    997 4S...

Hi guys, I wanted to get some of your opinions. I am seriously thinking of replacing my '05 997S Cab with an '06 4S..Not only am I smitten by that beautiful 144mm wider rear end, but the performance benefits (through cornering, inclement weather) are enticing. Any thoughts/regrets from you C4 owners? I talked with my sales guy, this would cost me about $20-25K USD, as the sales tax on what I paid would be gone, plus depreciation. On the other hand, I would have a one year newer car, and it would be a 4S Cab, optioned just the way I want. Thoughts please guys! Thanks- Gregg

if you trade it in you should get a credit for the amount of the trade in .

    Re: 997 4S...

Had 997C2S during last yr's rainy season in SF...found traction to be outstanding even in wet mtn curves....and I admire the light 3150lb wt of the C2SCoupe...why unnecessarily pork-up a car w/AWD that already has strong traction?

OTOH, have 996TTSCoupe now and have found traction of its AWD to be very confidence-inspiring and useful in car w/450 hp&lb-ft, esp in wet conditions...

IMO C4S Cab sounds like the ultimate poseur's P.....a bloated car w/a body that looks intimidatingly wide, but missing the monster motor.....and pricing of a moderately equipped C4SCab is prob only <$20K less than a 997TT, which will likely include many items like PCCB, full leather, and poss PDK

    I'd avoid today's $20K hit and get a 997TT/S @launch.....

BTW, may want to lease next time to minimize CA sales tx hits if you choose to trade-in frequently for the latest tech toy....

In NY yes, not in CA

    Re: 997 4S...

Why not? If you don't like the 4's handling characteristics you can always get a 2007 CS.

As a side note, I notice that the C2S and the C4S have the same 0-60 times in the back of the owner's manual. Whereas the C2 and C4 do not.

Do whatever makes you happiest. If I could choose between the C4S Cab & my C2S Cab I'd choose the C4S cab but I bought my C2S Cab 7-8 months before the C4S cab will be available planning to get a 997 Turbo cab. IMO the difference between the C2S cab & the Turbo Cab will be enough to make the switch. The differences between the S cab (fantastic car) & 4S cab isn't enough to justify a switch and the above mentioned loss with the Turbo cab perhaps 9 months away.

    Re: 997 4S...

Doesn't make sense to me at all, especially because you're giving away the Cab for a Coupe without gaining much. Unless you really want the 4WD because of lot of rain in your region or whatever. The rear is only 44 mm (not 144 mm) wider and trust me, it takes a lot of knowledge about the 997 and a good eye to see a difference.

But if you have too much money...

    Re: 997 4S...

    Greggr107,

Take the advice of RC and Stradale: Don't change from a normally aspirated 2SCab to a 4SCab. If you really want the widebody (44mm, not 144mm as RC stated), plus the benefits of AWD (traction for inclement weather), then get in line for the 997 Turbo Cab (S or not). Plus, RC and turbolite have both publicly hinted that the 997TT could have some interesting technological innovations-in other words, it won't be merely a 997 widebody with the 996TT KKK-K24/Bosch/Motronic engine/transaxle setup. Sounds to me like it's worth a deposit with your P sales guy.

    Re: 997 4S...

Agree! In your case, wait for the Turbo. Probably not worth it to trade for the 4S- unless you go for the X51 too!

    Re: 997 4S...

I'm getting a little tired of some people here saying if you don't get the standard shift or the coupe, you must be a poseur. Give me a break. I may have felt that way when I was younger but now I'm pretty sure I'd rather be a poseur than an A-HOLE! It's my car, I'll equip it exactly as I want it and mind your own business. Calling someone a poseur isn't very classy and says to me this guy would be better suited in a Vette!

    Re: 997 4S...

Add the X51 and you'll be very happy.
    ciao, silvio

    Re: 997 4S...

Drove the 997 C4S Cab at the UK launch party yesterday.
Had extended test drive with advanced driving instructor who worked for Porsche UK.

    Felt very under-powered - very un-impressed.

Walked away thinking what a great car my 987S is.

Would need GT3 or Turbo to provide any considerable degree of performance step-up.

Gutted (it was my dream car).

    Re: 997 4S...

If true, then Porsche is guilty of exaggerating the C4S's performance numbers.

    Re: 997 4S...

If you want a fixed head sports Porsche, buy a 911. If you want a soft top sports Porsche buy a Boxster.

    Re: 997 4S...

