    Transmission limits

Does anyone know what is the maximum torque that the standard transmission train of the 996 Turbo S can safely transmit?

In other words, when we upgrade the power/torque output, how far can we go before the components of the transmission train (manual gearbox or Tiptronic, halfshafts etc.) start to exceed their design limits?

    Re: Transmission limits

I had the EvO Stage 4, which I loved and is around 570 HP and 560 lbs and I blew the half shafts at the track.

    Re: Transmission limits

The turbo S/X50 comes with a strengthened gearbox in either 6 speed manual or Tiptronic.

    Re: Transmission limits

    ummm ,
about the (tiptronic) , i heared that the maximum HP it can handle safely under 560 hp .. i dont know how much the torque is .. but it can be modified by 9FF .. by changing its cluchs to be able to handle the 800 hp .. cool is it ?

A myth. Sharky from SF has about 800 bhp on his Tip and has done nothing to it except added cooling. And he uses it for drag races all day long.

    Re: Transmission limits

Sharkey added cooling and a torque converter, otherwise, he's running a stock Tippie. He's, definietly, testing the limits of the gearbox.

    Re: Transmission limits

I always understood that its the prodigious Torque that kills the gearbox components, not the Horsepower.

    Re: Transmission limits

I'd say up to 700-750 Nm aren't really a problem, you'll have a harder time to find a clutch system (for daily driving too) which can cope with that torque without problems. Retrofitting a gearbox cooling system may improve the situation a little bit, especially for track racing. But I actually never heard of serious gearbox problems on cars with up to 800 Nm torque and around 600 HP power. It is much harder to find a clutch system which "suits" you for all purposes with that torque.

The Tiptronic S is another story, I wouldn't go too much over 700 Nm with it.

A pretty "reliable" Turbo tuning setup would be around 560 HP and maximum 750 Nm of torque. Everything over 600 HP and 800 Nm of torque should include serious overworking of the engine, gearbox, cooling system, etc. Another "sensitive" part may be the visco clutch, especially if you're also using non-factory approved tire/rim combos.

Well, my gear box broke although I only have 620NM

I had my gearbox replaced on my 996 TT after around 11000 km, the car still had the stock 420 HP. The new gearbox has been retrofitted with an oil cooling system and the car has been tuned to aprox. 560 HP (543 HP on the paper). Drove almost 20000 km with that setup VERY VERY hard and had not a single problem. The guy who bought my car drove another 30000 km, incl. track racing, with my car without any problems. Just bad luck for you, I guess.

    Re: Transmission limits

    RC (and others),

Isn't the clutch (at least in manual trannies) usually the "weak link" when handling incrementally greater torque? And that it's not only how many newton-meters we're dealing with, but also how well one engages/disengages the clutch in certain gears and at certain rpm's?

Right, the clutch is indeed the weak link. I know many 996 Turbo owners who have lots of engine power and actually never had problems with the engine and gearbox but...of course...the clutch. Also a very common problem on tuned 996 Turbo: broken Tiptronic (if tuned way over 500 HP) and of course the visco clutch.

You are probably right. The intersting thing was that Porsche did not replace the gear box but repaired the broken parts. Interesting, isn't it?

P.S.: The gear box broke after ca. 48.000km

May I ask why did you have it replaced at such early mileage?
