    Supertest at Nürburgring

    From 6speedonline. Anybody know more?

"...he said that on Sept 26 (yesterday!), there was a magazine sponsored test on the 'Ring for several supercars:

    1) Carrera GT
    2) Maserati MC12
    3) MB CLK DTM
    4) Ferrari F430
    5) Bentley Continental GT
    6) BMW M6 (delimited)

The drivers involved in the test are just as exciting as the cars:

    1) Walter Rohrl
    2) Hans Stuck (sp?)
    3) Heinz-Harald Frentzen (ex F1 driver)
    4) Klaus Ludwig (multiple DTM champion)

Format will have each driver getting 3 laps in each of the cars.

Rohrl mentioned that Olaf Manthey told him that there was a customer Macca F1 at Manthey's shop, in for some mods. And Walter was hoping that the owner would allow the Macca to be included in the super test.

I have no idea how the test went, or even if it pushed thru (any German 6Speeders know?). I did my first ever laps of the 'Ring a few days prior, on Sept 21-22, and went back on the 25th to watch the public 'Ring day. Sadly, I had to fly back home to Asia on the evening of the same day, so i missed the bloody test by a day! (oh, and I made sure to visit Manthey Racing, and sure enough, there was a gorgeous blue Macca F1 parked right inside the office lobby!)

I can't remember which magazine was sponsoring the test. Though i'm pretty sure it was neither Sport Auto nor Auto Bild."

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

Still no Enzo, but I guess the MC12 will give us an idea. I know it seems a little crazy, but I'm interested to see how the M6 and F430 compare.

Despite all the M5 hype the F430 was still the faster track car by a nice margin, but on a big track like this a delimited M6 could prove to be very impressive.

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

Just out of interest I'm interested in the gulf between an average non-pro driver and walter rohrl, and also how consistent the pro drivers are?

It is really to put ring times into context - I guess that most of us are at least a minute slower than the pro's with 30 seconds of lee-way or tolerance.

I've always suspected that you need at least 30 seconds of difference on ring times to make an appreciable difference between average drivers.....

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

the gulf between an average non-pro driver and Walter Rohl makes the comparison of lap times obsolete. Walter Rohl can smoke an average driver in a Carerra GT with a Boxster S, provided the course is technical enough.

For this reason, its fun to look at these pro times and compare and wow ourselves, but most plebian drivers wouldn't dare push the cars to the limits like these guys do

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

I'm always amazed when watching a professional driver pilot a high performance car around a track.
It makes me realize what true driver talent is. The things that people like Rohl are capable of can't be taught.

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

Yes the clue to go fast is to be fast, not to get the fastest car.I remember a top gear episode in which a woman teaching driving tech at the ring drove as fast with a utility van as clarckson with a jaguar. Funny isn't it?

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

That wasn't any woman, that was the woman Sabine Schmitz BMW's Ring Taxi pilot and person with most laps around the Ring.

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

and she lapped the ring in 9 min and some seconds while Clarkson had major trouble getting below 10 min(eventually 9.58 I think). In the same car, a jaguar S-type diesel.

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

I'm betting it was German Mag Sport Auto, but hopefully English spaeking mags like EVO has rights to the article as well. BTW, two days after this amazing test, Michael Verges beat the production car record in a Radical. It seems like last week was a good time to hang around the Nurburgring....6:55 is the new lap record: http://www.radicalsportscars.com/news_folder/nord0905/index.php

    hi all.

I'm the person that posted on 6speed about the supertest. i still don't know if it actually pushed thru. it was walter rohrl that told me about it, as i had the fortune to spend time with him during the recent press launch of the Cayman S in Italy (which i'm sure will be the subject of Cayman articles in all the major car magazines in the next couple weeks).

i'm sure it wasn't Sport Auto that was sponsoring the test. Isn't Horst Von Saurma the editor of that mag, and one of the 'Ring greats as well. Rohrl mentioned the magazine, but he was trying to translate to english, and it came out something like "golden steering wheel" or something like that. ok, sounds goofy and maybe i misheard him over dinner, but that's what i remember.

during the launch of the 997 C4S in monaco earlier this year, he gave all the press present brief shotgun rides with him up a narrow mountain pass. that was one ride i will NEVER forget.

on the subject of the gap between a true world class driver such as Rohrl and an average enthusiast driver... based on that one memorable experience, well let's just say it really put things in perspective for me. NO COMPARISON AT ALL.

if anyone hears any news about the Nurburgring test, i hope they post it here!

    cheers all

There's a yearly test that's called "Goldenes Lenkrad", which would be the transaltion of "golden steering wheel". In this test some more or less well known German people try to find out the best newcomer in different car classes. So maybe in this year's issue, which should be due in a couple of weeks, W. Röhrl tested some new sports cars. Unfortunately that doesn't mean they recorded any track data with those cars.

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

Well, now I know which newspaper has done the Nürburgring test. It was German "Bild am Sonntag", which is the Sunday issue of a daily newspaper which can be compared to the British "Sun".
I haven't read the article by myself but read about it in another forum. Unfortunately there was little info about the test itself, only bashing of the newspaper.
All I know is that Ferrari refused to send two F430 (as all the other manufacturers did with their models) and that W. Röhrl was VERY disappointed about his test drive in the F430 which he did two weeks ago at the Ring. He should have said something like "I tried my very best but yet I was slower than in all the other cars (Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Lamborghini) and after two laps at the Ring, the brake pads were ripped off the calipers"...

Anyone here got some more info?

Sorry! The only time I come into contact with the "Bild am Sonntag" is after it has been recycled to toilet paper.

Same here, but I thought I'd better ask...

    Re: Supertest at Nürburgring

BTW, Ring-time of the F430, driven by W.Röhrl, is said to be 8.18...

While on our summer vacation in South France, I saw a fisherman selling fish on the market, wrapping it up in a BILD Zeitung. What a shame...that fish looked very tasty...before he wrapped it up.

Well, there are not a lot of people that interact so intensely with their newspaper.
