    Re: R 63 AMG Launched

From a kinetical point of view sportscars and family vans with such an amount of power are equally dangerous. The later might not go as fast but the energy in case of an accident is tremendous.
On the other side we have people driving Cayennes at the limit, some people drive their GT's at or over the limit - the results might be similiar.
I agree that this power might be a waste or even threat in the hands of various people, but so could an E55 or M5 be - or even a Peugeot 206 RC...

Bottom end I don't believe that it makes a difference if you drive an ML or R-class with that engine, any high-powered SUV or similiar models are plain ridiculous and totally off the initial way of use!
I don't think that this hp war will infinitely continue - if you consider the first reports of the IAA autoshow in German TV, the "accusations" for not providing Hybrid vehicles to the public so far does a much bigger impact than anything else right now...

Yuk! Was this designed by a blind man? It looks like the illegitimate child of an estate car and a van.

Well, some new Mercedes models are nice looking, others look horrible but this is NOT the problem.
The problem is the PRICE TAG of the new 63 AMG models and the fact that a lot of "newbies" and people who never drove a 510 HP monster will find their way to these cars. And this somehow worries me, seeing a huge number of soccer moms and tie dads driving such a monster in daily traffic. I already had some funny CLK55/SL55/S55 encounters which were pretty scary and now this: they should sell special driving training classes with such cars. Because it makes a difference if a sportscar has 510 HP or a family car.

Imagine this: the 510 HP car driven by the soccer or icehockey mom during wintertime here in Sweden on winter tires! It can only end in disaster.

    Re: R 63 AMG Launched

I think its great that a car company finally realized that some people who buy minivans for their amazing practicality would also be willing to pay extra for more safety, more luxury, and more performance. Just like Porsche had the same realization regarding SUV buyers when they dreamed up the Cayenne TT (which most everyone thought was crazy at the time) at the height of the American SUV craze. The only thing stopping me from buying an R63 is the horrible MB reliability and the lack of sliding doors. If Porsche, Toyota/Lexus, or Honda/Acura would offer a minivan with the handling and performance of the CTT, I would be all over it.

If Porsche does that, I'm gonna go dance naked in front of Nick Berry's house, bowing down to his 430, dump a GT2 down a cliff in La Jolla and call Ferry Porsche a soccer dad...

And what did you do when Porsche announced it would make an SUV? Please post pictures...

Nah... Wouldn't want to get sued for giving you a heart attack. That poor, POOR GT3...
Seriously, the SUV wasn't THAT bad, after all, the Cayenne is actually regarded as a sporty vehicle and with some luck, it will be gone in a few years ($100/barrel oil, here we come). The only car I really wouldn't mind in the Porsche lineup would be a sports sedan (Panamera).

    Re: R 63 AMG Launched

I quite like it, not worried about the safety aspect either.

Problem we have round here is people buying porsches and ferrari's who aren't skill full enough to exploit them properly , unfortunatly they think that because they are driving a famous sports car they should be able to drive them very fast. Truth is AMG products despite the power are usually much easier to drive hard than most more focused sports/supercars.

Many a porsche driver would be quicker round a track in this bulky boy than in thier lovely 997, just because it'll be easier for them to drive hard and less likely to bite thier ass when you get it a bit wrong.

Much to thier annoyance I've passed quite a few supercar drivers on the track in my fat S55 saloon, it was just much easier to exploit its performance, now I've just got to give them a taste of the S65.
