HELP: Valentine: What to Order and Which Install Is Better

2 weeks after driving my first P car, I have now realied I had better get a radar detector.

It seems from the Valentine web site, the radar does come with the hardwire kit and therefore I don't need to buy separate kit. Could someone confirm this please?

I have a done a search and found a couple threads. In one thread, the person taps the light panel on top

The other method is to run the wire down the fuse panel.

Has anyone done either method recently? Anything to watch out for? Is there a more definitive site with better pictures of installation than the URL I pointed to above? If you have pictures of install, could you please post yours?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: HELP: Valentine: What to Order and Which Install Is Better

I recently installed my V1 per the instructions for tapping into the interior light power in the roof above the rear view mirror. Easily done. Works perfectly because it automatically powers the V1 when you open the door and keeps power on until you turn off the key and exit the vehicle. The V1 web site has everything you need for installation.

Re: HELP: Valentine: What to Order and Which Install Is Bet

This roof installation appears a little scary to me but seems to be "cleaner" than running wire to the fuse box. I didn't know this info is at Valentine web site. Let me look.

Does this mean I have to buy the 3 inch straight power cord (as opposed to the 8 foot straight power cord that comes with the radar)? Thanks.

Also, any pictures of when you opened the ceiling's power source?

Thank you Cannga.... I've also searched this site, renntech and rennlist as well as Google - and haven't found an adequate DIY for V1 installation in a 997 (with pics). There are quite a few with 996 installs, but none that wire to fuse box with explicit instructions. The 996 installs hook into some wires under the carpet on the drivers side apparently.
I think wiring it to the fuse box would be great, but not clear on exactly how to do it, and what to order.
I hope someone can help us...

    vtach,
You are welcome. What do you think about the ceiling light idea though? Doesn't it seem cleaner? (Very short wire.) The idea of opening that area *is* a little scary.

Re: HELP: Valentine: What to Order and Which Install Is Bet

Piece of cake. Tap the roof panel light. Nothing to it. Everything snaps together. Screws are rare these days. Gotta know the solution to the un-snapping puzzle though. Otherwise it is a teeny bit intimidating.

BTW, you DO know about the 12vdc socket in the passengers footwell?

It's another place to tap into. Run the wire past the sunvisors and then down and just inside the rubber trim next to the roof post near the window. Then under the glove box to socket which probably pops out.

The important thing is to secure the wire every few inches (where it's not gonna get hooked by passengers feet or their gear.

Re: HELP: Valentine: What to Order and Which Install Is Bet

The three inch power cord was too short for me. I had to use the long one and coil the wire above the headlilner.
