    Aston Martin V8 vs 997

That baby Aston is looking pretty damn good. Would you guys buy it INSTEAD of a 997?

For me the PROS of the Aston are:
    -less of them out there
    -that interior
    -You're driving Bonds car

    CONS:
    -I assume doesn't handle/perform like the 997
-Waiting list I heard is ridiculous

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

in this Sport auto issue (10/2005) the uncle Horst test the new V8 ...
the Ring time is better than 997S .....of course the V8 mounts the Pirelli Corsa .
whith "standard" tires the car isn't faster than Porsche ......(about 10 secs of difference) .
hope u find the scan of the article .

I saw the V8 at IAA in Frankfurt : a good japanies car ,and quite poor design (imho)

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

The Aston looks great, but Aston's reputation for service and support is pretty poor. It may or may not be a reliable car. Time will tell if the product is one of quality or just good looks.

The 997 is hard to beat. It is a reliable, fast and useable sportscar. It does everything well without fuss. I have no hesitation in jumping in the 997s and driving long distance into no mans land (in other words, no dealers). In the twisties, it is an absolutely superb sports car.

The AM still comes across to me as a 'look at me' car. Maybe ok in some towns, but not for my daily driver.

Agree with the above. I would never take an AM V8 over a 911TT (current owner of a 996TSCab ), but vs. a Carrera, the comparo. is closer, and the attraction of the AM to me is looks, especially when added to a stable that includes a 996TT and/or 997TT. Still waiting on the supercharged convertible.

Also have glancing F-car interests, and feel uncomfortable spending entire retirement savings on 3-4 sports cars (2 seems tempting enough ).

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

I may be one of the few that also prefers the looks of the 997 more too.

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

Pounds210 for set of 2 valve caps on A.M if it got stolen! that a riped off!!

everything on aston martin are over price!! but u don get the service as good as porsche dealer!!

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

This is a totally different car more of a GT and does not look like near as much fun . That is what is comes down to right fun .

All the reviews of the AMV8 I've read so far (Car, Evo, Autocar) go to great lengths to stress that it is a sports car and definitely not a GT. Don't forget, it's much smaller than a DB9, doesn't have the rear seats and handles very differently.

Whether it is better or worse than a 911S is a moot point - most reviewers rate the 911S better, but apparently the difference is minute. In Evo they tested it against a -20mm/PCCB equipped car and the Porsche ate it up on the track, although the difference was less on the road.

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

Isn't the A-M price about the same as a Turbo S?

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

I found it less attractive in the real ay-t the IAA then on the pics.
It remains a very beautiful car, but i thaugt to be more impressed by it then i actually was at the show.
Hereby a pic of engine and machine which are due to beat our beloved p's...
By the way, clarckson(topgear) foud it fantastic , but liked the p more

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

    The headers are gorgeous!

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

Wait and see how much it is worth after a year on the road. The drop in value is disastrous compared to a 911

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

    any pics?

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

Although the AMV8 temporarily tempted me from afar some months back, I must say that, as the months have gone by, the first allure of the AMV8 appears to have worn off me. No doubt it is beautiful but a car lives and dies according to its performance. It has to cut the mustard or pay due deference to the car that outperforms it. The AMV8 is a great car, no doubt about it, but the 997S is a truly EPIC car.

Within the sub Pounds100k price range, nothing comes close. The fact that people are forever comparing it to cars costing Pounds117k+ just says it all.

I wonder how much humble pie people will have to eat when the 997TTS comes out. I hope (and quietly expect) it will blow the doors off an F430 or Gallardo.

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

PORSCHE 997 - better service, better looks (IMO obviously), better performance (AND MPG!), better cornering, CHEAPER, shorter waiting list, flat six engine noise, engine in the back (unique), probably better dealer network and service, cheaper servicing, less depreciation.

I totally agree with your post, I to really fancied the Aston, but find the performance reviews disappointing and with each week of ownership I seem to love my car C2S more and more. As far as I'm concerned, the Aston had to be very good to compensate for the usual reliability issues.

An Aston body on a 997 would probably be the ultimate for me. I'm looking forward to delivery of the Turbo which will be a very serious, no BS car.

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

jeeez, that car is just so gorgeous!
But I, also think that I may be a little less tempted than before, to give up the P car advantages.
If it were a little more stellar on the braking and handling, I would almost be willing to give up the speed advantages, of say my '03 996TT. For what this car is going to end up selling for, you could put together one hell of a 997.
    regards,
    crosdaddy

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

the AM V8 styling looks great! If you want a GT, get the AM. But if you want a race car with heritage to match...stay with the Porsche!

Re: Aston Martin V8 vs 997

Back in the day, my father had a 75 AMV8, absolutely gorgeous and hand-built work of art, very fast for a 70s car. I used to love to just sit in it, which is mainly what I did since it rarely saw the road due to chronic mechanical failures. I live in the Southern US and the AC never worked. Still a lovely car. I'm sure the newer cars are in a different league of reliability. Nonetheless, if you have the Porsche sickness at all, it's hard to choose anything else. I love British cars, but I love Porsches more as they have reliability alongside the heritage and visceral personality.
