    RPM question

I have a 996, but figured the 997 board gets more traffic

Which is better for your engine....hanging around 4000-4300RPM in 3rd, or going into 4th, but hanging around the low 3000RPMs? Or same situation...hanging around the low 4000RPM in 4th, or the lower 3000's in 5th?
    Thanks....

    Re: RPM question

it really doesnt matter, as long as you don't apply too much throttle below 2000 RPM.

its ok to cruise in rush hour traffic at that speed, but don't try to accelerate hard.

the only thing that will really damage the engine is lugging it, or missing a shift and physically forcing it to a higher than redline RPM.

    Re: RPM question

For my first 2000 miles, I shift to the next gear and hang around 3k rpms, so that I have some to play with the pedal. I'm already on the verge of hitting up to 5k rpm if I just rev the engine anymore than I already have if around 4k.

I'd rather stick to the tips as best I can for the first 2k miles. I've already got 400 miles on it in the first week of having my 997S.

And I agree with Moogle too, in not lugging the engine. If I'm slowing down to below 2k rpm, I'll downshift. In SoCal morning rush hour, I gotta deal with this every weekday.

    Good luck!

    Re: RPM question

why is pressing the gas hard below 200 rpm is bad for the engine? Could someone please explain??

I ve heard it before,so i dont do it, but never actually got a mechanic explanation for it

Hmmm, the owner's manual says 1,500 doesn't it?

    Re: RPM question

Another good technique when "running in" an engine is not to run the same RPM on the highway for extended periods, but to vary the RPM.....

This sounds odd. Does anyone know the logic behind this?

Varying the RPMs while varying the gear selection (most important) is good for breaking in the gearbox. Since the gearbox needs to be broken in, it's not helpful if you just cruise down the freeway for hours while only in 5th gear at 4000rpm.

    Re: RPM question

The explanation I've heard is that when rings and cylinders are being bedded in during the first 500-1000 miles of operation, running at a constant RPM for extended periods of time effects the uniformity/consistency of the bedding in of the rings against the cylinder walls and they may not seal as well, though I'm sure it's all relative.

    Re: RPM question

O.K. Maybe the transmission but 90% of life in 5th or 6th anyway. 2% in first. Still seems a little odd.

Also, I could see valves or throttle stuff getting an initial "indexing" due to constant positioning but don't engines broken in on a stand run at constant rpm?

Wouldn't you intentionally break in an airplane engine w/ constant revs?

    Re: RPM question

In the end does it really matter? 3000 RPM or 5000 RPM, 2nd gear or 3rd gear, hit redline or not? Might as well go in only reverse the first 4000 km not to wear and tear on the other gears Think about all those demo cars out there. Not broken in, driven like mad by potential byers, then sold at market price by the Porsche dealer without any significant discount and with warranty. Would such a car be worse off than a "properly" broken in car. I doubt it.

6th gear? Very rearely used. This is a sports car - drive it within the torque band. I only use 6th on long distance road trips - and rarely. Just my thoughts anyway - I do not see a 911 as a regular econobox - shift up to get from A to Z. It is a fun go-cart, needing constant attention and shifting.

    Re: RPM question

Agree. None of my test drives saw 6th... 5th only for the hell of it.
