ISUK , Pounds63,000 good and I just quickly checked the options and you dont need to pack none on so that 62 gee could easily be the final figure , my 997S is up to 74 gee ..

Hang on best to keep this away from her indoors she loves Beamers .

i was talking about from a 70mph roll on, in acceleration the m5 and the c2s will be similar, but on top speeds the M5 pulls away from the C2s quite easily

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

got it, makes sense much more engine and torque, you are comparing a 6 vs a V10 tough to beat 500hp and 4 more cylinders

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

We are out gunned! Doesn't Porsche know there is a serious horsepower war on. Just look at all the power rating. New vette 400HP, ZO6 500HP, Audi RS6 450HP, RS4 440HP,M5 500HP, F430 483HP, Gallardo 500 HP, Viper 500 HP, numerous AMG Merc's are over 355HP. Even the Cadillac CTS has more power at 400HP.And there are even more powerful cars coming, including 400-500 HP cars from Japan. And this doesn't tell the whole story. The 997 compares even worst in the torque ratings.

Yes the car is fast and has way more power than you can use 90% of the time. But I would like another 50 horses/ foot pounds for the 10% of the time I can use it. Not to mention track events.

I was very happy with the power out put initially but now that I am getting use to it, a little more would be nice. Although I do appreciate the liner power curve, comes on at a very steady rate.

What is Porsche's market strategy relative to power? The 996 came out with 300 HP. A generation later the base car has only 20 more HP, the same as the out going 996's. Sure you can get it up to 381 HP by plucking down an extra $24 grand, or $97,400 without other options. Are they going to increase the 997's power during it's life-cycle? How will they do that without seriously eroding resale value of the cars that customers paid extra for to get more horse power. They should have just skipped the 3.6 motor and put the 3.8 in the standard car with the 'S' getting the X51. We may have all had to pay a little more but with the base car up in power they could have charged more. But I guess the bean counters did their sales forecast at certain price points and felt there was a greater market at a lower price point. Sometimes I forget it is a business.

Gary good points but C&D just had a review of the new RS4 at 450 HP and it barely beat the current M3 platform. The 450 saloon does not best the 997S out of the gate which goes to show it's not all HP. Sure Subaru can and will produce a 400hp WRX but it's sheet metal, an engine, rubber and will not track the same nor get the same looks as your P-car.

Agree on the points that the base 997 should have had a step up on HP, but it comes down to all the parts working together not just the engine. Here is where Porsche bests all.

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

Only one way to go - RUF.

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

Just by coincidence, I had an M5 for a few hours today and have an option on a September build cancelled order to replace my 2004 530d. The M5 sure is quick and capable but just doesn't have that excitement or driving pleasure that my 997S has. And while the 3.8 has a good amount of torque from 3000rpm, the M5 doesn't have the same "go in any gear" feeling. When I want to have fun, I'll drive the 997, when I need more space, I think I'll keep the 530d, at least until they facelift it and there's more difference betn my heavily optioned 530d and the M5.

    PS

OT but FWIW My BMW dealer has secured 300 otherwise unobtainable tickets for its customers to Pavarottis final concert in Auckland, including a sit down supper with the man himself, and at a price 2/3 of the normal price without the supper!! How's that for added value!! My Porsche dealer doesn't even come close!!

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

Gary No Cal , these were my exact thoughts when I said goodnight to this thread last night . Porsche is falling way behind on the HP stats and feel in the next 5yrs reputation wont be enough to override it . On my demo I did feel the need for more roll on power and for the overall price of this vehicle we should be looking at at least 400 ponies imo..

Leong , I think its the ease in which it achieves speed and you cannot argue with that M5 / F430 Autocar test in which included straight line and around the bends testing , its quite amazing its the first time I have read it and I would never have believed it .

Porsche give us more HP for our money ..

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

Guys, one thing you have to remember. The Germans have a long history of understating their hp/performance figures. I even recall MB being forced to change their hp figures on the 55K when it came out on the SL form 476 to 495 (or something like that). So I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the V10M engine is around 530hp while the 65AMG is closer to 650hp.

For everyones information , waiting list over here on M5 is 18 months and some places 2 yrs..I would not of thought that..

