Unfortunately Ed, I predict that you will find more and more guns leaking into your country illegally. And they'll be in the hands of criminals (which goes without saying, criminals aren't terribly concerned with gun control laws). It's one of those things that once the cancer takes hold, there's no chemotherapy that will stop it entirely. Then you've got to face up to what you're going to do about it, which is a shame. There's no absolutely right answer to any of these questions. The only solution is a self-correcting society that maintains ethics from within. The government can't keep the guns out of your country.
It'd be damn nice in the U.S. if we didn't have to worry about gun violence. But we do, and I respect environmentally conscious hunters and sport-shooters rights to own and enjoy arms. And there's NO DENYING, that if you ever are faced with an armed insurgency by a hostile intruding country or force, an armed population is vital. In Switzerland, the policy of a gun in every home deterred a Nazi invasion. You can't live in this world, and just "pretend away" the threats, and live in denial. What do you say to your family as they're being one-by-one assassinated in front of you, by either an invading army, or just a crazy scumbag? "Sorry kids, I thought having a gun would endanger you".... Gee, that worked out, huh? A gun is just an object. It's the odd ill user that's the murderer. Properly stored and secured, it's something that you hope you never use. But if you must, that means you would have likely DIED without it. My dad has a rather enormous antique rifle and pistol collection. A total of six fully packed 1-ton gun safes, that you'd need a small army of people to haul off with or get into. If the U.S. is ever invaded, it would be nice if every household was armed like my pops. The insurgents wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell.
In conclusion, I'd jump for joy in a world with no guns. BUT, no such world will ever exist in our lifetime. So, unless you just enjoy the feeling of being peaceable so much that you're content to live with your head in the sand and bunny rabbits and rainbows in your thoughts..... it's not a bad idea to have some heat locked up in a safe that you have the combination down to a 5-second science, should you need it. In my opinion...
