OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

Yesterday i discovered an oil linkage in the back section of the car in the front part of the engine , near the metal box under the engine(sorry for bad description should be in front of the oil box)

It's not so intensive linkage, to see oil stains on the floor yet. BUT some parts under the car are dirty with oil.

    So Porsche Greece said.

Its a linkage from the crankcase - i think its the known RMS problem.

So they suggested, that they clean it first, and see if the linkage will continue after 2 weeks.
They told me that its a common problem ,and in some cases the linkage might stop.

The thing is, how possible is that the linkage will stop by itself???

Another suggestion was for me to wait UNTIL the service, or until i change the clutch.

Now i have 14,000 kms on the car. Service is long time from now.

BUT funny thing is, that, they told me that the average clutch life for a carrera is 40,000 to 45,000 kms.

NOW is that a little NOT optimistic or what???? What kind of car has a clutch life of 40,000 kms??

What is your opinion on this? and if someone has a pic of RMS problem, please post the pic

    many thanx!

Re: OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

The RMS may stop leaking, but for a while, it will start leaking again, so if the RMS is leaking you WILL have to replace it. And since it on warranty, have them do it now.

    A Porsche!
I guess it also depends on how you drive & shift but my 996's clutch lasted way more than 45,000km and still no sign of being worn out with plenty of hard and sporty driving miles... so don't be waiting until it wears out to replace the leaking RMS.

Re: OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

THANX Carlos i wasnt going to, but its the hope of stop leaking that took me away.

do you have any pic of the RMS leak point? i think someone has posted a pic in the past

Re: OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

Don't be fooled. The leak might stop but it might mean the car leaked a few drops a few miles before you parked it; the result is no oil left in the seal to leak in your garage. It happened to me for a week there was no leak and then it "started" again. In fact it was leaking all along but NOT always in my garage. Sorry to hear of your problem: I feel your pain.

Re: OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

I had the dreaded RMS leak on my boxster. The dealer replaced the seal 2 times and it would not stopp leaking, especially after a more spirited drive. Ultimately they told me that the engine had to be replaced!!! Ouch, bieng out of warranty by 5k miles I told them that they should still honor the warranty and we came to a compromise... ultimately landing me in my new 997S. Bottom line, it will NOT fix itself. get it fixed now not later.

Re: OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

GUYS THANX FOR THE HELP , MMD could you point in the picture the point of leak? and this is a 997 engine pic?

Re: OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

Not a great picture, but it would show up in the spot at arrow behind that cross piece.

You can see under the car where the engine case and the bell housing (transmission) meet. THAT'S where wet oil spot will be.

Re: OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

Oh the actual leak point is here

Re: OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

here's the seal. it's huge!! reason why it will leak. One factor is the centrifical forces on the oil are enormous compared to a smaller seal. The main factor is Porsche doesn't machine the crankcase so it is precisely concentric with the crankshaft. They rely on the raw casting to be perfect in this regard. (that's what I heard, anyway).

If that really were true, ALL the seals would leak both around their outside diameter (seal to casting), due to poor fit, and insíde diameter (seal lip to shaft), due to not being concentric.

Re: OIL LINKAGE: Possibly RMS any suggestions?

Big D, get it fix so the oil doesn't cause premature wear on the clutch. I had RMS, too, but all is fine now.

I don't think any seals leak on their outside perimiter. There's lots of rubber being compressed on the outside of the seal's steel ring.

As far as the delicate *inside* perimiter of the seal is concerned there's more problems there.

The casting can be very accurate but not accurate enough when vibrations and spinning oil on a large journal considered. More expensive engines have the area surrounding the seal machined in a manner which mates it to the particular crankshaft. What I read... .
