Cayenne article in Austin American Statesman,

    my local newspaper: web page.

The article notes that the largest number of buyers are coming from Mercedes (20.5%) and BMW (16.6%) and 15% are coming from Porsche.

While I really dislike Cayenne bashing (after all I am an owner ), in the hopes of generating more comments on the board I will post this quote from Jeff Schuster, director of North American forecasting for J.D. Power and Associates, :
    Quote:
Looking at the longer term, Schuster said, the question is whether the Cayenne will hurt Porsche with the hard-core enthusiasts. They are the automaker's most loyal customers, who "look at the Cayenne as being pure evil and something that does not belong in the brand," he said

Re: Cayenne article in Austin American Statesman,

Wow - 50% is a lot and it will surely raise with the V6. About the "Hardcore Fans": I'm sure that they get offered purer Purschs from the PAG if they would B U Y this pure Purschs like for eg GT3 - but actual and past numbers don`t looks so, so what? Yelling is one thing, ACTING the other.

Re: Cayenne article in Austin American Statesman,

Gary, I am a hardcore Porsche enthusiast but I can't see anything evil in the Cayenne. And I don't want to bash it, just tell things how I personally see them.
The Cayenne is, as I already stated in many posts, a very nice SUV, especially technically speaking. But it's design isn't what I call "refined" and it is too heavy and too expensive.
Maybe the cooperation with VW wasn't the best idea Porsche had but probably they didn't have another choice.
There is a strong rumor that Mercedes wanted to cooperate with Porsche to build the Cayenne (and I bet the results would have been much better) but they couldn't find a common ground.

Not just rumor. Porsche wanted to work with Mercedes but, as you say, they could not find common ground.

Re: Cayenne article in Austin American Statesman,

Yeah, they have worked together in the past.
Back a few years, the E500 was engineered and made by Porsche.
    Fanch.

Re: Cayenne article in Austin American Statesman,

If I recall correctly, Porsche and Mercedes Benz started talking to develop a SUV project together, but when MB demanded Porsche Stock (Firmenanteile/Aktien), Porsche stopped the negotiations and turned to VW.

I decided I wanted to comment on this some more.

Porsche and Mercedes had their discussions prior to the ML design. I don't know what their point(s) of disagreement was or were but I don't believe a Porsche/Mercedes SUV would have been better.

After talks broke off and the companies went their separate ways, Mercedes started designing an SUV to produce on it's own and Porsche found a partner with VW that was willing to give Porsche a free hand in the designing of the vehicle.

Mercedes did their design, R & D and testing quickly and came out with product in 1998. I suspect it was something of a rush job (although conceptually I see nothing wrong with it) with the bulk of the testing being left to the initial buyers.

VW was apparently willing to let Porsche take all the time they wanted for design, R&D and testing and the two companies finally produced product in late 2002. The Cayenne was technically superior to anything that had come before with true off-road capabilities. This was no poser.

The union of VW and Porsche on this project has likely resulted in a better product than a Mercedes/Porsche venture would have produced. The only negative has been the downmarket image problems Porsche has suffered with the Volkswagen name association. A partnership with Mercedes would have resulted in pressures to bring a product to market too early. Mercedes wanted to get a revenue stream going fast and work out the problems later.

"Mercedes wanted to get a revenue stream going fast and work out the problems later."

Which is why Mercedes has been taking a beating in JD Powers surveys in the last few years for build quality and reliability while Porsche has managed to stay on or near the top in those categories. My 98 ML320 (lasted 8 months) and 99 Kompressor (lasted 12 months) could not come close to the quality of my 1990 420 SEL (w126) that I just sold recently.
