    Changed my order.......

I called my dealer this afternoon to add a few more options to my 997S order, namely the power kit.

But the next thing I know, I've added a pair of turbos, all-wheel drive and another 130 ponies.....The bad news is I also added another 11 months to my delivery time....

Am I nuts for allowing my first Porsche to be at the top of the food chain?

    Re: Changed my order.......

    yes

I believe the (current) top is the CGT isn't it?
There will always be something 'better' or 'faster'.
Don't know what you drive at the moment, but do you NEED the turbo? Or are you just a compulsive shopper with a large pocket?

    Re: Changed my order.......

    FSU-997S,

You could try the cars which are available right now to see if they offer you enough performance and 'fun'. If not, then go for the 997TT.

Honestly, ask yourself what you really want and why you are buying this car and, if money is not a limiting factor, then just choose accordingly. If you ask 50 people here, you might just get 50 well-reasoned but different answers.

You know which toy is best for you. Just enjoy whatever you choose.

You could even buy a 997S and keep it until the 997TT comes out. There are plenty of ways to skin this cat!

    Re: Changed my order.......

    Hey FSU -

Congrats! I don't know if I could handle the extra wait time, but if you can spare the coin for the TT go for it! I emptied my wallet on the C2S, but not without double-checking every possibility to squeeze a few more $$ for the GT3... Just couldn't do it this time around

    Re: Changed my order.......

You'll get a boatload of opinions, but you know damn well this is how it'll play out for you:

If you've got the notion, and the resources, to make the stretch to the Twin Turbo, and you've actually been pondering this for awhile, then.... You know the answer. It's already sunk its claws into you. Go Turbo. Some people have the wallets to buy a 997S now, and then trade-up later. If you've only got the wallet for a single punch, then make it the best you can throw. I love my 997S, and I'll be jealous, there's no getting around that.

NEED the Turbo? What does that mean? Does anyone NEED a Turbo or even NEED a Porsche? Certainly you don't NEED it to sustain life or even to get to work. But you shouldn't be limited to what you NEED. You should be limited only by what you want and can afford. If my twins weren't in private school, I'd buy one!

    Re: Changed my order.......

Yes, that whole entire "I've got more horsepower than I can use" attitude is alien to me. These cars are pussy-cats when it comes to power.

The only time you can make a valid argument that you "can't use more power" is when the rear tires can't hold it to the ground in 3rd gear. If you're smoking the tires in 3rd, doing 70 or 80 mph, THEN, you've got a bit more power than you can use on a regular basis. Of course, with a Turbo Porsche, the sky's the limit because you've got AWD!!! I'll take 800 h.p. please, and believe me, on that last rural stretch leading to my neighborhood entrance, it'll get used DAILY!!

100%. If you're already thinking Turbo and can only get one then wait. As for the point that it's too much car for a first Porsche I think it's more a matter of maturity and responsibility then past experience. The Turbo will be well behaved as long as you are. Then just take your time to acquire the skills to use the power. It's not like a sport bike that will hurt you without warning. Matter of fact the all wheel drive may even be safer in some situations.

    Re: Changed my order.......

Well here is my story....I've always had the desire for as long as I can remember to have a serious sports car, just like in the commercial where the 10 year old gets the business card to call back in 10 years. My first car was 1981 Turbo Trans Am with a whopping 200HP....(somewhat cool at the time and for a 16 year old) and since then I've had everything from Hondas and Acuras to Bimmers. I traded my 2002 BMW 540 6-speed in for an Lexus GX470 partly because I resented not getitng the M5, and the wife wanted a new car. I've currently set myself up with a Tundra Doublecab as my daily driver in preparation for the new "Toy."

Three years ago I was was set to purchase a 1998S, only because I could not afford the 1997 Turbo at the time. I loved the outside of the 993, inside was ok, didn't like the outside of the 996, but liked the inside. Anyways, my plans were delayed. Last year the choice was a used 2002 Turbo, or a new 997S, I drove both and finally chose the 997S.

Over the past year as I debated which options I'd order...my financial situation improved to put me in the Turbo catagory. So here I am.....

    Re: Changed my order.......

    thats very nice!!!!!!!

FSU-997S, if you got the money GET THE TURBO. There isnt really anything more to say about this "dilemma".

    Because there isnt any dilemma!!!!

I hope you get your car ASAP, and enjoy it to the maximum!!

I agree totally with 69' he is always talking to the core without unecessary explanations

    Re: Changed my order.......

    Turbo....

    Re: Changed my order.......

I'd do it... who cares anyway it's your car.

There is nothing wrong about shopping from the top shelf first...

    Re: Changed my order.......

Stradale has the right idea, if you behave the Turbo will behave. I'd like it just to pass slow smelly cars on two lane rural highways with minumal passing zone-age. Massive power would be a great application for this problem. Not sure what you're going to use it for though.

Also, face it, we all have cars which really make sense only for Autobahn use. We're all totally over-equipped for USA roads. So, getting the TT is not a big deal, with regard to overstatement, compared to the normal-lunged ones.

I'd get the darn thing if you have the penchant.

The only thing I don't like about your plan is the HUGE wait you're in for.

    Re: Changed my order.......

    FSU,

It's gotta be the turbo. If you think you might be nuts, I couldn't wait for the 997TT myself, but when I tested the 997C2 and C2S along with the 996TSCab at my local dealer, it was night-and-day, the NA 997's were simply relatively underpowered. My first experience in the 996TSCab in 2nd gear between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm's with the K24's spooling up as the back of my head bounced off the headrest and I quickly came upon the car in front of me clinched the deal for me-turbo now! So I picked up the 996TSCab and jumped on the dealer's wait list for the 997TS. Your only problem is having to wait until next summer. I'm sure there are a few remaining 996TT's at Florida dealers-try Naples on the gulf coast or Champion Porsche on the ocean side-you might be able to work a deal for a used 996TT to tide you over for the next year.
