Re: Why Ferrari Dealearships are D**ks?

Buying a new Ferrari sounds like too much hassle for ordinary folk like us - life is too short for nonsense like this!

Sounds like "choose your poison" to me.....suck up to a F salesguy/buy a stinking used car, etc...all to get a new F@MSRP at some indeterminate time vs writing a "defined-value" check today to a broker to get the next build spot on a 430 or a new 430 on-the ground......gotta calc value of time/effort/indignity of sucking up for a nominally MSRP F...and value of having one's new toy now/N6M rather than ?1-3 yrs from now

IMO you're better of starting a relationship with a dealer. Of course it will take more time to get a car but for the long term once you establish a good relationship with a dealer you're golden. Rotate into a new car at msrp every summer and cost you nothing, even make money doing it. If you're only interested in buying a 430, don't care about paying a huge premium and never plan on selling the car for a new model (yeah right) then buy from a broker. Long term it's not smart. It might take years to establish the relationship with the dealer where you would be on his good customer list but the perks is well worth the time.. IMO the only "poison" is paying $50,000 over each and every time you want a new car. You think the broker is giving you a better price next time around because you're a good customer ? Don't think so. He'll sell the car for as much as he could possibly get. It may work for some but I'm glad I didn't do that a couple of years ago. I'd be in the same boat all over again. Better to start a business relationship now and in a couple of years be ordering your new car every summer/every other summer at msrp instead of chasing the 2nd best deal again.

Strad, I'm w/you if one has a reasonable F dealer w/which to build relationship...but not all F dealers are created equal....

Know several financially astute guys who only use brokers to get their cars b/c of incompetent dealers and/or their impatience w/process of trying to leapfrog the deep, serial F buyer lists in places like SF and Greenwich......gotta choose one's battles...

Amazing what some guys will do to own a Ferrari.
The more guys around that get bent over by a broker the better and quicker it is for everyone else. The more they pay over msrp and spike the market the more I get for my cars bought at msrp. Sounds okay to me. It's not what I would wish on a friend though.

Have you owned any Ferrari's or plan to ?

Stradale I object to you educating short sighted, instant gratification car people.

FWIW, my last three Ferrari's did not cost me one nickel and I drove them several thousands of miles. I always sold them at a profit(even after commission) through the dealer and never had to wait more than several months for my new Ferrari. Lastly, I have never given the dealer a deposit when ordering my new Ferrari.

That is why it is so important to have an excellent relationship with a reputable Ferrari dealer.

LOL!! I guess you're right, maybe I'll just

Yup ! They're even MORE FUN (believe it or not)when you can make money owning them.

For the first car I had to leave a deposit for my next one I didn't.

If you're currently in the loop then you are absolutely correct. However, if you're not my guess is it will cost you a lot more to do so. When you look at them trying to sell you something first(575 etc.) and taking a hit on it, plus they now try to lock you in with as much as a 15% consignment fee when you sell.(FoOC is trying to get this) Tax and registration etc. Let's call it $100 - 150K in various costs to get a 430 very soon. VS if you just wait it out say a year you'll probably be able to pick one up in the secondary market for $10 - 15K over, plus you get one sooner then you would if you just left a deposit and waited indefinately. There are a lot of variables here but IMO if you're not currently in the loop, it's cheaper to wait for the right deal to come along.

Aren't 430's relatively easy to procure in Euro, and have relatively unremarkable/weak resale value....sort of like P's in US?

If F would ship 60%+ of production to US and/or raise MSRP on 430Coupe to $250K, prob would both tighten up the Euro F mkt and cool off the US mkt, allowing F to capture above-MSRP profits now going to dealers/brokers....perhaps F is afraid to test how deep US demand would be in context of unremarkable speculative/resale value?.....

It's not easy to get an F430 in the UK for list price within 3 years - if I could I would be saving my pennies for one instead of even considering a Porsche.

Btw Stradale - by "ordinary folk" I meant those who are not already on Ferrari's preferred list of customers...!

Can anyone recommend a *decent* dealer in the UK please? Thanks

Sorry, forgot about UK's RHD supply issues... What about getting a LHD 430 off the Continent? In fact, what about idea of renting/buying a house in suburban Munich to keep a 430....perhaps a great base of operations for driving-intensive wkend/holiday runs on autobahn and through the mtns?
