I agree halfway with you on that, anyways nobody is forced to buy such a car. In fact I rather pity the people that don't have such a freedom of choice regarding their individual transportation and have to endure the high gas prices.

Prices in Germany have risen as well, in fact they are close to GB's prices by now...

I don't know why you got all worked up Bilal, most auto mags make wise cracks about fuel consumption, petrol costs etc. No big deal.

Although thats probobly the most common reason for buying them, they do have some other good aspects as well. These cars are easy to get in and out of (for the most part), the driver sits high and gets a better picture of the traffic (a nice feature for the soccer moms ) and most importantly, thats where you want your kids to be in a crash It's bad for the ones in the other car, but we could easily rationalise away that argument by thinking "what if it hits another SUV or a tree", and thats anyway not going to be nowhere near as important to us as our loved ones. The 63 will be a fast, easy to drive, goodlooking (to the ones who buy it atleast) and SAFE car to transport your family..

^^^ i agree with you... thats why I decided to trade my 05 E55 for a new ML350 ( damn had to wait for ML63, gonna get it anyway) Because its more comfortable, more space, and with Canadian winters you DO need 4x4! And coming from previsou generation of MLs, I had them all, ML320, ML430,ML55! I know for sure even ML350 is way far step ahead of what the previous generation were. And i bet ML63 is gonna be one bad ass SUv!!!

I perfectly understand the argument for safety, but the fact is that you won't be any safer in this than in a luxo barge (E55 anyone?), but you will do more damage to the other "party". I want my loved ones to be just as safe, but I truly don't believe in the SUV as the be-all end-all of cars. As for the getting in and out argument that's the thing I absilutely LOVE about these SUVs, but I still believe that anyone not having a medical condition should be able to get in and out of a normal passenger vehicle with ease. Maybe that's just me though. I do have a strong feeling that the SUV era will end as soon as the oil prices get high enough. Now don't get me wrong, if the consumption and pollution problems can be solved (ethanol engines anyone?) the SUV is a perfect vehicle for North America, with its wide-open avenues and huge parking lots. It does not, on the other hand, belong to Europe. I've seen an accident where some stupid soccer mom using a cell phone rammed a stationary Fiat Punto (size of a Geo Metro) at a stoplight. The rear part of the car was MISSING. Now imagine she hit the front of the car.

Well, the ML 55 weighed 2230 kg and the e 55 1835 kg, so theres some extra safety in those kgs allready.. But the most important thing is ofcourse where the "frame" (not sure if thats the right word) of the car is. If a ML smashes into an e55 it will hit it right in the e55s head passanger area, while the ml would take the hit mainly in the passangers feet height..

And about how everyone should be able to get into the e-class, we all seem to want our lives as easy as possible it seems, just consider the rise of automatics even in sport cars Hi Nick

The best way would be to get the 95% of the SUVS never used off road, well, of the road really. But as they are still out there, buying a SUV does indeed improve the safety for the people inside. For the people outside it's another story, but as I said above, that argument is easily "overlooked" compared to the safety of ones family..

I agree wholeheartedly with your post. However, I think the regulators could do a lot to get the SUVs off our roads. Like you said, safety matters, but since other people buying bigger and safer SUVs all the time makes YOU also buy an even bigger and safer SUV, wouldn't it just be a lot easier if we replaced them with limos? Driving behind an SUV is a nightmare, especially in a sports car, while I don't even want to try to imagine getting rammed by one... Like you said, safety of those OUTSIDE the vehicles is reduced and I, although rarely exposed to such risks, am strongly in favor of abolishing these vehicles for everyday road use. Cell-phone-wielding soccer moms and three-ton monstrosities just don't mix.
