    From 996 TT to 997 S

I am thinking of changing my 02 996 TT into a 05 997 S. Do you think it is a good or a stupid idea? I understand that 997 S is a bit better in handling but 996 TT is much better in power and is 4-wheel drive (I don't track the car) which I like very much. Will the rear wheel drive 997 be difficult to handle (particularly in the rain)?

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

I have done exactly what you are considering; traded-in my '01 996TT on an '06 997S. I find that the 997S is much nicer to drive than the 996TT although it has less power. I too live in a wet climate but find that the limits of adhesion are so high in the 997S that, even in the wet, I don't miss the AWD at all. I suggest that you test drive a 997S and you'll see what I mean.

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

I've never driving the 996tt before. But compared to my previous 996, this 997s is just an exhilirating experience everytime I take it for a spin.

If you like styling of the 997s, and can live with the minor downgrade in power, get the 997 c4s. It has the awd you like, and if you order the power kit, it will be comparable to your turbo.

Or if you have the patience to wait a few years, the 997 turbo should be here by then.

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

Why not wait for the 997TT? It should be here next summer, according to the rumours.

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

I wish I could afford the 997 TT. Unfortunately I don't. I am just a little worry about whether I would like a rear wheel drive Carrera. The 996 TT is a fantastic car and it seems that a lot of the 997 S owners believe that the 997 S can (to a certain extent) match the power of a 996 TT.

I've Never driven the 996 Turbo as well, but the 997 is a much better car dynamically. I've driven a 996 Carrera and 997 CarreraS back to back so I can say from experience that the 997's a much better car.
    Hope this helps.

I don't think the 997 s will ever match the 997T as far as power is involved. The Engine of the Cs might be more elastic and pull stronger from lower rpm, but I dont think it will be anywhere near the 996T as far as power is involved.
(Again i've never driven the 996T so i'm using my own opinion)

If anyone else who has had that experience can help out more??

I did have also a 996 tt (04/2003). I sold it and in two month I will get my C4S with X51. I have test driven the 997 alot. I think that the 997 S has about 95% of the 996 tt performance. The 997 S will be as fast as a 996 tt on a track, even faster. The only thing which is missing is the turbo bump. But I never liked the turbo bump. I took the C4S because it looks better and I live in the hills. The X51 is just to compensate the lost power of C4S compared to C2S. A C4S with X51 is even faster then a C2S without X51. For us amateurs with a C4S we are faster then with a C2S.

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

This is exactly what I am worry about with a 997 C2S because I am no pro at all. I wish I can get the 997 C4S (with or without the X51) but it is just a bit too expensive for me.

    996 C4S to 997 S

I live in one of those parts of the world where snow and ice are a given. Nevertheless I traded by 996 C4s for a 997 C2S. the handling of the C2S is so much more fun than the C4S which understeered like a truffle hunting pig.

My suggestion would be to try both a C2S and a C4S and see which you enjoy the most: then buy.

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

I also had a 2002 996 Turbo. I drove it everyday for 3 years and traded it for a 997 S cab this past May. I don't think I would have traded it for a 997 S coupe. My decision to trade was based more on the fact I wanted a 911 convertible. I plan to get the Turbo cab when it comes out. If you cant afford the 997 Turbo now then if I were you maybe I'd wait until I could afford it. In terms of power I know the 997 S peformance numbers appear very close, sometimes even beating the Turbo's but the Turbo feels faster. The 997 feels more linear in it's acceleration while the Turbo gives you that pull when the Turbo's spool up. The Turbo will give you some added performance comfort in the rain but the 997 definately grips harder then the 996 C2. When I get a new car I always like to take it IN THE RAIN to a huge open parking lot by my house. I experiment to get a good feeling for the cars wet traction and grip before being surprised on the road. The 997's wet traction and grip is remarkable............... I don't know your financial details with your Turbo - if you bought it new and only have 2 years on a bank note etc. If that were the case I'd wait and pay it off and then it would be easier to afford the 997 Turbo. Also you'd be going from a soft market car (996 Turbo) to a tight market car (997 S). Dunno. If you asked this question 6 months ago I may have leaned towards the 997 S but it isn't a total upgrade, you're losing a couple of big things and the new Turbo is coming. Maybe I'd consider getting more creative financially (maybe doing a longer term finance/ lease for less $$ etc. ) in order to get in a car that will be a upgrade in all areas from what you have now and by changing you would be REALLY happy and wouldn't have your eye on something else in 6 months.

    Re: 996 C4S to 997 S

Please...do not compare anymore the 996 C4S ( yes , fat pig) with the 997 C4S. They have NOTHING in commun and the understeer is hardly noticable now!

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

Just curious - Why would you change the name of somebodys thread to your own situation ? Not only does it make things confusing but it's not very polite imo. I could be wrong.

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

I traded a 04 Turbo Cab for an 05 C2S, and I am very happy with the C2S in comparison. I liked the Turbo Cab and actually had meant to keep it longer, but the 05 C2S came sooner than I expected. It is the first Porsche I have ever ordered new.

The Turbo is very nice to drive, but I think the C2S is even better. Maybe it is more balanced. The 997 steering seems quicker to me and I got the ceramic brakes. I think it stops better, but I have no proof.

I traded the CAB for a Coupe because the Cab was too loud in Houston traffic.

Definetely the Turbo is more of kick when you floor it, but otherwise, I think the C2S is more balanced.

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

Both cars are great! The 997s has so much grip in the dry and wet, AWD is probably not necessary. Also, turn-in is lighter and more precise than the 996TT. The power is less in the 997s but the power delivery in the 997s is amazing. I also recommend you go for the sports exhaust from Porsche too for the 997s.

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

I did it and I love it why wouldn't you and don't worry it will drive well in the wet . If you need more power go for the X51 .

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

I have driven both. I own a 2002 TTX50 with upgraded suspension, so maybe it is not a fair comparison. But the TT is in some other league than the 997S. It is like driving a jet-powered car that handles well.

    Re: From 996 TT to 997 S

Guys, thanks for your input. I think I am more inclined to keeping the 996TT than to change it to the 997S (since I am no pro, the 4 wheel drive system is definitely an important factor).
