Terrible, looks like a mish mash of lines, jags, angles and shapes. The only reason that people are not laughing this car right out of the show is because most have gotten used to the design after looking at the Z4 vert for a few years now.
The front is the worst part, imo. It's bulgy, like the front of a shoe.

having seen both life within 10 minutes i must say the z4 looks better imo. while the cayman looks a bit like a smallbreasted 911 the z4 is more indipendent and muscular. maybe a caymann rs would make things look different, but as is now I prefer the z4 too (we are talking looks, not driving dynamics!)

The only thing I don't like - judging from the pics - is the rear decklid trying to incorportate itself into the rest of the body. I predict that the car looks much better in reality, the first couple of pics are photographed from a very high point of view - most cars look rather dull in that way.
Besides that the sidewindows don't really complement the Z4's side curves but this is rather a minor complaint - especially since I believe that this was done on purpose...

because of the looks. as turbolite put it, i think the beemer looks more muscular, more special. bangle's flaming surfaces are really growing on me.
i've not driven both cars yet (of course), but i could imagine that the cayman's handling actually is way superior (at least Z4 convertible steering feels very remote). but i'm a poseur, so there...

In fact it was the Californian designstudio of BMW which presented the first proposals for the Z4. If you watch the development of the latest models, one can see that the cars coming up after the Z4 - especially the X3 and 1-series - have a different approach to shape the body. They are much more dictated by convex and concave surfaces, a decreasing window sill and the slope along the side panels.

I cetainly wouldn't buy one of these. I owned a 1999 M-Roadster (based on the Z3), and I liked its look. I am certainly in the camp that BMW Bangled, er, bungled, this design, but, we'll see if it sells. . . .
