    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

the more and more i see the cayman...the more i like it & it seems im not the only one

    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

I have now seen the Cayman in the flesh.... and I must say that it looks even BETTER in real than on the pics.
It looks longer than what it seems on pics and VERY SPORTY, specialy in silver ( even more sporty than the 911 )
I think this car is going to be a killer!
The rims à la CGT, look agressive and fit the car perfectly ( I didn't like them on the pics)
Looking forward to see the reptile on the roads....

No you are not The more I see of it, the more impressed I am by its aggressive looks. Can't wait to see it live!

I think it's agressive stance comes from the rear being flatter than the 911, thus giving it a very forward and agressive stance. It looks like it's going to jump you even when standing still And the flat rear hatch is going to make it look WIDE!

Here are two of my favourite pics of the Cayman, from pistonheads, which shows what I am trying to explain:

    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

wide rear, this is really a great angle.

    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

This car makes the 997 look old and worn. My sympathy for present 997 owners.

i second that. apart from the rear seats, nothing really speaks for the 997.

they should rename the "cayman" to "cannibalization".

    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

I talked to my dealer who has seen this car in person and told me it looks amazing in person.

My feeling is that Porsche is testing the water for the future replacement of 911, IMO.

    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

If I could afford it, I'd DEFINITELY pay 997S money for a Cayman with 997S hardware. I think MANY would.

I'd pay $20K more for a Cayman S in a heartbeat for a 3.8L engine, Bi-Xenons, 19" wheels, Turbo brakes, and PASM all from the factory.

Why not offer it? All Porsche seeks to protect is profits. If you charge the same, then they don't loose anything. People who want the legendary 911 shape, engine position, and rear seats can get a 911. Those who want more performance can get the Cayman.

    It's not very difficult.

    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

The Cayman and Boxster share a lot of things with the 911 - now you could argue that this is a shame for the more expensive model but I would see it the other way 'round. Engine (save the RMS issue), tranny and especially the suspension of those cars are superb and very similiar over the whole range. The Cayman with 997S-hardware would still have to be cheaper than the Carrera model which results in lower earnings for the company!

    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

Well while I share in the enthusiasm about the Cayman (I passed on a 996C4S and 997 post 986, Cayman on order), nobody is going to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Practically the entire Porsche management was cleaned out in the late 70s for attempting regicide and that lesson has not been lost on current management. The 911 continues to have a lot to offer and development continues to improve it, a testament to Porsche's inherent engineering competence if not the rear engine layout itself. With the advent of significant parts sharing among the Boxster/911 unique tooling costs are kept to a minimum, as such, even if 911 sales were to decline profit margins would remain high. Reports of the 911's demise are greatly exaggerated to paraphrase Mark Twain. That the 911 remains the top dog at Porsche is fine with me since I have no desire for my 911 friends to lose any sleep.

This IS the replacement for the 911
I predict that we will see a bigger and more powerful version of the Cayman S when the facelift comes, or at least when the next Cayman arrives.

    Why?
    1. Because the Cayman is "Porsche done right", not an engineering anomaly like the 911. A Cayman with equal power will always outperform a 911, the laws of physics will see to that. And to keep up with Ferrari, Lambo..., they will need a better platform than the rear-biased 911.
    2. I also think that customers might get fed up with with driving a superior but underpowered Cayman.
    3. And with Porsche being Porsche - maximizing profit while minimizing effort - I can't see them developing yet another model-line to replace the 911.

But don't worry, the 911 will probably live for many years to come, too many hardcore fans out there to kill it off just yet, but more as a niche product for those who like to be scared when driving

That's my two cents, as John Lydon once sang: "I could be wrong. I could be right"

    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

I am repeating what I said before.... the Cayman in the flesh looks MUCH MORE AGRESSIVE than on the pics!!!!
So..if you find that yellow one agressive, expect even more of it , and it is bigger than what these pics seem to show.
The 997 looks more elegant, mature.... but not as sporty! ( and this is a 997 4s soon to own telling you )

    Re: Best in show: Frankfurt

I too am a member of the "Love this car" club. What has just occurred to me though, is that I've not heard people complaining about the name lately...
