    UK Owners - help please

Hello. Should be receiving my C2 cab next month, and would like a steer on the following please.

    1. 3M permaplate/bra. I've been reading a lot on the forum about this, but it seems like mainly our american cousins get this. I've contacted a local retailer and they want almost Pounds600 to cover the front apron and side mirrors which is a bit steep for me. Never had this on my boxter/cayenne and both were fine, so are our roads better or am I just a bit blind? I would like to keep the C2 for a long time, so preservation is important, but so is Pounds600!

    2. Insurance. Checked with Porsche Insurance and they quoted me Pounds1900 w/o tracker and Pounds1830 with! Seen that some of you got good deals from Priviledge, but was that on the basis of including your spouse and protecting your NCB? They quoted me (36, N. London, driveway) Pounds1036 which is much better than Porsche, but still not as good as what some of you seem to have got.

    3. Car Cover. Unfortunately, car will be left on driveway, so any recommendations for a good cover?

    4. Tracker & radar detector. Any recommendations as I want a cheap tracker if I can get away with it, but a good radar (etc) to avoid loss of licence issues. Tired of installing Pounds1K trackers in cars only to see them go after a year.

    Many thanks for your help.

Re: UK Owners - help please

Picking mine up in 2 weeks but I can try.
    1) Don't know!
    2) I think your Privilege quote is a good one. i live in Essex, 41 years old, only driver, protected NCB and i paid Pounds1177. I took it, it was the best i could get.
    3)Dont know!
4)My dealer is fiting a tracker monitor for 600 quid ish and the Road Angel for another 350. I had a Snooper Neo R1 (or something like that, the top model anyway) in my M3, professionally fitted, and it was pants. The GPRS Gatso's were picked up, nothing else. No temporary camera's or radars or specs.

Re: UK Owners - help please

Thanks. Only problem with the road angel is that it sits on your dash! Are you already commited (ie paid) for your monitor/road angel. The reason I ask is my mate paid around Pounds700 for both privately to the porsche fitter who came to his house to install. PM me if you want details.

Re: UK Owners - help please

Cheers Eddie but yeah, they are already doing it. I agree it may be annoying on the dash, but I'm pretty sure the reason my Snooper was so useless was that i had it fited in the bumper. I was told by the "professional installer" that this was by far the best place to situate it. I'll see how the angel works out. If it picks everything up then i can live with it in view.

Re: UK Owners - help please

Ins Quote Pounds979 with tracker from First Alternative , I am 39yrs with full no claims ..

I have heard Horizon trackers are good and fitted by Porsche . Price Pounds700 then Pounds110 a year or Pounds300 for life cover ..

    throt..

Re: UK Owners - help please

Thanks Throt - will call them. I fitted a Horizon and paid for life cover on my Cayenne through Porsche, and then my mate did his (on a C4S) a week later privately and saved Pounds300.

Re: UK Owners - help please

    1) - www.armourfend.com are the best, by recommendation of fitters. Had a quote of Pounds540 inc VAT for my 987, inclusive of fitting. For bonnet, wings, front bumper, lower front skirt, and mirrors.
    2) - Try Liverpool Victoria and First Alternative? Got around Pounds700 with LV for my 987S - 34, Dorset, driveway, 6 points, 6 years no claims, no tracker required (though you probably would for a 997).
    4) Origin B2 is reliable and can be installed very discretely. Ask Dreamcar for pics.

Re: UK Owners - help please

    Hi Eddie,

    Some comments below:
    1. I've had my car for over 4 months now and "touch wood" not a single chip on the primary body panels that usually get hit - really wouldn't spoil the look of the car with Bra's, etc - there are plenty of people that can do localised repairs should the worse happen.

    2. Try ATS Insurance - got a quote of Pounds1200 with a Tracker Horizon

    3. Car covers, in my opinion, draw too much unwanted attention. Applying a good coat of wax and using Zymol's car wash solution, has kept my car in showroom type condition - still haven't waxed it since taking delivery and the water still beads from the body work.

    4. Tracker - a lot of people have spoken about the I-Mob device but, like me, you may have to be constrained by your insurance company. I personally find the Snooper S3 Neo quite useful.. it spots the GPS Gatso's very well and I only paid Pounds140 for it

Enjoy the car but check it carefully on delivery. Due some minor problems with my car (e.g. small scratch on glass, some tiny stone chips), I got the chrome exhaust pipes on my car for free.

Re: UK Owners - help please

Thanks for the help guys. Still in 2 minds about a bra, especially as I did not have problems with other cars.

Car cover is an interesting one. Want to avoid drawing attention to the car sitting on my drive all week (as I only use it for the weekends), but equally take Prashan's point about it drawing more attention!

Prashan, will inspect the car thoroughly - thanks!

Re: UK Owners - help please

    1. Contact HR Owens in North Acton - They usually have a few sportscars standing around on their parking lot with armourfend film on to have a look at.
    2. '05 987S, 36 yrs, driveway, incl. spouse, 1 yr NCB (freshly moved to the UK and they don't really acknowledge overseas bonuses ) - app. 1250 GBP with Admiral . With full NCB it would have been app. 950 GBP.
    3. Tracker: Got my car with Tracker Monitor pre-installed but don't think I would have fitted it if not for that.
    4. Don't use any radar warn device currently. My reaction time is so slow it wouldn't help any

Re: UK Owners - help please

Thanks Ente. On the NCB point - I too moved back home after being abroad for 5 years. The only insurer I found that was willing to accept my NCB accrued there was Direct Line.

