How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

With all the anti theft devices how EXACTLY DO 997s get stolen?

I hear in Europe it's a huge problem.

Would covering your VIN number help?

None of my cars have their VIN numbers showing. Just slide a 3x3 inch black card over them on the dash side.

FWIW, I believe in some states you can mess with registration info on-line with VIN number and owner's name.

Re: How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

Interesting. Just use a little electrical tape.

Re: How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

I am curious, why would a covered VIN prevent theft?

VIN number is the way they ordered a new key for my BMW; did it over the phone (they said they know me since I bought several BMWs there) coincidentally my wife picked up the key, no questions asked. Go figure.

All they need is to rob the key codes from BMW (or Porsche?) computers and then what?

    Clever bastards

Re: How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

Frightening stuff! In my car, the visible VIN is under the front windscreen. There's no way to cover it. I guess I just take some comfort from the fact that there are so many fancy cars in London which are better than mine so people won't go out of their way to plan to take mine. False sense of security or safety in numbers?

They nick on demand / nick to order so you could still be unlucky..

Just bloody enjoy them because its all just negative speculative chat..

Re: How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

Whenever there's a new anti-theft device invented there's inevitably some new anti-anti-theft device that follows shortly thereafter. Seems there have been recent reports that all the new keyless owner-recognition entry/start systems are subject to wireless hackers as well.

Bottom line - if someone really wants to steal your pride-and-joy, there's a good chance they'll find a way. Otherwise, I-N-S-U-R-A-N-C-E.

Remember, just when you've made something fool-proof, someone invents a bigger fool.

Re: How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

Yeah.. Just remember that just as anti theft technology improves, the idiots that are making the stuff thatbreak into your car are getting smarter also, so that technology is getting better and better aswell.
    Sucks, really

Unless they changed things, you should be able to slide a black card in there between the glass and the dash.

On some newer cars, the VIN is in a small window within the black perimeter " bonded " portion of the windshield, so placed so that the owner can't cover it from the inside !

Wow! All the loopholes are getting closed. BTW, when's the GPS scheduled to phase-in reporting our speeds w/vin numbers to the cops?

No need for cops - the ECU/GPS/retina scan will just report your speed , time , direction and location to the appropriate tax collecting jurisdiction the moment you are driving 0.1 mph over the speed limit of ANY road !

Re: How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

If they steal my 997, its just the excuse I need to order another one!

I would suspect most dealers would require ID plus car registration if they didn't personally know you.....

Re: How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

There is no way you can completely stop you car from getting stolen. But you CAN make it harder to steal than the next car. It's a bit like the joke about two guys being chased by a bear in the woods - when one stops to put his running shoes on, it's not because he expects to be able to outrun the bear, just his friend. I put a steering wheel lock on my 997. It's called a DISCLOK and is pretty good apparently. Generally thieves will go for a car without any visual deterrent.

Exactly right - that's what I have on my car so it's physically impossible to put anything between it and the windscreen.

Re: How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

Me too! And I don't have an electrical outlet on the passenger side, which means I have to trail my V1 cable over my gear lever! Welcome to the updates in the 06 model.

Mine's 06 has the outlet. Maybe check again? The outlet isn't really that obvious. It's kinda up high and back there... .

Mine also has a 12v in the rear center console "glove compartment" not talking about the ashtray here.

Re: How do 997s get stolen? Cover your VIN #?

Ok will check in the day-light. I have the rear center console one as well, but my dealer told me that the one in the passenger side was gone in the 06 models and I did not think to check.

    Thanks MMD.
