Re: A WORD FOR NEW ORLEANS

Rennteam has a international audience. I want to thank the more than 60 countries who have offered and sent assistance
    to the disaster victims.

Katrina left a giant mess. Its 90,000 square miles of disaster. All of the politcal finger pointing and hand wringing is really just a side show to the real problems
of environmental, infrastructure and human loss never seen
before on such a scale in the US.

Again, I wish to thank the international community for their
thoughts, concerns and actions. Thank you!

Re: A WORD FOR NEW ORLEANS

@69bossnine: Yes, and the target is always being moved as well.

A vote for me will end most highway speed limits, air conditioning in congressional offices, commercials
on cable television and the NFA of 1934.

Oh what a great VP you would be Jimflat...

Re: A WORD FOR NEW ORLEANS

69bossnine, you write very eloquently and I agree 100% with what you say. Liberal do-gooders or the "bleeding heart brigade" are all too prominent here in the UK and their answer seems increasingly to "hand-out" to the poor as you put it in the form of tax credits etc. As a result we have a government that stifles enterprise and encourages apathy and reliance on the state.

Interesting stuff though - I also liked the debate about guns vs no guns. We obviously have the latter here in the UK and the result generally is that if you are going to get burgled , the chances are that the burglar will not have a gun. I prefer to keep things that way. Even most of our police don't carry guns (nor do they want to) for similar reasons.

As for Katrina, the whole tragedy has had me glued to my television set. It is horrific to hear about the shooting and violence, but I am all to aware (as in Iraq) of the dangers of a media who need a story more than they need the truth.

Lastly, why doesn't Rennteam have an Off Topic room?

Re: A WORD FOR NEW ORLEANS

Unfortunately Ed, I predict that you will find more and more guns leaking into your country illegally. And they'll be in the hands of criminals (which goes without saying, criminals aren't terribly concerned with gun control laws). It's one of those things that once the cancer takes hold, there's no chemotherapy that will stop it entirely. Then you've got to face up to what you're going to do about it, which is a shame. There's no absolutely right answer to any of these questions. The only solution is a self-correcting society that maintains ethics from within. The government can't keep the guns out of your country.

It'd be damn nice in the U.S. if we didn't have to worry about gun violence. But we do, and I respect environmentally conscious hunters and sport-shooters rights to own and enjoy arms. And there's NO DENYING, that if you ever are faced with an armed insurgency by a hostile intruding country or force, an armed population is vital. In Switzerland, the policy of a gun in every home deterred a Nazi invasion. You can't live in this world, and just "pretend away" the threats, and live in denial. What do you say to your family as they're being one-by-one assassinated in front of you, by either an invading army, or just a crazy scumbag? "Sorry kids, I thought having a gun would endanger you".... Gee, that worked out, huh? A gun is just an object. It's the odd ill user that's the murderer. Properly stored and secured, it's something that you hope you never use. But if you must, that means you would have likely DIED without it. My dad has a rather enormous antique rifle and pistol collection. A total of six fully packed 1-ton gun safes, that you'd need a small army of people to haul off with or get into. If the U.S. is ever invaded, it would be nice if every household was armed like my pops. The insurgents wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell.

In conclusion, I'd jump for joy in a world with no guns. BUT, no such world will ever exist in our lifetime. So, unless you just enjoy the feeling of being peaceable so much that you're content to live with your head in the sand and bunny rabbits and rainbows in your thoughts..... it's not a bad idea to have some heat locked up in a safe that you have the combination down to a 5-second science, should you need it. In my opinion...

Re: A WORD FOR NEW ORLEANS

Geez, I don't think US is in danger of being invaded anytime soon, that's for sure. That just makes me laugh. The world is much to integrated for such anachronistic conflicts among developed, industrialized nations.

Reminds me of an episode of The Simpsons:

Homer: You couldn't be more wrong, Lisa. If I didn't have this gun, the King of England could just walk in here any time he wants, and start shoving you around. [pushing Lisa] Do you want that? [pushing her harder] Huh? Do you?

Deterant/protection to/from home invaders is a better argument imo.

You lost my vote Bossnine! Oh wait, I'm not American, and I don't vote

Re: A WORD FOR NEW ORLEANS

You take me too literally. And never say "never". We said "never" regarding terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. That was stupid, now wasn't it?? With so many countries armed with nuclear weapons, there's always an ever-so-small chance of global anarchy. If that were ever to happen, that wouldn't be the time to get around to going gun shopping. Even the chance of a terrorist succeeding in triggering a dirty bomb here in the U.S. would create anarchy and internal threats over a wide area, and that's NOT very far-fetched at all. Sure, the chances are slim. But the people who say "that'll never happen to me" are the ones who smoke themselves to death, eat themselves into a heart attack, drink and drive into a tree, etc... Hell, those are the ones who got totally caught with their PANTS DOWN when Hurricane Katrina took aim at New Orleans and they didn't even have a day's worth of food and water, nor high-water power generation, in their evacuation center (the superdome)!!

Deduct drug related murders out of US crime statistics and the US has a lower murder rate than Canada.

The political issue of arms and the public in the US was originally more about Indians and the fear of a oppressive domestic regime taking over than another war with England.

During the Revolutionary war, more American civilians died than American soldiers, and most of those civilians killed
    were killed by Indians.

Now the Indians own most of the Casinos so its bankbooks rather than heads being scalped.

Nonetheless, a armed populace was considered just in a free
society. It was part of the checks and balances on a new federal government that was little trusted by the original states.
