    lobster fork nightmare

    woke up this morning at around 3am, thinking "omg! did I check the order list to make sure that the sports design wheels were on it? ARGH! I hope that I didn't get it w/ the lobster wheels!"

    ran to the kitchen, looked up the order sheet on the refrig, whew ... there it was. sports deign wheels.

    I'm not a fan of the lobsters either....but in a poll conducted a few months back, it was surprisingly close between the lobsters and the carrera classics as THE choice wheel....

    it's all about personal preferences. I personally do not like the lobster wheels at all.

    They look better in person than in pictures. IMO, it will always be a puzzle why Porsche choose to put them on the car.

    Like 'em both. The Lobsters look crenellated (like castles) to me. (Wierd? Moi?).

    i like the lobsters myself, makes the car look more like a 993 vs a 996 as you can see in the above pictures. they are a modified design of the original 993 wheels i believe.

    looking at the pics above, this is all I have to say:

    the 911S has a NICE arse, I'd be more than glad to kiss that ass open mouthed anytime, anyday, anywhere. GOD that's sexy.

    Nice comp 1Gunner.

    Try this: Look at the Carrera wheels and notice how your eye glides over the whole visual aspect of the car. It's an easy flow of visual elements and it all makes sense wholistically.

    Look at the example with "lobster forks" an notice how the experience is broken up, less continuous.

    Makes me think the stylists at Porsche are trying to break up the visual continuity of the S to set it apart from the non-S. (also notice there's non-S stock 18 wheels that look similar) Pretty weird "sabotage" to make the experience more jagged (aggressive?) to get noticed IMO.

    O.K., dumb question but I don't have my car yet so what wheel comes standard on an 06 997 Carrera Cab?

    Should be the 18" Carrera III wheels-similar to the Classics, but 18" instead of 19".

    I'm going through this decision myself right now and to me, there just seems to be something new, fresh, and modern about the lobsters vs the Classics (I don't like the Sport Design wheels and man, must they be a bitch to clean) that says 997, while the Classics, well, they're more classic. That look has been around for decades (I semm to remember the 5 spoke wheel as being a Ferrari wheel myself - probably from growing up with Magnum PI!). I wanted the 18' Carrera II wheels on my 996, but I find myself wanting the lobsters on my soon to be ordered 997S.

    Still, it's not an easy choice.

    My car now has them .... with clear bulbs even!

    Both wheel styles work on the car, however the PITA factor won me over.

    Thanks MMD. I like the standard wheels. You know guys, all this talk of Coupe vs. Cab. I'm getting a Cab and I'm happy with that but the coupes (like MMDs) are so beautiful (flowing graceful lines) that it's hard not to want ONE OF EACH!

    I love my clutch fork wheels (they look MUCH more like clutch-release forks than lobster forks, which I think is a hilarious testimony to the 997's customer demographic, exposing the average 997 owner's inability to recognize the internal workings of his car, instead choosing an analogy involving an implement used to eat Lobster at the country club!! )

    I find the classics to be a bit boring. Yes, they flow, they are unified. But, the 997 is already such a flowing and rounded design, that it could really USE something to counter the blob-iness and balance it out, such that it doesn't resemble too much a bare egg.

    I think the clutch forks give it an industrial art look, that better suits a vehicle so steeped in engineering and mechanical prowess.

    But hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it?
