    Minor Paintwork chips

Im sure this has been covered before (couldnt find any threads using search)...but Im sure we have all had a few minor paint chips and "road rash" on the leading edge paintwork of our cars. When parking this morning I noticed a really annoying chip on one of the rear wheel arches which is at an odd angle and gone quite deep. Must have picked it up driving to work this morning as it wasnt there last night and is definately a stone chip given the odd angle.

Anyone have any advice or suggestions around addressing these types of chips? Ive seen "paint pens" advertised which at least stop the chip standing out, but have never used one myself. Seems crazy to have the car go to the shop just for a tiny chip, problem is on a black car it stands out given its on the side of the car and looks white (hasnt gone all the way to the metal I guess).

    Any and all suggestions appreciated.

    Re: Minor Paintwork chips

I agree my 997s has picked up a few stone chips on the front bumper after only 4k miles .Maybe its because the bumpers are too soft as they are plastic.Even seem to have a few chips on my front alloys too.I touched my bumper in with a seal grey touch up pencil

    Re: Minor Paintwork chips

I just touch up with a tooth pic dabbed in paint. Use the flatter tooth pics as they hold a little more paint. It's the cheapest and easiest fix and at least your eye doesn't get drawn to it.

    Re: Minor Paintwork chips

Get 3M installed behind each wheel. It stops these chips from happening. It stops the impossible to avoid (without 3M) sand and pebble blasting of your paint behind each wheel.

    Re: Minor Paintwork chips

3000 miles and not one chip and my commute takes me from the Long Island Ex through Queens, through the Bronx and into Westchester. Without 3M my front bumper would be trashed.

    Re: Minor Paintwork chips

Also live on Long Island and travel the Long Island Ex. through Queens and was thinking about getting 3M in the front. Any suggestions or recommendations on where to get it done?

    Re: Minor Paintwork chips

Depending on the color or your car, I have sucessfully used Langka (the blob remover) to touch up my cars and make the dings almost disappear. For solid colors it works well, for metallics nothing works real well. To use the Langka method you use your touch up paint on the ding and when almost dry you rub Langka over it to smooth out the touch up paint blob. On a white car I actually had dings all but disappear. It it sure a better way of doing it than touching up and trying to sand the blob away. The problem with some metallic colors is that you can't get the paint to match, so removing the blob is the least of your worries. I tried touch up paint and Langka on my artic silver car and it didn't work worth a darn. That is why I installed the clear bra.

You can check out Langka at: http://www.langka.com/index.cfm?page=products.cfm&cat=78

    Re: Minor Paintwork chips

Thanks for the suggestions. I have thought about the clear 3M thing, but decided against it after seeing another black 997 at a dealership and I thought the lines stood out too much. The chips I saw on mine this morning would have been there regardless of whether 3M was fitted, probably one of those very rare angles but its done now. Ill try one of those touch up pens this weekend.

Good things I have a 997S cab due in December

I had the same thought about installing a clear bra (3m?) on my black paint but after 200 miles I has two small paint chips. As you said they really stand out on a black car. I had the clear bra installed. Yes, I can see the lines but better to look at the lines, know the paint is protected, than to look at a bunch of paint chips.

The paint on newer Porsches ain't what is use to be. I think it might have to do with the new enviromentally sound paint formulas. The older Porsches I have had seemed less susceptable to chipping. I recommend the clear bra for your sanity, especially on a black car.
