    Just curious... regarding FWD cars

I was just thinking the other day, I've never heard of the world record topseed for a FWD car, and quickest 0-100kmh(62mph) for a FWD car. Anybody know what the figures are? Just some general knowledge and for interests sake

Re: Just curious... regarding FWD cars

i used to drive a front wheeled mitusbishi eclipse 3g (400hp tuned). definately had alot of g force

    amir i need figures!

Re: Just curious... regarding FWD cars

thats prolly because, honestly...who cares about FWD?

Re: Just curious... regarding FWD cars

Usually there is a limit to how much HP the front wheels can take, without using the rear wheels, before the car becomes undriveable and poorly performing.
That is because the front wheels are the steering wheels, and there is only so much traction they can share with driving/torque (without the help of the rears) before they compromise that steering. Imagine trying to steer a car and also laying down 350HP on the asfalt with those same 2 wheels already on the limit of traction...

Generally around 200-250HP max for a FWD, after that, all the extra HP is useless and hinders directionability and handling. Thats why you don't see FWD's sold with more HP that that, unless its aftermarket tunned.

So beyond that HP, makers use RWD or AWD setups. That why you don't hear much about acceleration or top speed records from FWD's since they are nothing to rave about due to lack of traction and HP, compared to a RWD or AWD car.

    Pontiac GXP <-- LINK
    303 HP & 323 lb/f & FWD
    its a pretty good article

Very true what Carlos said... Try flooring a normal 150 HP turbodiesel all the way. You don't even need to have over 200 HP to feel torque steer...

Re: Just curious... regarding FWD cars

Reminds me of the old volvo 850 turbo my mom had. Kinda a sleeper, but not really

    FWD = big smokey u-turns.

Re: Just curious... regarding FWD cars

I understand Carlos, but like I said, just out of interests sakes. I want to know what their limits so far have been, whether it isn't more than 150mph etc. Just want to know for one's own knowledge

    Yeap, even JC said so....
"Why do those people who drive Saabs have that smile on their face? To drive, its a nice and quiet & relaxing jet fighter sort of way......an engineer at Saab once told me the absolute limit for a FWD car is 220BHP....this has 250! The drive is just hysterical.....the way this thing goes in 2nd gear from 40 to 70mph is just ....SENSATIONAL ...never mind a 5 series BMW, this could do it quicker than a Porsche 911 Turbo" Jeremy Clarkson's review of the MY'04 9-5 Aero on BBC Top Gear

Yeah, I remember that. It does feel kind of exciting feeling all that power through the steering wheel.

Re: Just curious... regarding FWD cars

A 1970 Cadillac Eldorado and a 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado, both front wheel drive cars, each had 400 horsepower. The Caddy had a 500 cubic inch engine and the Olds used a 455 cubic inch engine. Lots of torque!

Back in the late 1970's, I remember my Dad's FWD Chevy Citation, it easily did 0-60 well under 12 seconds.

According to R&T, the following are some 0-60 times:
    Mitsubishi Eclipse GT 5.8 sec.
    Nissan Altima SE-R 5.9 sec.
    Dodge SRT4 5.9 sec.
    Honda Accord EX-V6 6.3 sec.
    SAAB 9-5 Aero 6.7 sec.
    Acura RSX-Type S 6.7 sec.
    Toyota Celica GTS 6.8 sec.

Re: Just curious... regarding FWD cars

Mike, theres louds of modded hatchbacks here by us in SA.
They mod those little cars to the extreme... Some of the most potent ones are Honda Civics with modified Honda Prelude 2.2 engines in.

Some of these cars are EXTREMELY powerfull. Sometimes pushing out up to 300kw or more.

thanks 964!! didn't even know FWD drag racers existed! wow 8 seconds... that's quicker than most RWD cars!

Re: Just curious... regarding FWD cars

1/4 mile in the low 8's! That's haulin butt and pretty amazing considering the weight transfer is going in the wrong direction.

not really, RWD drag cars can get well below 8 seconds. & those FWD drag cars have wheelie bars that push down on the ground when they accelerate
