    Picking Up My Spare!

    The spare I ordered is in. I can't wait to shove it in the car. Thanks to gradyex for doing alot of the initial research. (this might be his picture). Anyway, have any of you no-longer-waiters been thinking about the no-spare issue anymore or have you forgotten about it?

    Thank heaven's for the back "seats," huh? Now I understand the excitement over the Carrera hatchback possibility

    What a waste of trunk space .. how could you ever go on a road trip with that thing ?

    Have your Porsche parts guy review these numbers with you:

    P/N 996-362-020-02 Emergency Tire
    P/N 996-722-101-00 Wheel Insert
    P/N 996-721-211-00 Scissors Jack
    P/N 999-571-074-30 Mounting Bolt
    P/N 999-361-521-00 Tire Boot
    P/N 996-361-411-00 Belt

    Not sure of lug wrench numbers because it comes in a tool kit (get one from Griot's garage.com?)... .



    All you really need is the tire and jack (and lug wrench). The other stuff is what comes with the 996 tire kit (foam insert, big plastic bag, etc).

    I even have one in my 986....in the front.

    Have you checked to see if you can put a rear wheel and tire behind your seat when it's flat???

    I guess I'm hoping the TPMS will keep me out of trouble in my soon to arrive '06 997S.

    In two years I've picked up 3 nails in my '03 996 but have yet to have an actual flat. I always seem to get lucky, knock on wood, and notice that a tire is low. At which point I head straight for my local tire repair shop. In fact, it's the same with all of our cars, when I notice a low tire I have it repaired straight away.

    However, there's no doubt that I'm dreading the proverbial 4 hour wait in the night on the side of the road for Porsche roadside assistance or AAA. But I need my trunk space for roadtrips and trips to the grocery store.

    Save me TPMS, save me!

    Yes. I checked that on the second day I owned the car. After doing everything possible with advancing the adaptive sport seats, the rear tire does in fact slip back there without any scuffing of seatback or door frame. It's a real tribute to Porsche "engineering" because there is about 1 millimeter to spare

    TPMS is good, yes. You should at least get yourself a DIY plug kit and a jack and lug wrench. That way you have a chance of not using the goo.

    Here's a phot of the tire facing forward. Without the foam insert that holds the jack there's alot of room left for groceries in plastic bags inside the hub. The tire really doesn't take up THAT much space, it just makes it hard for suitcases and big stuff to fit... .

    How secure is your spare- will it move a lot and possibly dent your trunk during an emergency stop?

    Thanks MMD, I want the peace of mind with a spare. You always end up with a flat that is in the middle of nowhere - or even worse, a place your Porsche will last about 3 minutes if unattended. I called my dealer to order today, and the parts person didn't even know that the 997 didn't have a spare! Well, I ordered it all for about $1000.

    Thanks for the test. Was that with 19" or 18" rims? Will the 19" fit in the back seat?

    Yes the 19"s in rear will fit in the back seat. I've hit the brakes many times with no issues denting front hood (be sure to secure tire like photo above with bungie or some sort of strap). I take it along on long weekend hauls, especially where my cell phone will read "no signal". Biggest arguement against spare is loss of trunk space and added weight so its still a compromise. I really don't notice the added weight and in certain situations (with stiffer suspension setting) it actually improves "bouncing" up front with the extra lbs. BTW last weekend I put 6 gallons of 100 octane unleaded at infinion raceway and after about 15-20 minutes of driving with passenger, spare, + light luggage the car ran STRONG, SMOOTH, and hit redline a bit quicker than usual. Thats the price us Californians have to pay with the 91 octane BS. Our cars need 94 to reach their full potential, but thats another thread, another time. If you are really worried about not having a spare and don't trust the goop or have a crappy cell phone like myself, get the spare, otherwise pass on it IMHO.

    997's don't come with a spare...

    Good point. I'm gonna tear into it next week and find a way to BOLT the sucker down. Will report back. May have to weld a bolt (more properly, a stud) to a plate and rivit the plate to the car chassis... .

    dnp_now, yes they're 19s but remember the overall diameter is always the same no matter which wheels you have.

    I've contacted my Uk dealer, and they claim that the P/N wheel that you've installed will not fit in the boot of then 997s. i will be taking the pictures with me to show him!

    Incidentally, I read above that in all, it costs in the US about $1000. Well thats more than it costs here, as i was quoted about Pounds550 all in. Funny that, as ususally Porsche give things away to you US buyers!
