Tesla: The days of free Supercharging over?

    Not surprised...

Re: Tesla: The days of free Supercharging over?

As the Tesla fleet grows, this perk is fast becoming too expensive...it was just an early bait-and-switch marketing gimmick.

Re: Tesla: The days of free Supercharging over?

Wonder how many people use them per day. Cost is probably like $2-3 per charge, so no doubt it would balloon if they had 100K people charging up every day.

I honestly don't know why it was even free in the first place anyway. The average selling price of a Tesla is probably like $90K. People with $90K cars can't afford $9/month in electricity? And $9 is assuming they drive like 1200 miles per month and only charge at superchargers.

Re: Tesla: The days of free Supercharging over?

At the average rate for electricity around Los Angeles, buying enough electricity to power the Tesla for 1200 miles would be about $85.20

Not exactly a deal breaker to the average Tesla buyer, but still a bit more than $9

Re: Tesla: The days of free Supercharging over?

IMO the charging stations were never about local travel or cost; their goal was to counter the argument that electric cars are stuck in the city, and cannot be realistically used for cross-country travel.  Having said that, I would be very curious as to how many Tesla owners actually use this charging network to enable longer trips away from their home.  My guess is less than 10%....

Well how many people use their regular cars for big road trips? I see ton's of Tesla's these days in rural areas kiss

A collegue of mine took his tesla as a family car on a holiday from the Netherlands to Italy... took a bit of planning, but not the least bit of trouble, which surprised me, but kudos to him.

And that's the trouble with electric car, one has to plan. For gas cars, planning is not needed, gas stations are EVERYWHERE.

    Now, now.

We only charge our two Teslas in our own garage, or maybe the Tesla service center does it as a courtesy while they are working on them.

I don't give two hoots about "free charging".  I only wish more charging opportunities were dispersed around/near places I like to travel.  The Supercharging locations are a nice backup plan for cross-country travel.

I hope to be able (for a fee) to use them to charge my soon-to-be Porsche Mission E.  But I'm not holding my breath.

Hehe, I rather like the Model S - test drove one once. Just thought some of the locals were a bit odd.. it"s not like they cost a lot to charge.

I am very intrigued by the mention of the "next gen" solar panel technology. Any idea on the wattage output per square meter?

I figure with the efficiency of the Tesla model S and the size of it's shadow in direct overhead sunlight, current solar panel technology could for every hour of sunlight add an additional range of 3 miles.

It's not. Many Tesla owners do that even here in BC.

I have seen one even in use on Hwy 97C. A Tesla was parked on the side with a generator running and plugged in.

The electric range is just an estimate, and if the weather gets cold the range goes down the drain.

Re: Tesla: The days of free Supercharging over?

I like the way Tesla drives, but can't stand the cheap interior aside from the screen. Also the current Teslas are too large for me being a city dweller. That's why I have an i3 as my city car now. Range is rubbish compared to a tesla, but it just feels so special and as my city car I don't need the range.

Idealism and physics are often mutually exclusive as you just proved.  Even with 100% conversion there is simply not enough solar energy per m^2 to reach your stated goal.   Even the power profile for a vehicle is relatively fixed based on physics and functional profile.   Going from 50 kph to 100 kph requires quadrupling of power.

Hey, I positively love EVs, when done right.  Look at my sig to see I'm no EV hater.

Solar powered EVs, when done right, means lots of PV cells on your house and garage roof, not your vehicle roof.

Watts per square meter over time.  Watts per square meter is determined by sunshine and PV conversion efficiency -- approaches an asymptotic limit based on geography, weather, and perfect photo-to-electron conversion.   Long time is your friend as it allows storage of small energy rates into a bigger whole.   Unless one is prepared to keep the car always outside (no garage), car-mounted PV cells just don't excite me as even a small boost to a motive power source.  Power for ventilation fans? Sure.  Power to go?  Hard to figure how.

As  you have pointed out there are numerous factors to consider that limit the application of solar energy for uses in transportation.   Even EVs, as you are well acquainted with in your impressive fleet, have efficiencies approaching that of fossil fueled vehicles on a well-to-wheel basis if fossil fuel is used generate the electricity consumed by the EV.  Until an energy source is used, i.e., nuclear, the variability of production using wind and solar, means that backup generation sources, typically using fossil fuels, are needed for grid stability.

Too bad there are fewer and fewer individuals that understand these important issues.
