    987S Sport Shifter

    Hi everyone,

I'm considering placing an order for an 06 987S within the next couple of weeks. These are the colour combo/options I'm considering:

    Arctic silver/ blk/ blk
    windstop
    heated seats
    sports steering wheel
    coloured crests

I'm contemplating the sport shifter also. When I test drove the 987S I thought the 6 speed throws were a little long - wondering if anyone has the sport shifter (or has driven a car with the sport shifter) and their impression of it compared to the standard one. Are the throws just shorter or does the shifting feel different? Is it worth it?

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

    Hi LPB,

I've had my 987S about 3300 miles now, and the throws are a little long. In retrospect I think I should have ordered the sport shifter. However, I haven't tried it, just so you know.

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

Compared to other makes - the throws on the 987 are shorter and obviously as compared to the 986, much shorter. Right now I don't have any complaints with it, but the more I get into situations that require quick shifting, the more I wish I would have ordered it. I believe it could be retrofitted - OEM and also TechArt makes one for the 987.

The heated seats work amazingly well - so hot you can fry an egg on them...the sport steering wheel is phenomenal, much better than the stock Cayenne-esque wheel that ships with the car.

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

I agree with you regarding the sport steering wheel - it is smaller in diameter and nicer to grab on to as it is a little beefier also.

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

I think the short-shifter is a shorter but stiffer shift.

It's shorter but NOT stiffer....to my experience. I love the short one and would never get the normal one!

Will it be harder to shift in the winter as it states in the Porsche web?

...that, I don't know yet! I can tell you in december

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

The throws are incredibly long on the 987S in my opinion, that's the one thing that bugs me. But I'm used to it now, as I am used to apologizing to my passenger whenever I hit her knee with my fist when shifting into fifth gear.

But I'm not sure how the sport shifter would feel. I'm not a big fan of short-shifters in general, as anything that makes it harder to execute a shift is not a good idea, in my opinion.

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

5th gear? How fast are you going? Don't tell me the gas prices are causing you to lop along.

true , it is definetly stiffer...

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

Haha if we close over $75 a barrel by the end of the year, I'll be driving 35 mph in 6th gear...

I think you do it intentionally... and where're you going to hit for the 6th gear?

I think if we saw a picture of exactly what's going to be hit, we'd be on the wrong site wouldn't we fellas

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

LOL you guys are killin' me.

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

The optional sport shifter for both the 987 and 996 is sourced from the US company B&M. I think its retail price is $250.00 USD, naturally Porsche charges 750 for it.

It would be nice if the "sports" car came standard with the a"sport" shifter,"sports" suspension and the "sports" wire accelerator response. It would also be nice if Das factory would say that the "sports car" could be used with "sports tires" for "sports" events on a race track. i.e., a dry sump or an improved wet sump system for the 987/997.

That stuff should be the standard default equipment.

The "non" sports suspensiopn, shifter and throttle should be part of a optional "luxus" package for those who wish to
look fast instead of going fast.

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

I guess it's all about wha tone is used to.. I would never of thaught that people could fined the sports shifter too hard!!! It feels very 'normal' to me. On the other hand, I do not like a shifter where you can't feel what's going on.. not on a sports car , anyway.

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

i had my retrofitted,, it feels great, shorter more precise ...

So I'm assuming that there is a noticeable improvement not only in the travel of the shifter but also the "shift feel/quality" - would you agree - less rubbery feel perhaps?
Did you have that done at your Porsche dealer - did it cost you the same as it would have if you bought it with your car new or did they charge you more?

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

hi sorry for delay but was away on holiday...yup had it retrofitted at porsche dealer... same price
it feals a bit more stiffer but the precision you have while shifting is superb... its more like a joystick
    !

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

Thanks for the response. I've placed my order last week and included the sport shifter!

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

The old B&M was like a rifle bolt.

Tried one in the OPC showrrom on a 987 and it was very stiff.

In the UK they are now asking customers to sign a waiver form, in case you cannot select second gear in cold conditions !

Are you serious? I tried it in the showroom when I ordered my car last week and it was definitely a little stiffer and less rubbery which I liked - apparently it loosens up a little after it's broken in - can anyone confirm this? But a waiver?? That's funny!

In London traffic ain't nobody needin' no more than 1 gear anyway.

Yeah in Manhattan, a half gear would work just fine

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

    Funny but serious

The one int he showroom i couldn't actually engage second gear. Ok so the engine wasn't running, but all the other cars in the showroom were fine.

I actually found the std shift to be good, much shorter than the 986.

    Re: 987S Sport Shifter

The standard 987S shift is so much better than the previous 986. Also the throw is very precise, and has been shortened also. So unless you are going to really notice the slightly faster shifts, its pretty pointless. If i did want it, i would wait till after you get used to the std shift, before deciding to jump to the sport shift.

I am really impressed with the improvement from 986 - 987. Bearing in mind i came from the long throw 2.7.
