IAA Frankfurt: am I totally nuts?

My wife and I are thinking of driving (yes, that's right, driving) from London to Frankfurt to go to the Motor Show on Saturday 24th Sept.

We will have to leave our home at 0100, catch a ferry at 0230 arriving in Calais at 0445 followed by a 5 hour drive to Frankfurt. What is the best route to take? How do I find the IAA once I reach Frankfurt?

Unfortunately, I have to be back in London on Sunday 25th so I have to squeeze it all into 1 day.

    Is this nuts?

Should I be flying instead? If I fly on Ryanair to Frankfurt (HAHN) airport, is it easy to get to the Motor Show by bus or train ?

Guys, I'm desperate to go to the show. Any advice on the best way for me to get there is much appreciated.

Plus, if I do make it there, it would be great to meet up with you for a drink... Feel free to PM me...

    Cheers...

Re: IAA Frankfurt: am I totally nuts?

    Defnitely not worth driving, fly.
As for where to find it, go to the official website of the show for info:

Re: IAA Frankfurt: am I totally nuts?

Sounds like something I could contemplate.. though I'd be more prone to try it on a weekday.

    Here's a scenario:
Preparation: Get flight tickets [LINK] and IAA ticket [LINK]
7:20-9:35: Fly Ryanair from Stansted to Frankfurt Hahn
10:15-12:15: Take the Bohr Omnibus to Frankfurt Main station [LINK]
12:15-12:30: Walk to the IAA entrance
    Afternoon: Enjoy the IAA
Early evening: Find a place to eat and rest your feet
19:00-20:45: Grab the bus back from the main station to Frankfurt Hahn airport
22:40-22:55: Fly back to Stansted with Ryanair

    Estimated costs for 1 person:
    Flight (roundtrip): 45 GBP
    Airport parking: 15 GBP
    Bus (round trip): 17 GBP
    IAA ticket: 10 GBP
    ------------------------
    87 GBP plus food

The drawback is clearly the bus journey from/to Hahn airport, but half a day at the show is still enough to see the major attractions... if you're tall enough to see over the heads of the millions of other car enthusiasts who are standing on your toes on a Saturday.

Re: IAA Frankfurt: am I totally nuts?

My girlfriends working that weekend!!! Maybe I should go.... Hmmmmm?

Re: IAA Frankfurt: am I totally nuts?

it is nuts - to drive... but as ente suggested you might do it with ryanair. even better if you can get a more expensive flight to frankfurt airport (hahn is 100 km away!), that is a peace of cake. 10 mins cab ride. try BA or lufthansa, you might fly back on sunday morning, makes the flight cheaper.

    cheers

Re: IAA Frankfurt: am I totally nuts?

True, British Airways has a roundtrip from Heathrow to the Rhein-Main Airport in Frankfurt for about 120 GBP through Expedia. It's 7:25 to 10:05 to get there and 20:25 to 21:05 for the flight back.

Re: IAA Frankfurt: am I totally nuts?

That's it! All this talk has left me wanting to go!!

Re: IAA Frankfurt: am I totally nuts?

    Hey guys,

let me tell you that the IAA is TOTALLY crowded on weekends! If you really want to go than I would definately recommend going Friday evening and spend the night at a hotel. Hotels in Frankfurt might be a bit crowded but you have plenty of choices around (Mainz, Darmstadt or some little village around).

Alternatively I recommend Ente's suggestion going to Frankfurt Airport. There are massive connections from FFM airport to the inner city, the IAA area is just a ten minutes WALK away from Frankfurt's main station.

The show is opened until 7 p.m. and time passes by so very fast - be sure to get some decent time there.
In case you go have tons of fun!

Ente, thanks very much for your help.

When I thought about it some more, it was obvious that I should fly. So, I'll fly from Stansted to Hahn like you suggested on Ryanair. Your itinerary is simply perfect. If I had planned it myself, I wouldn't have changed a thing.

Ryanair has a special web fare. Pounds0.01 per person each way. Including taxes etc it cost Pounds24.26 per person return. Dirt cheap.

BTW the Bohr Omnibus arrives at Frankfurt station at 1200. The journey is 1 hour 45 mins and costs 16 Euros for an adult day return.

Admission to the show is 13 Euros during the weekdays.

BTW I'm going on Thu 22 Sept with my wife. She's as much of a petrolhead as I am (Lucky me!) Hopefully, it'll be less busy during the weekdays. We'll have from around 1215 till 1845 to walk round. It would be nice to have a few days in Frankfurt but unfortunately I can't.

Does anybody know how busy it gets during the weekdays?

    Once again, thanks very much!
