    Front License Plates in California

For those of you in CA, do you have the front plate attached? It's my understanding that we are supposed to, but I really don't want to do it. For those of you that don't, have you had a lot of tickets? Thanks.

Re: Front License Plates in California

    I don't have it attached

Re: Front License Plates in California

I dont. Have had 1 fix it ticket which cost about $10 I think. I got some double sided tape (pretty thick stuff) and stuck my front plate assembly on, went to the dmv who signed off the ticket without even looking at it(!). Funny enough the plate "fell off" and I keep it in the trunk with tape still attached just in case I get stopped again. When I stuck it on, it was surprisingly solid and would pass any inspection.

Re: Front License Plates in California

No. LA's a little tougher though.

Re: Front License Plates in California

Know lots of guys who never put plates on their P/F's, without ticket/hassle.
Likelihood of ticket is prob higher when ticketed for speeding in smaller cities where they're trying to get front plates on cars for red light cameras....and speeding on these cities' urban/suburban streets (at what, 15MPH over the limit?)just isn't that pleasurable anyway....
Have heard CHP, as usual, is very reasonable re: issue....
Given the absurd percentage of drivers that are uninsured and/or DUI and/or driving recklessly in heavy traffic, suspect front plate per se on high-end cars is a relatively inane issue for any reasonable police officer...and the ones that are unreasonable will mindlessly enforce every trivial technical violation anyway....

Re: Front License Plates in California

    True!

No: Front License Plates in California

I keep mine in the front bonnet, not on the nose. There does not seem to be an issue here in northern california, but SoCal looks at it as a big revenue source.

I got a ticket from a meter maid in Santa Barbara last year, and my kid got one from a meter maid as well. I ended up putting the plate on her car, more to protect the front end than anything.

either way, it is a $10 fix it ticket.

Re: Front License Plates in California

I've had 2 fix-it tickets (they're $100) and both times it was a metermaid that got me. When they issued the parking ticket, they slapped on the fix-it ticket too. I didn't think about doing a temporary fix w/ duct tape so I ended up paying them. Now I know better!

Re: Front License Plates in California

I keep my plate in a plastic folder between the drivers seat and console. I know that doesn't do much good but in the rare event that I have to park it in a meter I place it up toward the front of my dashboard where its visable. Still not legal but so far in almost 10 years no problem. If the ticket is $100, I would just pay it and not fix it. Porsches look horrible with USA plates! At least in Europe and other contries the plate is narrower and not an eyesore.

Re: Front License Plates in California

I don't have the front plate on and have had two problems. Frirst, I once parked at LAX where they have metermaids that go around and give tickets to anyone without proper plates. I think the ticket was $20. A second time, I got pulled over for not putting my registration sticker on my rear plate. I had the sticker in the glove box and slapped it right on for the CHP. The F*#&ker gave me a fix it ticket ($10) for both the front and rare plate even though I put the sticker on right in front of him. Guess he was jealous of my car.

Since then, I keep the plate in the front trunk. I figured out how to set up the plate holder so that I can slide it in and out of the front bumper without damaging the car. Basically, you need to screw in the holder to the plate only half way so the clips that hold the plate into the bumper do not expand the whole way. Now when I park at LAX I slide the plate and then pull it off when I leave. If I ever got pulled over, I would do the same thing and just tell the cop that it feel off or some crap like that.

Re: Front License Plates in California

Yes, the metermaids (--"persons"--PC) in San Francisco are vexatious in their vehement enforcement of vehicle code violations...it's very menacing! Not to mention the recent ticket price increase!!!!

Just say no to front plates! Cheers, another Jeff in SF.

Re: Front License Plates in California

So, do the metermaids ticket non-front plated cars just for that violation...or is the violation bundled w/a separate parking violation? Do some police actually pull people over just for the lack of front plate....or is it part of a speeding/other moving violation? And, if one's ticketed, the fine is only $10-$100 if one chooses to not rape front bumper and waste time showing up at DMV/court w/some phony front plate contraption? What's so complicated here?

Seems to me this is a no-brainer....a small, no-points ticket even when fined vs raping a bumper....and, despite living in relatively socialist City of SF, I rarely need to park on street anyway....have great garage spots at home and office...and restaurants I frequent let me park in front (w/typically another new P/F/Merc adjacent)...isn't that part of cost-of-ownership of any high-end urban commuter car to minimize odds of pkg scuffs?....have never gotten a ticket and haven't heard of other guys w/similar pkg patterns w/any issues...

And as one of my pals joked w/me...there's a lot of upside to getting new cars every few mths, given it takes CA DMV a few mths to issue plates anyway.....

This whole front plate issue sounds like that fascinating LA idea of filling the P w/87 octane to afford the mthly pmts w/gas @$3+/gall.....

Re: Front License Plates in California

Not a money saving issue VKSF, rather a hassle issue. I'm not going to put it on to start with and see how it goes. Friend of mine has never had any front plate on P cars (over last 10 years in LA) and has only picked up 3 or 4 tickets. Going to see how it goes.

Re: Front License Plates in California

    VKSF,

I think the meterfascists can issue tickets solely for lack of front plate. As for the SFPD pulling over "innocent" civilians for this, I doubt it as they have better things to do like stop at TOSCA's while on their beat for a "house coffee"...

I don't have the luxury of being able to leave my car constantly in a garage, I'm in real estate and am frequently showing people's homes. Tickets are a cost of business.

Where do you eat, Quince? I always see F & P cars outside that restaurant...

Just say no to bumper rape.

Re: Front License Plates in California

I have not had a front license plate on my nicer cars for over 20 years. No tickets yet for that infraction. Even when I have gotten speeding tickets, never had The MAN mention the missing plate.

Re: Front License Plates in California

I don't have any plates on any of my cars except for the wife's SUV. Never had a problem, but then again, it's worth it for the hassle. Price for keeping it looking good.

I have NO PLATES at all....

Here's what I did... I never took off the temp. registration sticker they put in your front window at the dealer and then never installed plates at all. That way people assume the car is brand new and I have not received the plates yet.... Has worked so far.... If I get pulled over and they ask I have the plates and will just say I have not had a chance to put them on yet. Which is true.... I've been VERY busy... DRIVING

Re: Front License Plates in California

No front plate and no problem so far. Hopefully the over worked Bay Area police have more productive things to do than worry about front license plate violators. Anyway, I'm willing to take the chance on a fix-it ticket.

Re: Front License Plates in California

5 months and no ticket... knock on wood.

Re: Front License Plates in California

no front plate on two of our cars been two months, knock on wood as well

Re: Front License Plates in California

In California it is required by law; however, they generally don't bother you until you are stopped for something else, like speeding or a rolling stop. It is then a fix it ticket and a small fine. I do not have it on and the holes for the bracket are plugged.
