    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

STRADALE great post ! the 3m stuff is the best thing that ever happened when it comes to car care ... period .

I was using this stuff 7 years ago when I had to put the stuff on myself and it was hell no one knew how to apply it and they sent you a kit . Now it is a no brainer if you want to keep your car's paint right .

Road construction is the killer if you like taking road trips ..... they put the gravel down and let the cars pack it . I use to cringe when I would be on a road trip and see road construction ahead , now it just means the film gets hammered not the paint . I even found a product that gets the scratches out of the 3M stuff and keeps it looking like new called Safe cut this stuff is just the best . I use it on the whole car before waxing and it is the key to a great detail , but what it does for the 3M stuff is miraculous .

Ultimate Shield installed mine. I think they are located in Brea, CA. They will go anywhere in the area and install at your home or office.

Talk to Sean Heiland 714-412-4851 (or 877-70CLEAR), www.newcarprotection.com.

They had a competitive price and did a real nice job. I didn't use the 3M film since there are others that more closely matched the gloss on my car. There are 3 major brands, 3M, Avery and mine (I forgot what it was called).

    Tahnk you.

Do you remember off hand what it ran and did you do 1/3 of the hood. I really couldn't see a line in the hood.

    Thanks again.

It was around $850 - $900. I did the 1/3 hood and the entire front end including covering all the lights. I also did the rear view mirrors. Depending on the angle, it can be hard to see. You can see it best looking from back to front where you can see a faint line across the hood and fenders. From front to back it is real hard to see. Where it covers the entire area (like the front bumper) you can't see it at all.

    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

Phil, if you don't me asking who put the 3M clear film for you? What kind of warranty did you get? On my Turbo, I had Clear Armor do it at the dealership, but wasn't too happy with it. I'm still flipping back and forth on whether to get it at the dealer. I really don't want to see crease-like lines, but at the same time I don't want to respray after a year. For those who didn't get the 3M film, does the 997's paint chip pretty easily? This forum's awesome!

Yes, good idea. If I was driving in a place that used rock salt on the roads I'd have it for sure too.( I lived there for 30 years of my life) Here it's pretty tame.

You already do have it. Porsche doesn't do a good job of hiding it either.

Forget about the chips in your front bumper and hood for a minute. Have a look with a flashlight at your paint behind each wheel. Doesn't matter where in the world you live you are blasting your paint everytime you drive. If it isn't already pitted eventually it will be.

Yup. That's what I meant by piece of mind. I don't care where you live you'll eventually be driving through some type of construction. When I used to drive through a spot where they've torn up the road and you can hear all the pebbles and gravel in your wheel wells & hitting your paint I used to cringe too. No big deal now.

There's not a doubt in my mind my Challenge Stradale is worth at least $5000 maybe $10,000 more as is then if it were chewed up by chips. A stronger valued market car is great but for me it's even more important to have a car that I can see is cherry. Aluminum Ferrari's have it even worse then Porsche's. The paint isn't as tough for whatever reason. It's especially easy to grind away at the paint behind each wheel. I also think it's part of the reason why my Ferrari dealer has allocated a F430 for me. It will be easy for him to sell my CS because he knows it's perfect.

    Thanks OCEAN.
I'm always looking for good car care products

If you can't get it maybe try doing it yourself. The bumper would probably be too hard but you might be able to do a decent job on the hood and behind the wheels. I've said the installer is everything but if you don't have one what are ya gonna do ? Depends how handy you are I guess. Just a thought trying to help.

    THANKS Stradale !!
I can try getting the 3M Film over here (won't be easy, for those things we still live in FLINTSTONE ERA ).
Maybe it's a Stupid Question, but can you ask your 3M Dealer for some guidelines for placement ??
I'm quite handy (good I say it myself ), but A COMPLETE NOVICE in THIS MATTER !!
    MANY THANKS in Advance

    Freak2,
I just spoke to my friend at Detailing Dynamics. I told him you were in Europe and didn't know where to get the film. He said to try this company in England.:
    http://www.armourfend.com/

If you don't get anywhere with Armourfend he said he would sell you 3M material and ship it to you but keep in mind he buys in bulk and then cuts each piece to the customers spec. The spec differs depending on how much you want to cover. Other installers use pre-cut kits for each model- this would probably be better if you are doing the install yourself because it would come with pre-cut pieces.

There is a how to video available in this site:
    http://www.automotivearticles.com/Clear_Bra_3M.shtml

If you cant get anywhere with Armourfend or maybe even contact 3M directly to find a distributor in your area then contact Eddie (I just spoke to him about you) at the below:
    http://www.detailingdynamics.com/

Phil also posted info on his installer.
    Sean Heiland 714-412-4851 (or 877-70CLEAR), www.newcarprotection.com.

Let me know if I can help more.

    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

THANK YOU VERY MUCH Stradale !!
I have contacted a local car shop, and they will TRY to get the film (bulk) not precut, they promised to give me an answer by next week. As soon as I get news from them I will let you know. If I can't get it here I will have to search abroad, like you said.
THANKS for talking to your detailer, REALLY APPRECIATE IT !!

    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

Is the 3M film the best or are the other films just as good. The installer I am thinking od using if I get the clear bra does not use 3M.

I heard from a 3M installer today that the 3M film is more difficult to install and thats why most installers don't use it.

    Any input will be appreciated.

    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

    Stradale,
    Thanks for a great post!
Did you get your cars done at Detailing Dynamics in Mineola and do you recommend them? I am getting a CS in 2 weeks (my first Porsche ) and would like to get the Clear Bra before anything happens to it (I am getting the car from a dealer in NJ). Did you get your car to them on a flatbed truck or did you drive it there?
    Thanks!
    Gerry

    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

He did have it done there - his cars are on the website....no matter what he did to get it there however, I suggest you flatbed it directly from the dealer you don't want any scratches or dings before you get the 3M film on...

    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

Thanks Al! That's very good advice. I will call the dealer tomorrow to get a more accurate delivery date so that I can start scheduling the flatbed and the work at Detailing Dynamics. As of last Friday, the car was waiting to get on a vessel for Baltimore. Btw, did you also use Detailing Dynamics to install the 3M film on your cars?

    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

No, in Westchester I would recommend going to AI Design (www.aidesign.com). There is a specialist in Manhattan as well that my dealership uses but I never bothered getting the information from them

    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

    Thank you Alfred!

    Re: 3 M Film Protection----

If you have this product on your car, when you go to wax it, do you just wax the 3M film as well? What's the maintenance on it?

Also, if it has to be removed to fix a dent or crack/chip that occurs despite it's use, how is that done and what are the issues in such a case?

You wax it the same as your car. As a matter of fact, they ask that you keep it waxed.

If it needed to be removed, it can easily be peeled off. After making the repair you could just have that section that was removed installed again with new material.

It is pretty tough stuff. I had a tool fall against the front of the car and I know that if it had hit unprotected paint there would have been a gash. With the film there wasn't any damage at all. It is much tougher than paint.
