!

As for Porsche losing their way, and the Cayman "trouncing" a 997S, hogwash... That same paragraph of Porsche "not being what it was, and will never be again", could have been overheard at a Porsche club event in 2005, 1995, 1985, 1975, or 1965, as purists are constantly stuck on "the sky is falling".

I'm not being a blind Porsche puppet, I'm just saying that the 911 has never been healthier in the market, has never performed better, and the Cayman will add health to an already RICH and HEALTHY company, but it won't take hardly a nibble out of the 911. As it is, Porsche can't build enough 911's to saturate demand, so it'll be a GOOD thing for them to relocate some 911 customers into a different car. It won't slow 911 production down a tick, and the revenue and profits will continue to rise, and both the 911 and the Cayman are brilliant driving machines, regardless of whether a few customers have a rattle in their 1st-year production vehicle.

Re: Satisfied with the 997/997S so far?

My 997 cab is bank vault solid, top up or down, with excellent build quality and no squeaks or rattles. Feels very tight, substantial and well-screwed. Everything not only works, it belongs, in the typical Porsche understated way. I love it. Best car I've ever owned.

squeaks and rattles? Isn't that what the PSE is supposed to "fix"?