I'm still a BMW fan in case you got the wrong impression in my last post, this reaffirms my position

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

But we need to come to terms with the fact that a mother , talking on her cell, with her two children sitting in the back watching Herbie on the DVD sceen,, a jack russel looking out of the front window, groceries is the trunk of the M5 might flash her lights at us, so we moove over to the slow lane while we were just going full trottle, thinking what a great sports car we have...
What a strange world.... Hello Mr Porsche, wake up, please!

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

    Throt,

A friend of mine is a salesman for a BMW dealership. I didn't manage to get a go of their demo car but he said it was awesome. Apparently you don't get the sensation of speed that you would in a 997 due to the size, weight and soundproofing in the car but he says that the way it charges along the road is almost insane (for reference he used to sell Porsches for a living, back in the days of the 993). I stuck my name down for the next generation M3 which is due in early 2007 based upon the tantalising prospect of a V8 with over 400bhp. That should be a fun car. I think I'm number 3 on their delivery list.

I checked with him re your point about BMW GB holding the price and he said they definately will not hold it. Order now and delivery is currently being estimated for 2008 and you will have to pay any price increases between now and then. The reality on delivery is likely to be somewhat different though. He reckons that BMW will increase the UK's allocation next year and this, coupled with speculators dropping out of the waiting list as other new cars come along, will bring delivery times down.

    Leong,

I had a current model E60 530d up until 4 months ago and I cannot believe you would even mention it in the same breath as an M5. The 530d is a very quick car but even the 535d is noticeably faster still. The M5 would leave both of them standing. At around 1.6 times the price of a 535d Sport I'd say it is great value. Having said that, the M5's residuals will be poor if history is anything to go by - in the UK at least. Heck the M5 even gives you a button to change the output from 400bhp to 500bhp letting the car go from a super fast luxury cruiser to a snarling, Ferrari eating monster. Makes the sport chrono in the 997 appear to be a bit dull

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

ISUK , Strange that because I spoke to my local dealership ( Scotthall ) about 1 hour ago and he stated they would hold the price on ordering to which yes I was surprised . One dealer said 2yr wait and the other stated 18 months which again I was surprised and on the residual front your right the M5 has never been to clever due to demand and image. As for the M3 this is going to be a cracker in performance and thank god in looks , as usual..

the 65's a huge improvement over my old 55, it's SO much more quicker!!! also very dangerous at the same time as bends approach much quicker than one would think luckily the brakes are amazing too! they are at least 2x better than my 55's brakes were.

the only other car that i have that will keep up with the SL65(well until about 160kph) is my noble. the noble is faster from 0-100, but the 65 catches up quite quick once it gets traction. from 150-160kph onwards the 65 will own the noble.

Re: I was driving my C2S Cab today and ....

The M5 certainly has good performance figures, but just look at it! I have the E46 M3 and I think that's the last decent looking car BMW made. All these Chris Bangle jobs are just hideous. What are those stupid lights all about on the 5's, and the supposedly svelt Z4 is an eyesore too. And don't even start me on the rear end of a 6 series! BMW invited me to a "Meet the new 6 evening", I just looked at it and laughed. Sorry to stir the pot but compared to a 997s, an F430 or even a 350Z the M5 is just a pig!

Lol br d thats why I got to laugh , imagine your in that F430 and you see the pig come right up your rear , firstly your going laugh and think see you later your only an overweight beamer because this has always been the M5's image but this was not the case in the Autocar test.

But I agree with you on the look and the rear of the 6 there just running out of ideas due to too many changes too frequently..

Agree. I found myself next to a brandnew M5 at a traffic light today and the design is just hideous. No denying though that the beast reeks of power. Luckily it was during London rush hour so I had a good excuse not even to try. He would have had me for an amuse geule in my meager 280 HP city hopper.

Absolutely guys, I'm not denegrating the engineering of BM in anyway, I just think they look sh!t!

Anyway, went and paid for the 997s today, everythings in place, it's bought, insured and ready, but my arm is still pretty useless. Not sure I'll be well enough to drive by sept 1st, the physio is like being thrown around by Hulk Hogan for a couple of hours a day. Still, where theres life there's hope!!