I have no desire to pay for a tracker but suspect will be compelled to by insurers.

Re: UK Owners - help please

eddie, porsche insurance does not require a tracker, or car to be garaged..

Re: UK Owners - help please

    1. Dont do it! It's Pounds600 and I've had a few stonechips above the line of the Bra. I was going to get it fitted on my new car but have decided against it.

    2. Try www.swiftcover.com They are great and I've just insured a car with them.

    3. Car cover - if it;s windy there is a good chance the car will get damaged - swirl marks from paint. I would avoid as my last car was damaged by a top-end car cover. Different if it's garaged though.

    4. Basic Tracker is as good as it gets. The insurance companies dont seem to care which one. A good thief will get the car in a container and locate the device anyway! Got the basic tracker on my porker and it seems to do the job.

I might be tempted to get just the bumper and front skirt done. Could be fitted into the panel edges quite nicely. Picked up a scuff right on the corner (*), which a bra would probably have taken with no damage.

    * 'Cause I'm stupid, was driving tired (again) and miss-judged the swing round into a tight parking space. JUST clipped the car next to me. Maybe I should take my test again! Also I've noticed that the bumper and front skirt takes most of the small chips, and the plastic seems to ding reasonably easily.

FYI, this is the breakdown of my ArmourFend quote:

    PR/2727/01 Bonnet Pounds70.00
    PR/2727/02 Door Mirrors (Pair) Pounds10.00
    PR/2727/05 Front Bumper Pounds170.00
    PR/2727/08 Lower Skirt Pounds40.00
    PR/2727/10 Wing Ends (Pair) Pounds50.00
Subtotal of above parts (exclusive of VAT at 17.5%) Pounds340.00
    Installation charges Pounds120.00
    Nett Total Pounds460.00
    VAT Pounds80.50
    GRAND TOTAL Pounds540.50

Re: UK Owners - help please

I went for Tracker Monitor on my 997 which was Pounds150 more than the basic Tracker retrieve. The thing that swung it for me was that with the Monitor system, Tracker will contact you if your car is moved without the keys being used to start it. This way they can instantly confirm if your car is being stolen and alert the Police staright away. With the basic Retrieve system the onus is on you to report your car stolen to Tracker before they will then alert the police. This seemed a poor option to me as it could be some time before you notice your car has gone and the thieves could be long gone and have identified and removed the Tracker device.

Re: UK Owners - help please

I wonder what's the bigger loss: The devaluation from being stolen and retrieved (and repaired if needed) or the lower amount of cash you get from your insurance for a replacement purchase if your car cannot be retrieved.

Exactly if it gets pinched I rather not see it again , the baby just would'nt be the same . Its just insurance outfits insist on having the trackers fitted..

    throt..

Re: UK Owners - help please

The cost of your car being stolen and not recovered is massively higher than it being recovered with the help of a tracker device. I had a previous car stolen and until it was recovered (purely by chance as no tracker was fitted) the insurance company made it clear that my premium would rise considerably (despite having no-claims protection). From a hassle factor as well, a tracker is so much simpler.

My insurance is through Egg and is about Pounds1,500 (parked on street - SW London). I think it's pretty good but then again I have no history of claims and a clean licence.

Don't bother with a bra - mine hasn't had any problems in 8 months of driving 8k miles. Just try not to get too close to the car in front!

I haven't got a radar detector as I prefer to use my eyes and common sense. This could change once I get some points - it's bound to happen eventually.

Re: UK Owners - help please

Careful with the insurance - Privilege insisted on a Tracker Horizon on mine (i.e. GPS). They said a Tracker Monitor was inadequate.

Thanks a lot Hamilton. California Car Covers is a great site, and I go to the States quite a bit so will pick one up there.

You're right Stone, but the way I figure it, if I get a tracker, my insurance comes down to around Pounds1100, and from next year will only mean Pounds1100 and no new tracker expense. If i stick with porsche, its Pounds1700 every year.

Thanks Steve. My car will be sitting on my driveway, so would be very interested in what you mean by swirl marks being caused by the car cover. I will only drive the car in the weekend, and unfortunately as I travel a lot, there will often be times that the car will be sitting on the drive for a couple of weeks. I just thought it might be safer covered up from un-welcome eyes.

Still un-decided about the value of a bra!

Thanks very much for going to the trouble of giving me a breakdown. It's not that i'm that fussed about the cost, but more, is it worth it. The Americans are very pro, but that consensus does not seem shared here in Europe, and I wonder if it has something to do with our roads. Before this invites some sort of jingoisitic response, let me say I've always found the roads in the States excellent! Hence my confusion.

Re: UK Owners - help please

Thanks to all of you for the advice. On the insurance recovery point, I can tell you that if you do get you're car stolen, particularly a performance car, and look for full payment, you will always be dealt with as a high risk customer, independent of protected NCB or otherwise. It will take about 5 years to get rid of that claim from your insurance history.
