    Houston...we got a problem!

Ron from Houston, Rennteam.com moderator, friend and fellow car enthusiast, is "missing" for two days now. I tried to contact him but he doesn't reply to my email and he also isn't logged in to our forums like he was before on a daily basis. I'm somehow worried about his whereabouts, especially since he has a wife and two little kids and we here a lot of horror stories about a Houston evacuation here in Germany.

Could somebody actually confirm how bad or good the situation is around Houston? Does somebody from Houston or Texas know something about Ron and his family?
It may sound ridiculous and I apologize if I sound like an old worried mother but Ron has been a good buddy of mine for the past few years and I want to know what is going on.

Oh, Ron...if you read this: REPLY to my emails and tell me if you and your family are safe. Thanks for reading this!

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

I heard about Houston being affected on the news today... first thing I tought was about Ron

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

    RC,
    Just PMed you.
He's fine, I talked to him today. He left for Dallas yesteday, what is normally a 3 to 4 hour journey took him 14 hours! Bumper to bumper all the way!
But he and his family and safe, they're staying in a hotel and they'll come back next week I guess.

I need to watch the news more... I was aware of an second incoming hurricane, but I didn't realise it would affect Texas that severely!

At least Ron and his family are safe! I hope damage and loss of life will be minimal to the people that did stay behind. My prayers are with them all.

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

Houston is going to be a mess most of the weekend. I am staying at work to help take care of some of our patients that couldn't be evacuated. My hospital expects to lose external power some time Saturday morning (our time) but with any luck the storm will pass slightly to the east of us and we will spared the majority of flooding, etc.

A hospital next door has a 15 story construction crane next to it; I have some concerns that it will not be able to withstand 100+mph winds if Rita gets close to us.

My hospital and most others in the Texas Medical Center were thoroughly upgraded for storm and flood damage after a tropical storm 5 years ago. So we now have watertight bulwarks in the basement, long term diesel generator power, water facilities, etc. They have been importing additional pharmaceuticals and disposables for the past week. All our elective surgeries and invasive cardiac procedures have been cancelled, although emergency cases will still be performed. I don't know the status of the blood bank and nursing staff, but these are the two areas that typically are in shorterst supply. Most patients that were able to be transferred or released are now gone, but since we are a tertiary referral center there are many who will require continuous care and are too unstable to move. We may still have a few from the New Orleans evacuation!

I'll be parking my Boxster on the 5th or 6th floor of the garage...I know it can tolerate winds much higher than 100mph

Anyway, wish us well, we need a little luck to avoid some serious damage!

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

    mcdelaug,

You folks are in my thoughts and prayers!

Please try to avoid windows in the tall buildings- I heard the wind is very much amplified when it passes between such buildings.

    Rita is another monster storm.

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

    mcdelaug,
My best wishes and all the luck to you and yours!!

Its hard to imagine this situations, and even more when its nearly impossible to happen this in your country...

    Go away Rita!!!

Good luck you and your patients.

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

Ironic that both these hurricanes are named after women...
wonder if someons is trying to tell us something!

on a more serious note, hang in there! i hope the storm blows over too

There IS that old "Why are women like hurricanes?" joke...

There IS a reason for that. At least in the past bad weather (low-pressure areas) have been named with women's names, good weather (high-pressure areas) by male's names. This was invented by the meteorologists. Some female-rights organisation finally made them end this habit - us men are just too weak to resist women's pleadings.

Anyways, good luck to all of you guys down in Southern US!

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

Good news that the Houston hospitals are prepared! The NO hospitals did very poorly. When Frances hit us last year we had generator power but ran out of water and could not do any hemodialysis. It is very sobering to consider how many people depend upon the continuous delivery of electricity and water for their survival. Hopefully Houston will only get the backside of Rita which will minimize wind damage. I don't think NO is going to fare well again. Stay safe!

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

    mcdelaug

To you and everyone whos in Rita's path I say godspeed and plz take care of yourselves.

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

    mcdelaug,
Whilst we do not envy your situation I'm sure we all admire your dedication and courage.

    Best wishes.

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

Good luck, mcdelaug. We are all hoping for the best!

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

    Just a brief update:

The storm passed east of us by about 120 miles, so we had some strong winds and rain, but fortunately a lot less of a problem than it might have been. The hospital functioned very well overnight and we now expect to be able to accept transferred patiens from hospitals more directly affected, as well as new patients from our area. Thanks for your kind wishes, it appears they have paid off!

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

great stuff!! we're glad everyone is ok!

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

Awesome that everyone is OK! Saw CarreraGTRacer on AIM...he's a member here also and from Texas, so happy he's alright. The weather GODS looked after Texas this time. 3 cheers!!!

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

yeah the storm luckly moved towards the Houston so we were all safe here in Houston even though we left for Dallas...unlike Ron who got there in 14 hours it only took us 6 (fast driving/good time) Thank goodness everyone is ok!

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

    Hi RC and all

I'm touched, I didn't see this thread otherwise I would have posted sooner. Nonetheless, We've already communicated through emails few days ago.

I appreciate everyone's concerns and I'm glad to know that people in rennteam care about one another, it's a feeling that I can't describe.

fortunately Rita changed its path and didn't affect Houston, thank god. However our prayers are with the ones that are affected in other parts of Texas and Louisiana.

Thank you all again so much in particular RC, fanch, GM Austin, and temm

    Re: Houston...we got a problem!

You're welcome. We're all glad your back and happy nothing bad happened to you or your neighbors. I'm also real sorry for those people further up the coast that Rita did hit.
