    Video module so Navigation can display DVD

    Does anyone have any idea if there is a video module for the Porsche Cayenne Nav unit that would enable it to display a DVD picture if a DVD player was connected to it. I want to put LCD screens in my driver and passenger rear head rests so my kids could enjoy movies in the back . Yes, I know that I could simply buy a all in one Audiovox DVD player/monitor and mount it on the ceiling in back but I prefer to display video up front then tie in both headrest screens and have a DVD changer hidden in back .

    Any help would be appreciated,

    OK just spoke to Allen at NAV-TV.. Here is the deal.. you ship them your factory NAV unit and they hardwire a video input with a FM Modulator and supply a external switch for changing the video source. This enables you to hook up a DVD changer or TV tuner to the factory NAV screen.. Now he said that they only sell this to a Stereo shop so you have
    to find or get your local dealer to set up a account with them.. Ball park figure is $600 for this... Also of course there is no warranty coverage from them in respect to something failing on the Porsche head unit... So they guarantee it will be working when they send it back to you.. but if something goes wrong.. you then deal with Porsche.. and I would think that when they see wires coming out of the back of the unit they may Void the warranty on the NAV unit... On the other hand.. how many issues are there with a NAV unit going wrong.. and you could disconnect the wires from the back of the unit and take it in.... So who wants to be the first Guinea Pig?

    yes this thing is complicated and expensive. I asked the local dealer for a TV unit and he answered thats not available from factory yet.

    Here in Germany is a company which eqip a Cayenne with a DVD - they use the normal NAV screen, install two more TFT`s
    in the back from the frontseats, install also a external DVD player for........... 9.000 Euro!!!!! And this sounds like a bunch
    of crap for big, big money to me. So I leave things like they are.

    It also sucks that this unit dont have a AUX input for external
    equipment like MD Player etc. Mercedes have a AUX input in their Command since years...

    Kevin,

    Actually did not know Navtv was doing this for the Porsche Cayenne yet . On there web site they do not advertise selling modules for Porsche so I was just clueless where to go for this. I was so upset my Cayenne came with Nav because I was very excited to install the DVD for the kids . Thanks for the help, I will have my local Stereo shop give them a call after the weekend.

    A photo of that system. Interesting how they can get two programs going at once on the system. I think there is the real possibility the navagation image was cut and paste. The MOST system is difficult to hack into.

    A little advise regarding the Cayenne's PCM2: do not mess around with it because of the MOST bus.
    If the MOST bus gets a modified or false data packet from the PCM2, the whole electronics on your car can be messed up.
    Including alarm system, engine(!), automatic tranny, air suspension, etc.
    I had a problem with my APS50 on my E55 (also works with a MOST bus) and it created weird problems with all kind of electronics. A DC engineer explained it to me: the MOST system is like a little network, all devices are connected one to another through the MOST bus. If one device delivers false data packets, it can provoke weird behaviour of the other devices.
    Now I have the COMAND APS installed on my E55, it is almost the same unit as the PCM2 (same manufacturer) and I needed 4(!) software updates until the problems it created (also withing the whole network!) stopped.

    So do yourself a favor and wait another year or so until a company comes up with a specialized solution for the MOST bus of the PCM2. In Germany, there is a company which offers now a solution for the COMAND APS but they never thought it is possible until recently. As far as I know, they're the most advanced manufacturer for such "adapters", so maybe you'll see a similar device in a few months for the Cayenne's PCM2 too.

    And last but not least: Porsche will soon offer their own "Multi Media" solution for the Cayenne through Exclusive department. I'm not sure however if this solution will be retrofittable.

    RC Whats your opinion on adding a FM Modulator to the PCM II I wanted to add my Phatnoise music keg which just ties into the FM antenna.. would that screw with the system?

    A law was recently passed in Texas, SB 209, that makes any video display that can be seen from the driver's seat illegal. I suspect other states have similar laws.

    Porsche plans to introduce a TV tuner module for the Cayenne PCM. I wonder how this will work in Texas? Maybe the module will also come with a screen(s) viewable from the rear seat only.

    Also planned for PCM: a Voice Control Module controlling audio and navigation functions and an Off-road Navigation Module featuring waypoint and retrace functions.

    Shouldn't create any problem.
    But why not using the AUX connector, there should be one on the PCM 2 too (at least on the PCM unit itself). The COMAND APS on my E55 offers the option of an AUX connector in the glove compartment (which is standard on all factory COMAND APS equipped cars).
    I'm using a FM Modulator on our ML55 AMG, there is a Traxdata Mstation Jukebox (MP3 Player with a 10 Gig HDD) connected to it. It works well but sometimes, especially when listening to music with pretty quiet passages, I can hear interference noise from the engine. I can live with that.

    Gary, I don't think that the TV option (planned for 2004) will be available to the US market.
    Maybe the PCM 2 gets the same option as on the Mercedes COMAND APS: the Satellite Radio option.

    I'm not sure but I remember I saw one on the back of a PCM 2 unit I saw uninstalled. I'll check on it as soon as possible.
    However, the FM Modulator should work fine too.
