    Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

A Limited Slip Differential (22% traction, 27% coasting) is now available for the MY2004 996 C2 as an option. Option Code is M220. Price tag in Germany is 1102,00 Euro (incl. 16% VAT).

Apparently the LSD is not available for cars with the 30 mm sport suspension (X74) but I'm not sure if this is a mistake in the data I got.

The LSD option is not available for the 996 Targa or 996 C2 Cabriolet. It is also not available for Tiptronic equipped cars.
PSM, M030 and 18'' wheels are mandatory for the LSD option! The LSD is not available without PSM!

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

hey rc, you still sure no retrofit is possible for those of us with PSM and 18"s?

Officially not due to PSM programming and some other hardware changes on the rear axle.
I bet we find out more and precise information as soon as we know what is involved in LSD install, PSM programming, etc.
Right now, the answer is NO but it can change.
Porsche is pretty restrictive about such kind of retrofits, so it may take some time until we get official word (or unofficial retrofit info ).

    Hi,

I'm quite sure it is possible. If not officially by PAG then with your preferred tuner. A friend of mine got the new sport suspension (PAG) and LSD retrofited in his 996tt. This was done by RS Tuning.

    Cheers
    Thomas

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

Thanks for the info RC. I thought they would offer LSD on 997 but I guess this is smart to try it out and iron out the kinks before 997 production.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

Great news. But I bet, that the LSD will never be available for the Boxster.

    LSD on a 996 Turbo?

Regarding Porsche Turbo Sport Suspension: Porsche Tequipment offers a retrofit too, this is nothing special.
They just have a little bit problems with spare parts, so right now they offer the sport suspension only on new cars.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

Very interesting how many retrictions and mandatory options are present here. Hopefully not so much of them will be present with the upcoming 997, although I am very happy Porsche has given this valuable performance item back to us as an option.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

btw, this isn't really an "option" as in add'l $$, is it? to charge for an LSD on a sports car like the 911 would exceed the typical notion of asinine. then again, they actually sell the X50 (8% power increase for a 16% increase in base MSRP) and X51 (8% power increase for a 20% increase in base MSRP - in fact, this 8% power increase is about the cost of an entirely new 996 motor).

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

Not having an LSD in a 996 C2 is quite a hinderance. I spin up the inside wheel on the tight turns on alot of the tracks. Summit, LR, Pocono... I think the Glen may be the only one I can get through w/o some spin. PSM was the only option and it does not solve this. It's another blow to the 996 for club racing too. The 993's and 964 all had them, why can't I???

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

Ben, I agree 100 % with you on the price structure of Porsche - but, keep in mind, that Porsche NA is inflating the prices on X-51 and X-50. In Germany, X-50 cost is about $ 12,900 (here $ 17,990), X-51 in Germany is $ 7,990 (here $ 13,990).
But as long we here in the US keep on paying this excessive mark-up from Porsche North America, PCNA is going to continue to take our hard earned money.
(the prices from Germany are also retail prices!).

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

wow, that is astounding how much more PCNA picks our pockets for in the U.S., +39% and +75% respectively!

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

That would be for all of the extensive testing they do before they allow an option and all of the extra warranty coverage. I am getting sarcastic in my old age here.

They have to earn money, don't they?
    And yes, testing is expensive.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

We are talking here about mark-up above the normal Importer price structure, what I call simply excessive by Porsche PCNA for the "poor" American Porsche buyer.

    LSD on a 996 Turbo?

Sure, it's an option for the '04- 996TT and is called "X75" :
Locking differential (Exclusive) and the X75 comes with special front and rear sway bars.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

The X75 option does not appear in the US preliminary order guide for the '04 TT, nor '04 TT Cab. Is this a late breaking option or a ROW option?

I don't find any X75 option, just X73 which is the ROW 20 mm sport suspension incl. different swaybars.
Maybe I'm wrong but a LSD on the 996 Turbo doesn't make much sense, does it? Or do I miss something???

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

Yes, some AWD cars do have LSD (Mitsubishi EVO and Subaru WRX STi)...

Grant, you're right. I didn't say this doesn't exist, I just said it doesn't make much sense. The Mitsubishi EVO and Subaru WRX are actually cars build for Rallye Racing. For pure track racing (asphalt), the LSD on a AWD car doesn't make any sense, it just raises weight and doesn't enhance track capability in any way, on the contrary.
I don't exclude that there is a X75 LSD option for the 996 Turbo but I still have my problems to see any sense in it.

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

Well, I don't know too much about the Rally-bred EVO and STi, but I understand that they are very fast around an asphalt track - EVO (271hp) beat a new E46 M3 (333hp) in a recent test...

Re: Limited Slip Differential for 996 C2 (MY2004)

Wait a minute ?? to my knowledge they all have Limited Slip Diferentials. But there are center LSD's which splits torque b/w front and rear in AWD's and and rear/front LSD's which split torque b/w left and right wheels (RWD or AWD), and also different types of LSD:

    - 996TT has a "viscous-coupling" type Limited Slip Differential in the center to split torque b/w front and rear which makes it AWD, but has no front or rear real mechanical LSD, instead it uses the Automatic Brake Differential (ABD) which is an electronic differential instead in order to be compatible with the PSM.

    - 40th aniversary 911 doesn't have a center diff because its RWD not AWD but instead of the ABD of the current RWD 996's (except GT3/GT2) now has the a traditional mechanical differential lock LSD in the rear and is finally compatible with PSM (GT3/GT2 have differential lock LSD hats why they couldn't have PSM). The E46-M3 is RWD too and has a viscous diff for example, and the E36-M3 had a differential lock type like the GT3.

    - Impreza/Lancia Delta Integrale/Ford RS cosworth/Lancer EVO (euro spec) types have a centre LSD's like the 996TT since the are AWD's but instead of being the just viscous coupling LSD of the 996TT, its a combination of the traditional mechanical differential lock LSD and the viscous-coupling LSD, called "viscous-coupling differential lock". Besides this centre diff they also have rear & front mechanical diff's (unlike the 996TT) of the viscous or torsen type to futher improve grip. Giving them the excellent traction/handling in various surface conditions.

So as I understand it, the AWD 996's have LSD of the viscous type in the centre and none at the rear and front except for the electronic ABD. Now with these news that diff lock is compatible with PSM we could expect the future generation AWD 911's to have also LSD on rear axle as well as the viscous centre to improve its handling even further because mechanical LSD's are sportier, less intrusive that electronic differential like the ABD or Audi's Haldex system, just like the rally based impreza/Lance EVO, etc. So it would make sense to add mech LSD's to the AWD 911's at least rear axle?

The torsen (audi's "quattro" in A4 and up) is the really heavy differential which, is permanent and instant acting compared to the others, but does not permit variation in the torque rear vs front which is permanently set to 50:50 therefore not very sporty and handles like a FWD car but great for grip in slippery conditions. This is the one that doesn't make sense in sportcars IMO.

If I missed something or gotten it wrong please correct me, I'm not an expert at this and I'm here to learn
