Cayman doesn't do it for me

Hope this isn't thought of as a mis-post or off topic.
I just looked at some Cayman pics.
    http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?section_id=9&article_id=2835
It just doesn't "do it" for me like the 911 does.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

    Same here.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

Agreed. It's a Boxster with a hard top.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

I like the Cayman. No, it doesn't have the mystique of a 911, and I would take a base 997 over it any day, so I see where you're coming from, but it's still a very good car (but overpriced).
The initial impressions from all the journalists that have driven it have been very positive also.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

IF the Cayman had round headlight assemblies,
IF the Cayman had a 911 tail,
IF the Cayman had a 500HP turbocharged engine,
then I might be interested in it.

    I will too

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

If we're talking purely about the looks of the car, IMHO, 997>Boxster>Cayman.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

it's an ugly car but a great concept, mid-engine F1 style really pays off in performance, but it needs a serious redesign, the car does not flow. Front like a 911 but with a boxter rear and terrible side vents.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

    Everyone needs a home.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

I guess I'm unique, for me based purely on looks: Cayman > 911 > Boxster > Cayenne

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

My .02,......the Cayman definitely looks sleeker/sportier than the 911, but the 911 has a more classy / sophisticated look to it. Like most Porsches, especially the Cayman for some reason, you will have to see it in person before making a judgement. Most auto journalists made some of the same doubtful remarks about the Cayman before seeing it in person.....then quickly changed their minds once they did. I like both equally.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

I do not get this car ... it looks like a low budget kind of thing ... sure it drives great ... so overpriced .

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

I'm currently sitting in the 'dislike' Camp with this one. I will need to see it in the flesh before making a final decision, however, some of the car's 'size' ratio aspects appear dijointed. For example, is it just me, or does that roof look like it's assembled for a 7 foot tall person?

Given the choice between a 987 Boxster and this - I would take the 987. It just looks a lot more sleek and sharper to the eye.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

This sort of reminds me of when Porsche introduced the 968. It was an overpriced version of the 944 with a somewhat more powerful four banger engine than the 944 turbo (but about equal to the 944 Turbo S of which only 1800 were ever made). Porsche sold few of the 968 (about 5500 in total) and the series was over in four years. The relative differences in price and power between the 911 at the time and the 968 are somewhat similar to the current 997 and the Cayman and I note that the Cayman is a two seater just like the 968. See the parallels?

To me, the Cayman is an overpriced version of the Boxster S, albeit perhaps a better attempt than the 968. But I wonder whether we don't have the makings of another 968 here with the Cayman. I guess we'll know in a year or two.

As a side note for all you historians out there, remember that in 1995 Porsche came up with a 968 Turbo S and only 15 were ever made. If my memory serves me the 305hp 369ft-lbs 968 Turbo S was faster than the naturally aspirated 993 (and the 928, except perhaps the GTS). Since the 968 Turbo S would have been cheaper than both the 993 (and the 928GTS), this car was not well received by 911 owners and it was never officially put into production. Can you imagine how many people on this board would be screaming if Porsche introduces a Cayman Turbo S? I almost shudder at the thought.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

Does anyone have any guesses why all our 911 orders have been moved up? Maybe orders for the 06 911 are less than Porsche anticipated allowing the expedited build dates? Maybe some people who were going to order a 911 waited to see/drive the Cayman? Or maybe Porsche just plain hired lots more Turks to build their cars. You DO know that no self respecting German will work on the assembly lines any more right?

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

I actually like the Cayman looks, especially the hind quarters. To me, it's the sexiest Porsche shape on the market today.

The market concept and pricing is another story..

    Why?

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

I saw the Cayman S in Frankfurt - the car looked really nice - better than I expected

Same here. The car is MUCH better looking in real and does look very sporty!!!!

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

For those of you saying the Cayman is overpriced...
Do you also feel the 911 is overpriced? If not, why?

The Cayman has essentially almost the exact same interior of the 911/Boxster. The engine is the old 996 engine yet is priced 10K less than the original 996. Now how is it overpriced and the 911 is not?

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

It seems like a 60K+ boxter hardtop with more Hp ........

LOL... then I guess the 911 is a REALLY EXPENSIVE Boxster hardtop.
The Cayman is a better looking car in design terms, as well as performance potential. The 911 has heritage and a loyal following. You figure out which one would win the battle of top performing sports car if Porsche didn't strip down its own to make more profit.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

It seems that every Cayman S in the magazines was tested with ceramic brakes, PASM and Sport Chrono wich turns it into a 70K car, but they never say that!

It looks better in person I am sure. Would have been nicer if they gave it its own special interior and paint colors.

I think its CGT like wheels look good.

    The name is awful.

Moneywise, a properly optioned Cayman is too close to a Carrera, wich gives more performance and value at that price point.

Styling is unimportant to me, performance is everything.

That's a very good question. As you just said, the 911 has a very loyal following. It has a certain mystique that other Porsches, as good as they may be, do not possess. It isn't so much the car itself, but the options that are ridiculously overpriced. Start optioning a base 997 and its price will surpass that of a 997S faster than expected.
However, I do not own and am not currently in the market for a 997. They are still far outside of my price range right now. They are immensly fun to drive, and are still classy and even comfortable at the same time. Maybe if I were seriously considering purchasing one though, my opinions would quickly change.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

I've yet to see one in person but IMO and based on pics it sure looks like a winner.

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

I like the pictures I've seen. Just read the Et tu, Brute? article in Motor Trend (which DH keep hidden from me for fear I'd second guess our decision to get a 2005 997 -- I didn't).

The 911 is the bread and butter of Porsche....it also has such a loyal following, the car so exquisitely crafted that Porsche could increase the price of 911's and not take a sales hit. The Cayman is overpriced. I can't really think of any other occasion where the hardtop equivalent of a model cost MORE than the ragtop. Is the marginal increase in HP worth an extra 6K over the base price of a Boxster S? No.

By the time you load the Cayman to acceptable levels in terms of options, you'll be in 911 territory, and if you take a Cayman over a 911, I don't really know how to addrss that, unless you are a mid-engine configuration lover...

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

Not true. I went on holiday to Cuba this Summer. Gorgeous Caribbean resort. I met 3 GERMAN guys there who work on the production line for VW, Continental and Mercedes Benz. They earn good money on the line!

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

I personally don't like the look of the Cayman S. But it's a totally subjective reaction so, while I was left feeling cold when I saw it at the IAA in Frankfurt a few weeks ago, others might love it.

I think the car lacks presence. It also struck me as being the kind of car either (i) a sporty lady would buy, or (ii) a mid to late 20something guy would buy before he could afford a 911. A 911 is just more masculine and mature.

But these are just my subjective ramblings!

Re: Cayman doesn't do it for me

Dont like it , the design is neither here or there. It looks like someone got a bit tired sitting on the drawing board with it and thought f**k it that will do ..

Its looks like a Hairdressers car , thats what it is ..

    throt..
