Difference in price with Canada and the US

I knew that Porsche was gouging us poor canadians, but just going through the car configurator I can see just how much.

I optioned the car as I would like it. Well optioned but not really over the top (slate grey/terracotta, PASM, Sport Chrono, Xenons, manual sports seats with painted backs and some trim upgrades)

Base price in the US - $58,900 and with options $80,165
Price in Canada (in USD) - $71,676 with options $97,971

That's a $12,776 price gouge over the current exchange rate and a WHOPPING $17,806 gouge after options. In canadian dollars the car is base $83,900 and with the options came out to $114,680 !!!!! That's $10,000 MORE than a 997 and only $4,000 less than a base 997S!!!

For that price you can get one of a handful of 2001 996 turbos for sale in Toronto. I know I would be shocked, but nowhere near this shocked...

Re: Difference in price with Canada and the US

Does that include any taxes imposed in Canada?

Re: Difference in price with Canada and the US

We all know the US car market is super competitive and Porsche has to act accordingly .... I would say the same apply to Europe where Porsche cars are more expensive than in the US.

Right now a savy guy would buy a 997 in the US (without telling Porsche's salesman his intention) and ship the car back to Europe and pay import duties and VAT...

Actually the same goes for many goods such as computers, cell phones ... even the new IPod Nano is at "par" whilst the exchange rate is 1.20$=1Eur ... go figure out.

Re: Difference in price with Canada and the US

Unless I am missing something, the price difference is due to the weak American dollar. In the early 90s, when the exchange rate was $1.50 CAD for $1.00 USD, Canada was the cheapest place to buy Porsches. When I lived in Canada, I would tease PPBB about how much less we paid. Perhaps Porsche is making up for its "lost" revenue. LOL!

Re: Difference in price with Canada and the US

have anyone bought a porsche in us then import it back to canada?

Re: Difference in price with Canada and the US

Matt, you're right. The price difference is due to the currency exchange. A few years ago it was cheaper to buy a Porsche in Canada if you take the exchange into account. Now that the Canadian dollar is so strong (or the U.S is so week) it seems that we get screwed over in Canada!! It's still a lot cheaper in Canada than in the UK though I feel sorry for you guys

Re: Difference in price with Canada and the US

My (US) Porsche salesman tells me that he gets calls every week from people in Europe wanting to buy cars. He says the giveaway is that soon after the introduction they convert their interest from a single car to 5 or 6. Porsche NA do not allow him to sell to such people, he says.
As someone who lives in both the UK and USA I find the price differences somewhat galling as my (US) 997 in the US cost $75k on the road (Pounds41,700) whereas my (UK) Cayman S is going to cost me somewhat more than that, Pounds52,000. Why? Value Added Tax (VAT) does not account for the difference.
Obviously for me there is a problem with buying a car in the US and bringing it back to Europe because the steering wheel is on the wrong side for the UK. However, if I lived in France or Germany when in Europe instead of the UK I would seriously consider buying a Porsche in the US. I have bought a Corvette in the past in the USA and imported it into the UK and it is not too much of a hassle.
There really is very little difference in the underlying technical specification these days betwee Euro and US cars and the US cars tend to have a rather better spec as standard.
