Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

I just noticed something strange. The car has 600 miles on it and the driver's side quad tip has more soot than the passenger's side. Here's a photo. In real life it's much more evident. I can absolutely guarantee nobody touched either exhaust over the past 592 miles. Any ideas? Is this normal? Should this be cause for concern?

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

i have 16k mls on it and it has always been like that. not sure if that makes you feel better though...

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

I wonder if the passenger side exhaust looks more sooty in the southern hemisphere. Let's see some pics from our South African rennteamers' cars.

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

    polish those babies!

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

mabye because only one of them is real j/k

reminds me of the Dinan Exhaust made for E46 M3s, only one side is functional, and hence, in the wintertime, looks very bad. (steam coming only out of one side)

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

You better start cleaning the other side

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

blowing any smoke when it starts or does it just burn when you stomp on it?

exhaust pipes are the same length, headers are the same length, hmmm wear and tear on each side engine the same??

that doesn't look like a lot of soot but if it bothers you then tell the dealer.

when you complain to the dealer say that the car squeaks over bumps..and oh by the way can you check the valves. seems i have more soot on one side.

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

O.T.: OK, MMD, we've seen thrilling shots of your exhaust and the inside of your trunk - when are we going to see the rest of your baby? Pictures please!

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

MMD, I think the answer is really rearlly easy!!!.....
    .......
    ......
    ....
    ..

just retrofit the pse, and you will never regret it!!!

workin' on it (them). Hopefully done before one side of my engine blows from soot-imbalance causes.

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

675 miles on my '06 997 S cab., both sides of exhaust are equally dirty.

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

Mine did the same thing when new and after PSE install but evened out as the miles mounted. I would be interested if anyone else besides ossi noticed it. Is this common for the 3.8 engine? Same thing with my 2002 M3. Could be that one bank of the engine burns the fuel a bit richer (left side of my car's exhaust is a tad darker but its only visable when the pipes were new and even out later). Any one else notice (please post). By the way with 7500 miles I have had only 1 problem....the system fault message after waxing my car near the headlights. Porsche has the fix now (replace module) but will only do it if it happens again. Well I've been polishing the heck out of my headlight and can't repoduce it. It will come on with my luck when the car is 49 months old! A new module is not cheap $1600.00 plus labor. Anyhow how concerned should we be about the difference of carbon flowing out of each bank? Normal or not?

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

Perhaps we should bring this issue to the 996 boarders? They might have seen this uneven soot deposit problem a long time ago. Do we know it's 3.8 liter problem?

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

I took another look at my exhaust tips tonight (PSE) and the left side is still darker (almost black), the right side is dark gray. The difference isn't obvious unless you make a point to do a comparison. I am hardly burning oil at all so whats going on? Car runs strong and smooth even at idle. Any imput or similiar/not similiar experiences with your car? How about non S cars? MMD, I didn't think much of it until you posted and now I'm thinking that this is not good.

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

    right side photo

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

    Left side

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

Admit the difference is small but left side a bit darker especially in person.

My idea would be to thank fate for providing us with lives so trouble-free that we can still worry about things like this.

Small difference is all we need. To me Porsche "precision" means every cylinder (or both sides) should be functioning exactly the same. Also, I betcha we're not putting out 355 hp.

I'm heading over the the 996 board. Maybe they can help us.

What's funny is mine is reversed from yours. My USA car driver's side is darker than the passengers side.

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

MMD, same here left side (refers to drivers side) looking from rear. Fritz, at 47 I wish I can say my life is trouble free but after 2 back surgeries in 4 years I'm thankfull the severe pain I suffered for years has become bearable. I do understand what you mean, only wish it was true for me. Thank God for adaptaive Sport seats, when I'm in pain I go for a drive and come back feeling better!! I didn't think anything of this until I read this post and am just interested as to why? Sometimes my car feels like its not putting out 355 HP and I attributed it to 91 octane gas here in CA.

    Oh well,

So much for my Coriolis Effect theory. . . .

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

Hey quit joking, this is serious s**t. I mean soot. When it happens to you you're gonna wanna know what's going on. Let's try to get an answer here. Before the thread spirals out of control.

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

    glad to be of assistance

MMD is way too heavy, cos when he sits on the drivers side the car is lower on the left so all the soot gathers on the lower side

on a more serious note, yes i'd also be curious to know why the left side on most cars have more soot than the right side

THAT's potentially a good point, Mike. If "most cars" have this soot imbalance thing. I'd feel alot better if that were true; without knowing why (of course I'm curious).

Oh, I have the problematic-for-some sport seats and have no complaints: therefore MY rearend can't be the cause of the problem.

    Feedback guys??????? Any thoughts???????

Re: Exhaust soot on each side doesn't match, now what?

Is it possible that you are experiencing a malfunction of some sort? Perhaps the sport exhaust is only opening on one side while the valve on the other side is broken.

Just a shot in the dark....
