During the debut yesterday in Singapore, Porsche stressed that Southeast Asis is the largest market for the Macan and that the owners are 1) mostly new to the brand, 2) younger, and 3) mostly female.
Coincidentally, this just popped up on my local Porsche dealership's Instagram today, nailed all three points

China’s auto market is roughly equivalent to the EU and the United States markets combined! That’s why so many products are being designed for the vagaries of the Chinese market. However, the Chinese auto makers are moving into EVs massively with BYD taking over the number one EV maker position from Tesla. The amount of new product entering the EU is staggering. Just take a look at the number for Chinese EVs are being reviewed weekly by the European auto publications. I don’t know how many of the traditional automakers will survive the onslaught.

In the Chinese market, Tesla isn't considered as a luxury brand, like Porsche Mercedes BMW and such. They are there to compete against the BYDs and NIOs. Basically mass market stuff, but more expensive. Their quality simple isn't up to par with the Germans.
Porsche's place in the Chinese market is very safe, like Mercedes and BMW. Tesla's not so much. The well off class won't be caught being seen in a Tesla.

SAIC has a long partnership with VAG since the 1980s, so there is nothing wrong with them partnering up with a VAG brand to make cars for the Chinese market.
Foreign corporations cannot have a controlling interest in a Chinese company, so they all have to partner up with a local company, hence why SAIC also have a partnership with GM for the Chinese market.

In typical Porsche speak they warn the allocations for the the new Macan are limited in 2024 because of production limitations but will increase in 2025.So hurry and order your's NOW!

The only new Volkswagen Group product launched recently that I find interesting is the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 8.5. Imagine 261 bhp in a Golf! Too bad the manual was shifted to the great graveyard of automobile technology.
You can get the Golf R (Mk8) for 43k EUR...new. A lease company in Munich has a few left they want to get rid of. New cars, 333 hp performance version and with AWD. Amazing offer.

Am I the only one who does not like it ? It looks as generic as it can be. And it’s too heavy (what’s the need for a 100kw battery as most will use it to commute and go shopping). And the price is nuts. I’m getting less and less interested in these new cars. The old macan looks better.

Agree, I find it insipid and uninteresting and this is why I posted about finding the updated Volkswagen Golf GTI more interesting. I’m sure that the driving dynamics are worthy of the Porsche badge but the bloated, appliance-like profile is a major letdown. However, I’m sure that this market driven product will do well within its target demographics. I still remain concerned that the new 718 replacement EVs will lack the emotion inducing attributes of the current cars.

All due to the general public's ignorance of how much range they need. They all think EV needs to go as far as that one extra long road trip that they will never take.
Another reason would be they got trained by how Tesla people need to baby their battery (Teslas don't have a top buffer nor a bottom buffer), so they can only charge to 80% and used it down to 20%, so basically taking a 40% cut on the total range. Something that's not needed on more advanced EVs like Porsche's as they already designed in a top and bottom buffer, so full isn't actually full and empty isn't actually empty.

The almost meaningless comparisons begin between the Macan and Tesla Model Y: https://insideevs.com/features/706488/macan-ev-model-y-comparison/ Only issue that seems relevant is vehicle weight. Whilst the Porsche has many features including rear wheel steering, not found on the Tesla, the weight delta is quite large.

my guess is almost no one will act based on a comparison between the two cars. Both the Tesla and the Porsche have very district markets, and are very different cars. The comparisons amount to no more than people bragging about whatever choice they think they want.

The thing is: You can get a decently optioned Hyundai Ioniq 5 N for 80k EUR here in Germany and a decently optioned Macan Turbo would be around 134k EUR. Performance is comparable and the Hyundai should provide more driving fun since it has all those (admittely fake) ICE driving "simulation" options.
Would the Macan Turbo be 200 kg lighter, then it would be worth it in my opinion. Still...Porsche will sell the Macan EV because for many who want an EV, the Macan will be a luxury alternative to a Tesla or whatever.
