    TPMS--Very Neat Feature

Sorry if this has already been posted. One very neat feature that might not have been mentioned is the measurement *takes* temperature into account and actually gives a reading of exactly how much underinflated or overinflated you are for each tire, at the particular temperature of the tire at the time of meassurement. (I'll read the manual again just to make sure. Someone corrects me if I am wrong.)
What's more, it measures it continuously (updating every few seconds) so you could pump air in and watch as the reading goes from, say, minus 2 (underinflated), to zero (perfect).

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

Definitely a good feature. I have it too. Now the *technical* manual sez it is supposed to tell us tire air temp and condition of little battery, but I can't seem to access that. Any luck with yours?

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

    MMD,
Which manual? Seriously there are a bunch of them, I haven't gotten past the big one yet.
BTW, have been following (and enjoying reading) your multiple posts.

    I'm sorry didn;t mention it's "Service Information 2005 Technik Introduction 911 Carrrera/911Carrera S"

    PN PNA 489 421 05

Worth getting, lots of details you should know if you're a low-to-moderately affected (infected?) gear head.

    us $20-30 (?)

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

So that reading of -2 in the rear and -1 in the front is based on what, I am curiosu to know? Is it based on the factory recomendation, (Typically 29 front, 36 rear I think) or is it based on pressures you input as your correct pressures?

The reason I ask, is I see this as a hugely usefull tool for those of us who track our cars. Track pressures are often different from those used for the street.

Also, air temp inside the tire could as well be very usefull, please keep us posted on your findings about that too MMD.

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

    Hello,
I am not sure what it is based on. I do know that I had to input the tire size, plus the type (winter vs. summer). The system then "learns the wheel" (direct quote from manual) and it does this only when you are driving around (takes around 10 minutes or so).
From the door label, tire recommendation is 37 front, 44 rear. Right now with my car parked, the TPMS reading is 36 front, 43 rear, and the indicator is 0 all around. Using my Accu-Gage, the front tire reading is 37 front, so there is some inaccuracy there. (Of course the question is, which one is more accurate.)

TPMS *does* monitor tire temperature, fwiw. It appears therefore that it does take tire temp into consideration when it gives the add or subtract air recommendation.

Hope this helps. Next time I drive, I'll see what happens to all these numbers I just cited.

If the pressure is off is their an audible signal? My dealer had warned against getting this option as they said that there were many problems on the Cayenne with TPMS. Apparently it would set off an alarm if the pressure was only slightly off. The dealer said that they ended up disconnecting the TPMS on many cars. Does anyone know if this is different than the version on the Cayenne? Thanks,

Man, I sure don't want to hear that! I just ordered a 2006 C2S with the TPMS. Hopefully Porsche's continuous improvement has dealt with this little issue.

I have TMP and think it's great. It's usefulness became apparent last week when, with only 200 mi. on the car I noticed TMP was indicating the right rear was lower than it had been. The next day I watched it and it dropped 2 more pounds during the day. The next morning it was 6 pounds lower than the left and after driving a short distance the low tire pressure indicator alarm came on (visual in the centre of the dash, you can't miss it). I had problems with my Toureg last year (only once and not a problem since) so I thought it was a system fault. I took it to the dealer and they found a screw in the tire. With the side walls so small, it is difficult to check a low tire visually and I am the type that only checks tire pressure infrequently. I now have a new tire on order (the dealer refused to repair, insisting that repairing these tires is not a good idea, especially if I really use them hard). I have been able to use the system to monitor the bad tires pressure, adding air as indicated by the TPM

I think the system does not actually take the air temperature but instead the tire air pressure increases as the temperature rises. You can actually watch this as you drive, push it hard through some corners and the pressure will rise a bit. I think this is one on the best option values on the list.

When I ordered it for my comming C4S, the dealer also told me the same. But..after reading some posts, I realised these where old problems...the system is improved on the 997.
Carlos from Spain has it since april and he seems to be happy with it.

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

Works flawlessly, no problems whatsoever and spot on accurate

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

I have a September-build and also chose TPMS as an option. It works very well with my BMW and I really like the piece of mind it provides.

I've noticed in some pics that 997s with TPMS don't have the standard, black plastic tire valves and valve caps. Is this correct? I also read that the silver-crested valve sleeve and caps are incompatible with TPMS.

Is this the case or am I imagining things? Does anyone have any insight into this?

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

According the manual, the alarm goes off at -3 and again -6. I have not seen the alarm at work in mine, but per the manual you could turn it off. And someone mentioned (above) it's visual, not sound.

Yes, the silver stems and caps DO indicate the TPMS system is in place. My06 has them with TPMS. I don't know it I would call them "silver crested valve stems and sleeves" though, they're the usual plain looking item; instead of being black plastic/rubber they are silver/grey.

BTW BMW system is very different. No transmitter receivers, it simply measures gradual and slight differences in rotation via the ABS system to find the flat tire. Flat tire's rotation is slower since more rubber is hitting road.

Great! Thanks for the confirmation that I noticed what I thought I noticed! I'll hold off on ordering the silver ones to cover up those out-of-place black stems and caps.

Yes, that's both right. I have TPMS on my 997S and couldn't order the crested valve caps I have on my 993 (the plastic ones with silver/aluminium finish and long sleeve). The TPMS valve stems and caps are silver/grey. Unfortunately, the crested valve caps won't fit. The diameter of the TPMS valve stems is greater than the diameter of the crested cap's sleeve. But I have seen some pics on this forum of other crested, real metal valve caps that were without sleeve. That might fit, but are not the caps currently available via Tequipment.

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

Thanks ewi and MMD. That's consistent with what I had heard before. It's good to be able to confirm it for certain, especially for anyone wanting to use the popular Tequipment crested caps and sleeves.

I'm not sure which system is better (as MMD described the diff between BMW and Porsche's technologies) but I'm looking forward to having this system available on the 997.

    Thanks!

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

Any chance this can be added as an option to an existing car? I took delivery back in May.

    How much?

    Re: TPMS--Very Neat Feature

Just purchased a set of TMP wheel sensors for my extra set of wheels. $69 and very easy to install. Looks like they screw into the back of the value stem hole.
