Re: New info that sounds Fantastic for upcoming BMW M5....

RC, (with all due respect to your opinion)dont you think its a bit early to say that the M5 isnt a car for you? The car has not even come out yet, so you dont know how it drives(that may be enough to win you over?) I for one personally believe that(read my words) the M5 will out do the E55 AMG in every single catergory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for the 6er, I think it looks great and all of you must admit it is very original in design(maybe thats beacause so many dislike it; people usually feel more comftarble with familiar shapes and designs). Its long, low, wide, extremely well proportined, and has the big wheels that so many of us seem to like these days. I most defienetly will be checking this car out once it comes here stateside(Wouldnt be suprised if it ended up in my garage!!!!!!!!!!!!). BTW press drives for the new 6er and X3 start next month in Spain so look for articles with shots of the car in its natural beauty.

Re: New info that sounds Fantastic for upcoming BMW M5....

I think RC's preliminary evaluation was very fair.

Even though the M5 and E55 are in the same segment, I do not think you can say they appeal to the same exact people. For example: right now M cars only come in manuals and AMG cars only come in automatics. If you want a nice luxury car that can lay the hammer down too, I don't think BMW can make a car like Mercedes in terms of pure refinement and high speed stability. They still have no answer to the CL, SL, and S class AMGs.

Well, you have to believe it, otherwise you wouldn't stand to your Username, right?

I try to explain a little bit: the supercharged V8 engine on the current E55, SL55, etc. is one of the best engines I ever drove. It is extremely poweful (a "hammer"), the sound is great and it delivers massive and incredible torque at almost any rev range. I don't believe a normally aspirated V10 engine could be the same but I'm willing to judge the new M5 again as soon after I drove one.
No doubt, the suspension setup on the M5 will be much sportier than on the current E55. But to be honest: does anybody want to drive a sedan on the track? I wouldn't.
And finally: if the M5 is limited to 250 kph, this is no car for me. I like driving fast and I never considered buying a speed limited car. Maybe BMW will overthink this policy but I doubt it because limiting their cars to 250 kph also saves development/build cost.
And last but not least, I really like the automatic tranny on the E55. The Speedshift is one of the best auto trannies I ever drove, it shifts fast and very aggressive too.

To make myself clear: I don't consider the M5 to be a sports car and I also don't think that the E55 is a sports car. This is why I judge these sedans differently.
I sold my Porsche 996 Turbo RS-Tuning for one simple reason: I didn't get to drive it for almost 6 months because I had a lot of work to do, we already had a little daughter and my wife was pregnant again. My decision to sell the 911 Turbo (my dreamcar, honestly!) and go for the E55 instead wasn't based on my feelings but on rational thinking. I wanted to own a car to be able to move my family but to be able to have some fun too. The E55 was the only choice by that time and I have to confess that I regret it a little bit because I really miss my Turbo. So if somebody thinks a sedan can replace a sports car, no matter how much power it has, is dead wrong.

The new 6 series is a different story, I'm willing to give this new sports coupe a real chance and I won't judge it until I didn't drove one. Unfortunately I really doubt that BMW will put a Porsche-like handling capability to the 6 series because they want to sell this car to the "typical" Mercedes SL customer. I don't think that BMW targets the Porsche 911 but the more comfort oriented SL.

    Just an opinion of course...

Re: New info that sounds Fantastic for upcoming BMW M5....

    Christian,
Do you use the tip option in your E55?
The little buttons behind the steering wheel?
What do you think about them?
Does the engine does the heel and toe for you like F1 transmission?
Is it the same Auto transmission on the SL55?
And the steering? There's an other department where Merc lacks behind BMW I think, not to say Porsche. But I agree with you in terms of effortless performance though.
    Fanch.

Re: New info that sounds Fantastic for upcoming BMW M5....

Im really wanting to see the 6 in person!!! Even more so now hearing you guys talking about having already seen it in person and how much you love it! It would be great if one of you guys that has already seen it in person could describe what it looks like as well as a size comparison.

Christian, I believe that BMW already is changing this policy. As an example, I believe it is possible to specify one's M3 CSL without the speed limiter.

Re: New info that sounds Fantastic for upcoming BMW M5....

The M3 CSL can be ordered with a 280 kph limit if the customer is in the posession of an international racing license.
I recently talked to a BMW dealer who's a family friend about it and he told me that BMW is very strict about the license, no matter who you are. The racing license has to be issued to the name of the buyer of the car and the buyer has to sign a document where he confirms that he agrees to the terms, bla bla bla...
And: the CSL will be an exception, BMW has no plans to offer speed de-limited cars or to limit specific models at 300 kph (as AMG does).

BTW: when AMG raised the speed limit on my E55, I had to sign a document too (about safety, tire pressure, etc.).
And AMG doesn't officially advertise the speed raise anywhere, it is actually only something for customers who specifically ask for it...
