    Intro/Rumination/Euro Delivery on C4S Question...

After having lurked here and over at rennlist.com for a few weeks, I wanted to make an official intro and ask a question, to boot. I really appreciate everyone's knowledge, and hope I can give some valuable input.

My wife and I were driving around Mill Valley, CA today, on our way to Sonnen Porsche so that I could ponder the future existence of a 997 C4S in our garage, when suddenly a silver on red Mercedes SLR/McLaren appeared cruising around the city center! Of course I was amazed at its lines, and the lovely sound emanating from the twin-pipes tucked behind the front wheel well... Why is this relevant...? Because after explaining the price of the SLR to my wife, it made shopping for the 911 soooo much easier for her to stomach (we just had our first baby, so she's more concerned with strollers than PASM or Sport Chrono-speak). She didn't like the up-charge on the Slate Grey paint, though... BTW, they had three C-GTs on the lot; one was ready to be picked up, two in for service.

Question: I discussed the possibility of a European Delivery option for a C4S with the salesman. I understand I don't actually save anything on the car's price as compared to the U.S. price (another $3k!). However, he suggested it would take longer for the car to be made? Something about the dealer's monthly allotment-explanation? Has anyone else had any experience with Euro Delivery? Do you pick the delivery date and work back from there? I already did a search and did not find much info on it.

Thanks. Almost a waiter. Sorry for the long post. jmr

Re: Intro/Rumination/Euro Delivery on C4S Question...

Welcome to the board! I too have been lurking on Rennteam, but for almost nine months now and have found the exchanges and pictures extremely helpful. I also will be arranging European Delivery and once I convinced my dealer that I was serious (they all want to dissuade you at first because of the "hassle") we have mapped out a course of action.

Every month my dealer is given future allotments for build dates then U.S. delivery dates. So for example in July he was told that he will have 3 builds in October for delivery in January, 2 builds in November for delivery in February and 4 builds in December for delivery in March. As far as European Delivery is concerned you would, upon making your deposit and selecting your options, receive one of the builds. However for pick up in Germany the delivery date could be shortened to a month. So, if you got one of the October builds you could take European Delivery in November.

The big wait comes when you drop it off at the factory for delivery to the U.S. The delivery to your U.S. dealer could take between 60 and 80 days.

Anyway this is what I have gleaned from talking to my dealer and reading posts of the few others that have shared their experience online. I plan to make a deposit this fall for an April European Delivery. Here are the links to a few other posts concerning European Delivery. Cheers!

sato, thanks for the info. I hope your ED goes well, keep us posted. I won't make a decision until Jan/Feb for a May delivery.

    Cheers, jmr

It does not take that long after you drop the car off it is more like 30 - 45 days max . I have done it twice and the experience is priceless if you take some time
and really do a long road trip over there .

    sato great links !

    jmr,

    Welcome aboard,

Besides price, I will give you two more good reasons to prefer the 997 C4S over the McMerc:
    1. No manual tranny on the McMerc; and
    2. Back seat in the 997 C4S for when your new bundle of joy is old/big enough to legally/safely sit back there.

Re: Intro/Rumination/Euro Delivery on C4S Question...

    Al, thanks for the tips...

We are trying to plan a Euro pick up next year when our daughter turns 1... My wife loved the fact that Porsche has the LATCH system for the kid's seats, and even Porsche kid's seats themselves... Front or back seat, the little one will learn to love Porsche from a young age, just like her Dad...

Oh, and I'm definitely getting a manual, until the Panamera comes out, hopefully with DSG; that and four doors, it'll be the perfect family Porsche (unless you like SUVs ).

    Cheers, Jeff
