    Anyone else having this problem?

    Hi everyone,

I've had this happen three times now...

Sometimes when I start my car I get three error messages: PSM failure, ABS failure, Airbag system fault. The car drives and functions normally, but the ABS, PSM and Airbag lights all come on. After I park the car for an hour or so and restart it, the lights have gone away, except for the airbag light, which apparently stays on to force it to be checked by the dealer.

The first time my dealer parsed the computer, found no trouble codes and reset it. The second time a few trouble codes were set that led to PCNA replacing the airbag control module and checking the grounding wires in the car. Things were perfect for about a month, but this morning the same problem. So it will go back to the dealer in the AM, but has anyone else had a similar problem?

I can give more info if you think it will help.

    Thanks,

    mcdelaug

Re: Anyone else having this problem?

Had the same problem, and we had a thread about this some months ago.
It seems to be a faulty electronics system.

I had it happen to me twice in exactly the same spot. Meaning same town, same stoplight, same error.

Had it checked but no problems at all and all systems work well.
It's your own personal Phantom of the Opera I guess.
If youre running on warranty I suggest you WRITE Porsche a complaint and ask for a FULL checkup and fix.

Re: Anyone else having this problem?

I had a similar problem some years ago with the ABS system in my Saab - would show the warning light on startup but only in one particular location. Had the control module changed but it still failed in this location - turned out a new cell phone mast had been installed on a nearby building and it was upsetting the ABS module.

Any new cell phone towers nearby - or new antennas hanging off an existing tower?

Re: Anyone else having this problem?

Interesting, but no, and it's happened in two different locations over 100 miles apart. Unless it's my cell phone that's doing it...

It seems to happen when it is "less hot" outside-once after a rain, and two other times about 6AM. The dealer was on the PCNA tech line all day yesterday, so far no news...we'll see I suppose.

Re: Anyone else having this problem?

Well, an interesting turn of events today.

My dealer's techs couldn't diagnose the problem, even with their Porsche diagnostic equipment. So they connected the car's central computer to some engineers at PCNA (via VPN I suppose) and interrogated it remotely. It turns out that some software modules were not installed in the car's CPU during manufacture. In effect although a a bare bones OS was present, not all the "drivers" for some of the different modules had beel loaded. So whenever certain situations were created (maybe a combination of PSM activation and recent seatbelt fastening or something) the computer would try to refer to a subroutine or other software module that wasn't present and "crash" thus setting the various trouble codes. The car is being correctly reprogrammed today and I should have it back Monday. My experience should dispell any myths about the cars in Stuttgart being of better quality than those being built by Valmet, since I have a Stuttgart 987S. I've never believed there was a difference anyway, but I have heard some people prefer one over the other...go figure.

I returned the floaty suspension Jaguar loaner they gave me today for one of their demo 987Ses to drive this weekend. And Monday I'm taking my service advisor to lunch for barbecue so I can get the full story (and of course to show my appreciation for doing the job correctly!).

Anyway, I wonder if Porsche can track who was responsible for coding my car's CPU and will reprogram them too?
Dr Phil and Charles L, thanks for your input; I'm writing this primarily so you'll know what was ultimately discovered, since you were willing to spend some of your time helping me out!
