May have a chance to look at a CLS55 at dealer this week. Probably won't get a test drive. They are different cars of course, but how does the drive experience compare?
Comparing apples to oranges, chicken meat to a porterhouse steak, etc., not really possible I'm afraid.
If you're living in a country with an Autobahn without speed limit and if you're very often on that Autobahn and/or enjoy a lot of comfort with reduced wind noise, almost no engine sound, etc., the CLS55 is the right car for you.
The 997 Carrera S is a sportscar, 100% pure blood.
On the straight line, you don't have many chances against a CLS55 in the upper 160 kph speed range (below that, the 997 CS has an advantage due to superior traction and a less intrusive traction/ESP system) but on all other driving occasions, the 997 is by far superior and provides more fun.
I came to a final (personal) conclusion: I have to decide what I want and I found the perfect "trio" for me.
997 Carrera S for real fun, Cayenne Turbo Powerkit for moving the family and those days I just want to relax, Boxster S with Tiptronic and sport chrono for sunny days in the city and on little country roads.
The 997 Carrera S will be replaced next year or so by the 997 Turbo S.
Mercedes has VERY interesting cars now and it gets even more interesting (SLK 63 AMG with that 510 HP engine, no kidding) BUT they don't build sportscars and even my wife, a real SLK fanatic (until she got the Boxster S...
) and somebody who doesn't care too much about how a car is driving, acknowledged that Porsche is a different kind of car, it touches the senses and provides a "happy" feeling, as funny as this may sound.
I don't know how old you are but if you're under 60, you can drive a CLS55 when you're OVER 60. Enjoy life.