Hmmm.. I was thinking the 997TT was going to be a little out of my reach after equipping it the way I wanted.. now I'm starting to think I'm gonna have to juggle some assets around to find a way to afford it! Thanks for the views, they are appreciated. I drove a 996TT for the first time last week, wow.. can only imagine the 997. My beloved Harley Davidson sits in my garage right now, scared that she is the sacrificial lamb for my automotive lust

Never a truer word spoken. Who in their right mind would buy a cab 997 when you can get a Boxster S for a lot less and is a lot more fun !

Alot of the lads on here and good luck to them ,, its their preference choice and there money ..

    throt

    Re: 997 4S...

They only do so because of the Kudos of owning a pukka 911.

    Re: 997 4S...

Thanks very much to some posters here for telling the rest of us which transmission (standard) and which body style (coupe only) is acceptable and which is not. However, since we're not telling YOU what to do with YOUR money, some of us would appreciate you not telling US what to do with OURS!
We promise we won't make fun of you stuck in traffic shifting your right arms and left feet off and that sickly pale white skin tone from lack of sun and fresh air.
And we promise NOT to make fun of you because you couldn't afford the extra $10,000 for the Cabriolet!

Oh, and we're pretty sure our P-cars still say PORSCHE on them in all the same places yours do.
    Nuff said?
Throt, you are a man of great wisdom!

You are obviously not a man of great wisdom or you would realise that in Europe we don't all use our 'right arms' to shift nor our 'left feet'.

Interestingly the great majority of Europeans are unlikely to have 'pale white skin' but then I guess you have never heard of Italy or Spain etc?

Oh and finally that amazing $10,000 extra for a cab makes you look even more stupid as you clearly have no comprehension of how much a P car costs here? It does not take a genius to realise that the average owner here must have more disposable income than the average US owner because our cars cost far more in the first place.

Finally why did I make that comment about the 997 cab?

It would take you an infinite amount of time to comprehend why a Boxster might be more fun or even longer to work out why it might represent better value, so I will not bother to try and explain, as I don't have time.

I bought a 997SCab because I wanted one! The Boxter is lacking in style and heritage and I'd sell it if it was given to me. I will never own a Boxter.

All 997's are awesome... personal preference determines what's bought. So jjr1, what does the cab lack that the coupe has?

    Re: 997 4S...

Europe? What's that? Oh, I remember you now, you're the people who used to be important thousands of years ago and still like to think you are right?

    Re: 997 4S...

The cab has a certain amount of extra weight that is immediately felt through the right pedal. It does not have the initial response of the coupe and feels almost lethargic in comparison.

It also suffers from 'scuttle shake' but more importantly that lack of rigidity is felt under hard cornering where it feels floaty and aloof as if it has a mind of its own. It loses the sports car feel and takes on more of a GT persona which is cool if Porsche didn't already make a Sports convertible.

Unfortunately the Boxster treads on the 911 Cab comprehensively offering that same sense of 'wind in the hair freedom' but in a more compact better executed sports car.

Take both cars down a twisting country road with the roof off and apart from the smugness of the 911 driver having the more expensive car, the Boxster owner will never feel short changed. He/she will enjoy the immediacy of a car designed to have its roof chopped off and the sharpness of controls and will not be subject to a marketing exercise to extract a few more $ out of their customers.

Its the place that 80% of the US will never get to visit (less than 20% of US citizens hold a passport) and unfortunately for the US it also creates a sense of self importance and arrogance that none of the rest of the world shares and then they wonder why they have created enemies?

If only Blair didn't have his tongue so shoved up Bush's arse we wouldn't also share the same enemies.

    Re: 997 4S...

Maybe we don't visit because cretins like YOU live there?
    Ever think of that?
    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

    Re: 997 4S...

Pleast take that to a politics board. This is a Porsche board. How do you think the guys on the politics board would feel if someone started having an arguement about Porsches?

    Re: 997 4S...

Good point, I'm done with this silly person anyway.
    Waste of my time.

So you don't have a passport either? Funny, I would never have guessed from your preconceptions and inability to articulate your point.

    Re: 997 4S...

    Chill Dude!

Save all your insults- there are plenty to go around. I much prefer to get personal when it's face to face, because any coward can be brave on a forum.

BTW, you make some pretty valid points. I still prefer the 997 4S Cab for many reasons( or any 911), and I don't fit in a Boxster or Cayman. All great cars- IMO! It's great that we have such choices.

    Peace out !

    Re: 997 4S...

Hard to believe so few americans have passports ........ European delivery of a Porsche is really something you should not miss if you love these cars and love driving them the way they were meant to be driven .
