    Vette Z06 vs 997S

Just read the C&D review of the new Z06 and had two questions i hope you folks can answer.

    1. What is the top speed of the Z06?
    2. Are there any comparable track times for the 997S and the Z06? Nurburgring?

The Chevy seems like an unbelievable car, amazing acceleration, excellent skid pad, great stopping power but needs work on the chassis and steering.

    thanks

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

Chevy needs work on it's image too. A "good value" is not exactly a chick magnet attribute.

G(i)mV8 and his "followers" promised us some official nurburgring laptimes quite some time ago, but I haven't heard anything more about it

Who knows, maybe we manage to make this thread 15 pages as well

Nine eleven's history is too big to be compared to a chevy

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

The literature I got on Saturday from Kerbeck in Atlantic
City says the top speed is 198.

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

Should read Vette Z06 vs Cayman they are the same price .

The Vette is one of the few American cars with history too!

The Z06 lapped the ring in 7:43 which is an amazing time. Top speed is very close to 200 mph. Having had 2 previous Vettes, one of them a C5 Z06, it was a very tough decision for me. In the end, I chose the 997S

7:57 --- Lotec Porsche 993 Turbo, 600 PS, racing suspension

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

The corvette is suffering from the negative image of the american cars here.
Here in western Europe, it's maybe unfair but the corvette is typically a pimp's car. A rare car but a "too much" car...!
The 911, on the contrary, is considered as a classy car, even if all the sport cars become more and more "politically incorrect" here.
    With a 911, you're childish, bourgeois, a bit show-off but classy...
With a corvette, you're totally vulgar and hideously show-off. A sort of Harley-Davidson car...
It has not much to do with the intrinsic qualities of the two cars, but it does consciously or unconsciously determine the choice ...

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

Its opposite here in the US.

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

what about the new viper SRT-10.? I like this car very much. especially the new coupe one that is going to be in the market in 2 months...

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

My last four cars in order of ownership were a 2000 NSX, 2003 Z06, 2004 E46M3 and my current car 2006 997S. In order of preference I would rate as follows: Porsche, NSX, M3 and Z06. Cons of Z06 were build quality, interior appointments of a Cavalier (very cheap Chevy product), exterior dimensions did not fit interior dimensions (oversized - XXL), nagging maintenance issues that required multiple trips to dealership for correction, transmission had a long throw and difficult to shift smoothly (should come with a standard neck brace for your passenger), not a chick magnet but a magnet for middle age guys and for that matter guys of any age, far too common a site on USA roads and just overall no attention to detail. The pros were braking, acceleration and handling.

The Z06 is a brute and reminds me of a playground bully - poorly dressed with blemishes and foul language and no much regard for others. I drove the car for 2500 miles and traded it for the M3. I did go back and drive a literally new 2004 before I purchased the 997S just to be sure that I really wanted to spend the $40k difference.

    I purchased the 997S!!!!!

If your only concern is bang for buck and brute overall performance than I recommend the Z06. Here in the USA you are considered a "man of the people" with the Corvette. Similiar to the comraderie of the HD products. I was constantly waving and flashing my lights at total strangers (other Corvette drivers).

It is very hip to be a pimp these days even Lee Iacocca and Snoop Dogg are playing golf together at the most upscale contry club in LA , player style G !

    @hamilton93

Please be cautious with the claimed Z06 NBR lap time of 7:43. It is highly likely that the number is just a rumour spread by GM for marketing purposes.

For example, GM (Dave Hill) also claims that the regular C06 can do the NBR in 7:56 (see quote above). Now, that stongly contradicts the results achieved by independant car magazines (sportauto, NBR in 8:15).

Consequently, many are convinced that the Z06 will be far from 7:43 on the NBR. Personally, I would expect something around 7:55 to 8:00. Not more.

Hopefully, independant magazines will do a proper test of the car soon...

Call me biased, here is a bit more gasoline on the barbecue....wish I could articulate this better, but something humorous yet true that an automotive journalist wrote long ago about " never seeing an attractive person driving a Ferrari TestaRossa " unfortunately (with some exceptions) seems to apply to Corvette as well.

As someone said above, it has nothing to do with the tremendous numerical capabilities of the C6/Z06, although personally the 'Vette suspension/steering feels closer to Cadillac than it does to Porsche.

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

It's funny to note the differences in the images of the cars from continent to continent.
I remember the first ford mustang here in Europe : for us, it was a very strong and virile car, and show-off too...So the first time I travelled in the US, I was quite surprised and amused to note many young and attractive girls driving it...

now that line belongs to the Boxter .......

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

And incidentally, it's totally out of question here to compare a ferrari with a chevrolet !
The ferraris are considered as a capricious must for the mechanic latin lovers, and the porsche as a more reasonnable (!), robust (german) and dependable sport car... (RMS did you say ???)
Chevrolet, even sporty, as a kind of agricultural vehicles...
Those images of the cars were often associated with the images of the italian, german, and american women ...
Ridiculous, evidently, but it takes a long time to install and to change those stereotypes, as far as I know ...

Maybe in Texas, LOL! But in Los Angeles, you're a cheesy loser if you drive a Vette, whereas you're a just another regular guy with a Porsche.

Yeah, that about sums it up. I'd rather drive an SUV around town then a 'vette in LA. Better to blend in the crowd then to stand out like a sore thumb.

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

    Agreed...
I think the midwest and the south is about the only place where they actually like the car. However, it's really cool to drive a Camaro IROC-Z in LA.

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

This argument of Vette vs. Porsche never ends. I had it with friends and family long before the introduction of the new ZO6. The Vette is a great car, but to me it lacks the class and style of a Porsche.
I'll take a Porsche anyday, but I have to give respect to the new ZO6.

    Cartouche, you are too funny.
Gotta go, my wife --donning rucksack apron--says pancakes and sausage are ready!

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

In this area, for years, all you'd see were Corvettes... With the exception of my neighbor's 996TT, I'd go months or at least weeks without seeing a 911 of any year.(also except for Atlanta) Recently, I've seen almost as many 997's as Corvettes. I think more 997's used as daily drivers.

Never wanted a Corvette because didn't want people to say "50/50 chance that guy's a redneck living in a trailer" Never seen a Porsche parked in front of a trailer. My ex-secretary drove a red Z06... caught her stealing from my company. nuf said.

    www.track-challenge.com
A great website for Nurburgring tracktimes.

    Re: Vette Z06 vs 997S

did not expect this to stir up the emotions as it did, i was just looking for the numbers but here in Nor-Cal porsche's are fairly common. Porsche's are the i have just made a bunch of money from my startup (996s and 997s) or wanna be's in boxers (sorry IMO)

I was actually asking as a good friend on the East coast wants to buy the Vette and mothball it as an investment, he's a huge US muscle car fan and i have to say his 65 355 charger turns more heads then any P or F car.

    Cheers,
